Irresponsible Owners

Unmuzzled cane corso attacked a Labrador this week in our nearest useful park. Fair enough, it ran over to the cc, but there were metal railings between them! It wouldn’t let go. The owner of the cc, to his credit and as he should (?) took the lab and his owner to the vet. I don’t know quite what to think, the lab owner should have recalled his dog, which he said himself, but he said he thought it was safe inside the railings. En route to this park earlier in the week, my OH encountered 2 xl bullies who came out of their house, on lead thank god, straining to get to our two. 🙁

That's a difficult one. The owner seems decent though (didn't flee the scene or act like an a-hole). So did the Lab make it through/over the railings to the CC? The Lab wasn't recalled at all? I mean if my dog is locked onto another, even with something separating them, I'm calling them off. Dogs can get over and through things. I can understand the Lab owner thinking that the dog would be safe inside the railings, I guess.

It's hard because if you're walking your dog on a leash and the dog hasn't attacked before, and then an off lead dog runs over to your dog on the leash and yours attacks, then I feel as though you (person either dog on a leash) aren't 100% at fault there.

The incident might've been a bit more likely because the CC is a loyal guardian, and if the CC felt they his/her owner was nervous and a dog was coming at them, the CC has an inclination to protect. I cannot emphasize enough how much training and socialization this breed typically needs.

On the other hand, by Lab took great offense to another dog coming up to her once. She generally gives zero f*cks, but there was something about that one dog. So even a dog that I'd think would never do something or was trained well enough, could still do something because animal with own brain. Probabilities are higher with certain breeds, no doubt.

Lab owner is not neurotypical, imo. Met him today in the supermarket and had problems getting away from him. He’s lovely but definitely not NT. The railings are 5ft high, I have no idea why he didn’t recall his dog, that would have been my immediate response.
 
No one should let their dog run up to another dog even if there is a wall between them. I’m so grateful we live in a very rural area where as long as I shout ‘Fly, go and lie down’ before I walk past next doors farm yard entrance I never see another dog except for on mules or quads.
Equally if I do see another dog mine do not approach it. And I kick it if it approaches mine in any way other than nicely. But I think there is a sub clause where all breeds on the public paths or highway must be collies (other herders accepted) or Gundogs.

I had chickens killed when we had a footpath running through the farm yard. One man told me I shouldn’t let my hens go there so his dogs weren’t at fault. He did give me £20 a hen when I went insane fishwife on him.
 
Following a car along a busy A road this morning, there was an unsecured dog in it jumping around the interior and hanging it's head out of the window at times, narrowly missed by an oncoming bus on a sharp bend, it then leapt into the front passenger seat causing the driver to swerve slightly - I have sent my footage from my trusty dash cam to the police anti social driving reporting page....what a plum of a driver.
 
I was walking along with my 3 on lead as I was in the park and there were quite a few children around , mine are good with kids but I won’t risk it, there was a couple sitting on a bench and their 2 dogs were loose , they both had their noses up my dogs rear end and he obviously wanted to turn around, I let him say hello and walked on with these dogs following ,noses still in the same place, owners did nothing until I went after them and shouted and stamped my foot, they then called them.. surely they could see they were bothering mine , so ignorant. They were smallish dogs but still irritating…

Yes, on the verge bordering the park behind the railings. Lab is extremely submissive, he was rolling around trying to entice my two to play when we met up.

Totally agree unless you know the dog and even then, I’m wary. I’ve recently met a giant ‘schnoodle’ which I know is fine off lead but not on. I kept well away from him yesterday, another one was present and I’ve been told they play together very hard and there’s no way my two are going near that. They are far more interested in sniffs than other dogs, so won’t race up to others.

I can’t wait to move rurally, pray God there are no xl bullies where we go. Far too many round here in chavsville.

Somebody in a pickup pulled out in front of us on a lane the other day, slowed us right down, presumably for the sake of allowing the dog to stick it’s whole front end out of the window. 😱 Ours can put paws on the back seat but they can’t actually get their heads out of the window.
 
Leash aggression is also a thing.

There have been 2 Pitbulls on the loose for a few days now. With the bitter cold we've had (down to -22°C) they're likely dead if someone hasn't gotten them. I had a sort of moral dilemma because I felt bad for the owners but they own three Pitbulls, and all with cropped ears. I doubt they were rescues adopted that way. That and their dogs ran away and have been missing for days... I'm kind of hoping they don't get anymore.

Speaking of cropped ears... The Westminster dog show annoys me, to put it lightly. Granted, I'm not into dog showing anyway, but the breed standard being cropped and docked for the Cane Corso is f*cking stupid. I'd love to see no cropped and dogs allowed to show when it comes to any breed. Well, I can make a few exceptions for docked tails, but ugh!

Indeed, I think the owner of the lab has realised this now, although he ought to know better, it’s by far from his first dog over the past 20 odd years we’ve known him. I think he assumed it was safe given the railings 🤦🏼‍♀️

They just don't get that most PROW cross private property and people's and animals' homes, the amount of people that seem to think my animals have escaped makes me laugh, never heard of free range!

Monster would like to nominate me as an irresponsible owner today. I let the dogs out into the garden at lunch time as usual but popped into the tack room / garden shed to grab some gardening gloves to chop back the rose bush while my lunch was warming up.
Anyway, I chopped back the rose bush and had lunch and then realised I hadn't seen Monster for a while and Liberty was glued to the chicken pen instead of playing with him. I check the garden, no Monster, go back in the house and check all the rooms, still no Monster. Starting to panic at this point and wondering where on Earth he could be. Notice the key in the garden shed door, open it, and there is a very excited Monster. He hadn't even barked, even though I was calling him.
Luckily, Monster can't write or I might be advertised in the free ads this evening.

So, the opposite to one of our cats, whose outraged yells could be heard from the shed I'd locked her in as soon as I opened the back door to look for her. She *wasn't* excited when I opened the door. There was a distinct froideur until the next meal time!

Probably bedlington/collie/saluki then either grey or whippet depending on size, in varying amounts, lower amount of saluki at a very rough guess. I'd imagine a very nice trainable dog.

I think a lot of people have lurchers and don't know the mix. People who are big on working lurchers do it very carefully with lots of thought but pet lurchers tends to be as they are nice dogs. Or people buy them and then immediately forget its 1/8 x, 1/8 y, 1/4 a.b.c etc
