Just found out that after a small suspensory tweak - no hole but just a bit sore at the top and the bottom due to shoeing problems then shockwave as he is a competition horse- my insurers have excluded both front legs and any muscle/ tendon/ ligaments and they still want £200 per month!!

We are thinking of not insuring him and just putting the money we save into an emergency pot. Very risky but if a large portion of the horse is not insured don't know if £200 per month is worth it

What! that is terrible, why are they charging £200 a month? normal is about £30/£40 a month?

I would put some money in a pot, don't give your money away!

I've recently had really bad dealings with an insurance company and now I would seriously doubt if I would bother insuring any other horse. Im sure you are much better off putting the money aside every month just for emergencies. 200 a month sounds like a stupidly high premium to be paying to me. Who are you insured with?

I was going to post that I'm needing to change insurers so want recommendations but after reading your post, would love to know who you are insured with???!!!

£200 a month would kill me !!!!!!!

The thing is.....insurance is relative to the value of the horse but an op isn't - your vets don't say oooh competition horse the op will cost you twice as much as Joe Bloggs happy hacker. Put the money away as suggested and if you have not accrued enough to have a nice little pot before the unthinkable happens, then think of the funds you could gather at short notice from a bank loan at £200 per month if it was really necessary!

Ok Equine Insurance Solutions to event up to intermediate with a value of £15 000 and everything except loss of use. If you can NFU seem wonderful (they were more for my horse but depends what you do).

I was insured with SEIB. Its a long story but had to put my horse to sleep on humane grounds and they refused to pay out despite having several vet opinions. They did pay out eventually but it was the most stressful and upsetting experience I have ever been through.

What have you been paying per month prior to this? A £15,000 horse, insured for everything, is going to cost a lot more than an 'average' happy hacker.

I had a similar thing from my insurers with Mazzie... at the vetting the vet wrote that she had a sore on her whithers from a rug rub, and they therefore excluded her ENTIRE back. I had to get a letter from the vet detailing how her back etc was, so perhaps your insurers would accept this from your vet and just exclude the main areas? I paid almost £100/month to insure her with one of the well known insurance companies - £6,000 with full LOU, but that was without insuring her for polo.

£200 a month is a lot of money with no loss of use cover, but to be honest with you i wouldnt be going with Equestrian Direct/Equine Insurance Solutions if they quoted me £2 a month with their recent downfall.

Changing the company name does not deflect from the fact that the company is responsible for thousands of unpaid claims. A friend has been waiting since September to find out if her £3000 vet will be paid!
