Hi all, posted a few times previously but thought now I've got my lap top back with all my pics on I should properly introduce the old girl :o

This is Bonnie, our 15yr old black Labrador she lives with my parents in the Channel Islands but she's always been sort of my dog since getting her as a wee pup when I was 14yrs old :o

She was my best friend as a teenager, we did loads of Junior Handlers stuff, agility being her favourite, though she much preferred to jump the mini dog height, obedience depended on how stubborn she was feeling on the day and showing was always endured never enjoyed

We had a litter of puppies from her, and although having a list of names wanting pups she only had two, one of which we kept and the other went to a local lady, who we still see from time to time. Sadly she has out lived the daughter we kept, Tilly, who passed away after kidney faliure in Dec 2010 aged 10yrs old.

The old girl now lives a happy life at home in Jersey, still enjoys her food and going for regular sniffs down the beach despite being very stiff and only with one remaining eye, oh and attempting to gain the record for the worlds most grey hairs :D

She is on quite a lot of medication (mainly metacam) for her arthritis (too much agility :o ) but if anyone can recommend more natural products they have had good results with I'd love to know. I know she can't be around forever but anything we can do to make life easier for her in her later years is always a good thing :)

She's lovely looking - looks a bit like she's been playing in paint with all that grey :D

Glucosamine might be a good supplement to try with her. It will just be a stall but can be effective for joints. The human supplements are cheaper and perfectly safe. I'd feed her 3 capsules a day (I've got a lab too and the guide for glucosamine is 2-10kg feed 1, 10-25kg feed 2, 25kg+ feed 3).

I'm sure someone else will be along soon with other options for you.

my old westie who was 15 was on silver lining joint supplement and it was amazing. She went from not wanting to do anything to being 10 years younger

Green lipped mussel extract. Simply Supplements website, 2 for 1, human grade as it's purer than canine.

Mobile Bones by Pooch and Mutt. Glucosamine and MSM are included.

Glucosamine won't work without chondroitin so choose a supplement with both.

Remember calcium needs phosphorus to be activated, so if you're adding calcium, add phosphorus too. Just get human supplements. Whole raw eggs are good for calcium if she'll eat it shell on, breaking one over her normal food.

Add oily fish to her diet (not in tomato sauce as this exacerbates arthritis). Salmn oil (Hyperdrug, Vetmedic) is an easy way to add oily fish.

Thanks guys :)

Some really useful suggestions, I think I've persuaded mum to try her on green lipped muscle and devils claw before but will suggest some of those to her. She's been on metacam for quite some time ( since about 10yrs) so I do worry about what its doing to her kidney/liver function.

She can be a rather fussy eater (strangely for a lab!) how have people found there dogs take to the silver lining herbs products?

I'm going to be looking after her for 2 weeks at easter so will try and take things over as they can be hard to get hold of in Jersey.
