I had a great time at the demo at Addington yesterday with Tophorse and Becki2003. Was lovely to see halfstep and TOG aswell

I thought i would try and give a brief insight as to who was there and what was discussed, im sure i will miss out lots of bits and probably get peoples names wrong too though

First up was three young horses - Gareth Hughes and Duvie, Garry Williams and Showmaker (WOW - what a horse!!) and Michel Assouline (i dont know what his horse was called). The 'speakers' were Stephen Clarke and David Hunt (?). They talked about how Young Horse classes were judged, and what the judges look for in the paces. Saying that you dont have to have a flashy horse to do well in Young Horse classes. Stephen also pointed out that all the stigma with regards to people saying that professionals always get better marks than amateurs is true - but thats because they do it for a living so they should get better marks!!!!

Next up was Paul Fielder and Erik T (i cant spell his surname!) with riders Tessa Fielder on her 13yr, and Daniel Timpson on a 9yr old stallion. Paul talket ALOT

They talked about the seat and the importance of it and the way its used . Poor Erik could hardly get a word in edgeways though

Then came John Lasseter - i dont think ive laughed so much for a VERY long time, he was hilarious

He was talking about exercises to help the rider and a bit about the Spanish Riding school. He had a 'panto' horse on the lunge and was getting it to do changes etc the audience was roaring with laughter it really was brilliant and a bit of light entertainment! He showed a few rider exercises like arm circling etc, and touched on ground work for piaffe/passage but it was all very light hearted.

Next up was Jennie L-C with Gemma Green and the GORGEOUS Showtime - i love that horse! Jennie was great and her and Gemma showed the difference between working the horse 'long and low' and what some people do which is give the horse a long rein and think its working long and low when its not
grin.gif
She then showed what they would want froma horse that was up and in front of the bridle in self carriage - having the nose out and the poll the highest point.

After a short break Ferdi and Micheal Eilberg did the next demo. Ferdi was working on Micheals halfpasses and they ended up working on zigzags and some movements from the grand prix test - very impressive as i believe the horses was only 8 or 9?

After that Richard Davidson and his wife Gillian on Hiscox Carranche (sp!) showed more collected work and what you would want to see in canter pirouettes - playing with the shape making it larger and smaller but making sure the canter stays active and together. Ive got to say that the mare Gillian rode was interesting - she didnt look like much but when it came to the piaffe/passage work she was lovely.

Finally Gemma and Showtime and Jennie came back in to show piaffe/passage and the transitions in and out. Then Micheal and Ferdi showed the in-hand piaffe/passsage work - apparently all you have to do is get someone to walk alongside your horse with a stick and it will passage/piaffe, oh and according to Jennie through ina couple of clicking sounds and 'voila' you have passage

If only it were that simple!!!!!

All in all a very good day although VERY cold!!!

Great report and sounds like a brilliant day!

I've gone to a couple of lecture demos that take you through the levels and they've been really really good but this sounds fab with such a variety of top level people

Yes it was excellent.

Dane was ill, but he was meant to be doing inhand work. Carl Hester and Kyra K were meant to be there aswell, but didnt go for one reason or the other.

yes it was good but a little disapointing to get there and find out that Kyra, Carl and Dane were otherwise engaged, poor Dane becuse he had a stomach bug.
I though in actual fact that Ferdi and his son, who in my opinion has the most fabulous seat showed some of the most lovely work a true happy athelete [ beings as this is the catch phrase of the moment] The difficulty of the work he showed with total ease was amazing.
I love the horse Showtime and Gemma has done well to produce the horse but i really dont like the leaning back, sometimes so far it looked like she was going to touch his back! On such a big powerful horse you can get away with such use of the back but it is NOT the way to get the horse to deliver the transmission of energy from the hind leg when you do not have a horse so strong and able as the ones shown.
The lovely stallion that Gary Williams was on had to be my favourite, he showed the wonderful mix of elasticity and ease with a lovely outlook to his work.
On the whole it was an interesting day i would have liked it to be more 'forum ' based as there really was'nt much point in the question and answer bit . There were some interesting points made between david and Stephen about judging and about a lot of judges 'fault find ' like they are happy to have a reason not to give you marks where as a trainer understands the difference between a momentary 'blip' and a training error. This is where i actually find Jenny really brilliant.
These days are worth while going to even if its just to have a good laugh with John Lassiter.

OMG, John Lassetter and his panto horse were HILARIOUS! I was crying with laughter, especially when he did "in hand" work with it......sheer genius, and actually very educational as well!

Very interesting to see how Ferdi used the in hand whip with Marakov to help him raise his forelegs in the passage.

Showtime - he is a gorgeous horse but looks bloody hard work! Jennie made me giggle yelling at Gemma: "Sit on your bum Girl!!!" LOL.

Lovely to see Tempi again, and to meet Tophorse and Becki! *Waves*!!!!

Agree, Garry's horse was definately my favourite of the day he has so much power and suppleness, i couldnt stop watching him!

Gemma does lean back a lot dosent she, but she gets so much out of that horse as hes definately not an easy ride.

What made me laugh is that Anne (who runs my yard, Jennie's daughter) is identical to Jennie! Ive got my first lesson with her next week which is going to be interesting as ive heard her shouting at the people she teaches in a similar way to Jennie! Its going to be discipline all the way for me and the monster

Oh, I had Hannah doing piaffe this morning now knowing the 'secret' trick opf clicking next to her... and all this time I thought it was more complicated than that

Jennie had me in stitches when she kept shouting at Gemma and calling her 'you stupid girl!"

It was a great day, I feel like a sponge at the moment, and I have to say the discussions on the seat were very very interesting. This morning, just walking Grace around (how exciting that I can actually say that after everything
laugh.gif
) I kept my legs around her as she can be explosive when the leg touches her side, and god it worked so well. I kept the leg so it was just touching her side and although at first she was a bit stressy about it, she settled really quickly, much more so than normal
laugh.gif

I have to say, Michael had a really lovely seat and what a lovely combination he and his horse make. It just looked so effortless to them which in my opinion is exactly what should be aimed for
smile.gif

Sounds like you had a great time and educational whilst being funny too!!! I like that!!

On a serious note, I have been told that trainers and judges should work more together so that they can both appreciate where each other is going.... I do think that at some point in your training you do go through times where your marks are not as good as they were because you are progressing up to another level and it may well be that you do not want to jeopardize his training by being say for instance "more uphill" in his test only, as it may confuse him and also may not be quite developed enough muscle wise, but in all other circumstances quite capable... if that makes sense.!!..so Judges work would surely be enhanced if they did work with trainers and saw their point of view....dont you think?
