Hi

Ok, this may be a really dumb question but can you insure a LOU? Is it like a veteran and they cover public liability and accidents or will they cover vets just not what’s connected to the LOU? The next question being is if the pony/horse is covered under the riders Pony Club insurance (which im told covers anyone riding the animal with consent) would it need insuring separately with an insurance company.

Only reason i ask is we are likely to be loaning a horse which has LOU and the current owners haven't got him insured as just using the Pony Club insurance they have but obviously i need to put something in the loan agreement about insurance. Im not in the Pony Club as too old but his main rider is so would be/has been covered by this while riding him.

Thanks
Jeni

only certain companies will insure lou horses and the ones that do all have different things they will cover. some will only cover if they issued the lou, some just 3rd party, others 3rd party and external injuries, some will include colic. i'm with shearwater and they only exclude what caused the lou claim once they've seen the vet report.

i dont know what the PC insurance covers - you would need to check the details to be sure

Thanks. I'll have to do the phoning bit then (hate phoning peeps) and ask, currently with NFU, who have been fine up till now (having "discussions" re Murph) but by sounds of it they may not cover him. Will investigate the Pony CLub insurance angle but have no idea about it!

as far as im aware, only the company that paid LOU will insure the horse again, other companies wont insure it. Thats what I found out anyway. Dont know how it would work if you didnt know who paid LOU on it.
