I have just bought a gorgeous full Irish Draught, rising 4 yo gelding. I am a complete virgin where passports are concerned and was wondering if any of you good people would guide me in the right direction of where / what I should do.

He has come with a full green Irish passport. The front of the passport says “Irish Horse Register Passport”. On the page which lists breeding, parentage tested, breed, chip number etc it says at the top of the page “Irish Sports Horse Studbook”. So my questions are:

1) What website do I need to go to so that I can update my details as his new owner. (I have tried googling this but it brings up a few different sites so I am unsure of which one he is registered with).

2) I also need to name him. The front of the passport has a sticker saying that foals can be named at 2 years of age by submitting 4 names….can I still give him a registered name at 4 years of age or have I missed the boat, and if I can is there a way of checking my shortlist of 4 possible names prior to sending them in to see if they are already in use?

3) As he is full Irish Draught I would have thought that he would be passported with an Irish Draught passport agency. As he needs time to mature I am not looking to do too much with him initially but I want him to get to see a bit of life so thought I might try some showing with him, do I need to do something with his passport in order to do some showing classes?

4) And finally how long does it take to get the passport back (presuming that you actually have to send it off in the first place! I am guessing you do!) He had his first lot of annual jabs after his vetting so I don’t really want to send off his passport for it not to be returned in time for his next set of jabs to be updated.

If anyone can shed some light on this I would be eternally grateful as I am going bog eyed with googling different phrases and not finding the answers I need.

I think is the HSI website. Best to call them to make sure you get it right.

Dunno for sure, but if he doesnt have a name yet im sure you can name him, as for database its normally members only (like the GB Irish Draught website) that can log in, but im sure you can ring their office and check names.

There will be a reason why he has gone down ISH rather than ID, maybe he failed the grading as a 3yo or his owners/breeders elected to have him reg as ISH as he didnt meet the standard for RID.

As for passport return if you ask their office they can let you know a rough idea im sure.

Good luck!

And there was me thinking that just because all his parentage is RID I just presumed that he would be able to be registered as ID - didnt realise that they had to be graded in order to get an ID passport. All this is making me feel really old!!! How times have changed!!

Wait now, wait now! Hold your horses and wait now!!!!!!!!!

Before you go making any brash statements, let me tell you the truth of the matter.

The HSI operate the Irish Horse Register. Within the IHR are all the other studbooks in Ireland. ISH, Connemara, RID etc. The passport for ISH and RID are one and the same. So don't worry about his "grading". Never happens. Geldings don't get graded here, it's a waste of time. If it walks and talks like a duck, it's a duck!

You can name horses anytime after they hit two years of age!

Send your passport back to the HSI office with your list of names, fee and address and you should have it back in about 6 weeks depending on how busy they are registering foals etc.

Here is the link to change the registered owner for an Irish Horse. The FAQ's section which this links to will answer all your questions regarding name change etc. They are very quick at getting the passport back to you. I can't remember exactly but maximum 2 weeks.

A green passport just means that his full breeding on both sides is traceable. It doesn't mean that he is not full ID. If you look on the studbook page RID under the name means Registered Irish Draught. ISH is Irish Sport Horse which is an RID x TB. At least this is my interpretation of it!!

Eothain - That makes more sense re the ID register being part of IHR. All his breeding is recorded and his passport shows all his parentage going back a number of generations being RID, so thought it was a bit strange that he wasnt in some way associated with the ID register.

Just need to think of some names now!

Thanks all. x

They are pretty good at getting them back quickly. When I registered foal last year stuff went on a tue and passport was back the following Mon!

Not anymore....any foal by an approved stallion foaled in Ireland by a mare with recorded breeding can obtain an ISH book. The ISH age classes have plenty of horses in them by foreign stallions approved in Ireland, out of foreign mares resident in Ireland and they are classed as Irish!

I need to change ownership of my ISH with 1/8 RID can I send it anywhere in England? Or where do I get my euro money from or can I send pounds? Thanks I am thick!

Eothain/Conor's statement is not correct. There are a significant number of studbooks within Ireland that are neither owned nor controlled by HSI. One notable exception is the Warmblood Studbook of Ireland (www.irish-warmblood.com).
