I had a great time at the demo at Addington yesterday with Tophorse and Becki2003. Was lovely to see halfstep and TOG aswell
I thought i would try and give a brief insight as to who was there and what was discussed, im sure i will miss out lots of bits and probably get peoples names wrong too though
First up was three young horses - Gareth Hughes and Duvie, Garry Williams and Showmaker (WOW - what a horse!!) and Michel Assouline (i dont know what his horse was called). The 'speakers' were Stephen Clarke and David Hunt (?). They talked about how Young Horse classes were judged, and what the judges look for in the paces. Saying that you dont have to have a flashy horse to do well in Young Horse classes. Stephen also pointed out that all the stigma with regards to people saying that professionals always get better marks than amateurs is true - but thats because they do it for a living so they should get better marks!!!!
Next up was Paul Fielder and Erik T (i cant spell his surname!) with riders Tessa Fielder on her 13yr, and Daniel Timpson on a 9yr old stallion. Paul talket ALOT
They talked about the seat and the importance of it and the way its used . Poor Erik could hardly get a word in edgeways though
Then came John Lasseter - i dont think ive laughed so much for a VERY long time, he was hilarious
He was talking about exercises to help the rider and a bit about the Spanish Riding school. He had a 'panto' horse on the lunge and was getting it to do changes etc the audience was roaring with laughter it really was brilliant and a bit of light entertainment! He showed a few rider exercises like arm circling etc, and touched on ground work for piaffe/passage but it was all very light hearted.
Next up was Jennie L-C with Gemma Green and the GORGEOUS Showtime - i love that horse! Jennie was great and her and Gemma showed the difference between working the horse 'long and low' and what some people do which is give the horse a long rein and think its working long and low when its not
She then showed what they would want froma horse that was up and in front of the bridle in self carriage - having the nose out and the poll the highest point.
After a short break Ferdi and Micheal Eilberg did the next demo. Ferdi was working on Micheals halfpasses and they ended up working on zigzags and some movements from the grand prix test - very impressive as i believe the horses was only 8 or 9?
After that Richard Davidson and his wife Gillian on Hiscox Carranche (sp!) showed more collected work and what you would want to see in canter pirouettes - playing with the shape making it larger and smaller but making sure the canter stays active and together. Ive got to say that the mare Gillian rode was interesting - she didnt look like much but when it came to the piaffe/passage work she was lovely.
Finally Gemma and Showtime and Jennie came back in to show piaffe/passage and the transitions in and out. Then Micheal and Ferdi showed the in-hand piaffe/passsage work - apparently all you have to do is get someone to walk alongside your horse with a stick and it will passage/piaffe, oh and according to Jennie through ina couple of clicking sounds and 'voila' you have passage
If only it were that simple!!!!!
All in all a very good day although VERY cold!!!
