I know this probably sounds silly but I am really looking forward to Winter.

I'm excited about getting my horse home (he's been on a yard 20 miles away for over a year!), getting him fit and hopefully competing him (local level) for the first ever time.

I'm looking forward to bringing him in at night and knowing he is nice and cosy in his rugs with plenty of hay to munch and a nice warm feed to enjoy.

I can't wait to be able to go out and give him cuddles and carrots in my PJ's every night before I go to bed.

I can't wait to be able to get up in the morning and look out of my bedroom window at his gorgeous face peeking out over his stable door :)

He has been gone for too long and I can't wait to get him home :D :D

I'm sure once winter really sets in and I am knee deep in mud and horse poo I will be wishing that winter didn't exist so if you could point me in the direction of this thread when that time comes please do :D :p :D

What are you looking forward to Winter for?

Yes me! Thought I would be the only one. No flys, log fires, cosy nights, frosty morning rides. Yup bring it on!

3B now I know you were up to the wee small hours but are you still drunk wanting winter to arrive?! :D

No I can perfectly understand why you're looking forward to it when you'll have your boy so close at home like that. What I dream of! Just to wander down the garden and have pony in a paddock at the end - or be able to nip into stable late for a check. Will be lovely for you and him :)

I'm just hoping it's not such a severe winter as last year. Or that our horses end up being stuck in their stables for 12 days on the trot with no proper turnout as last year...all I can remember is walking round and round the stable block with him to try and ensure he got the circulation going and a leg stretch...nightmare!

Errr NO! 40 years of horse owning and winters makes me think " why?" each year lol

Dream on you rookies and I will be watching this space for moans about mud and mud fever, the wind and rain, snow and lack of turnout and so on. But on the other hand if we have a lovely dry winter, with a few frosts and crisp sunny days.....................

( I swear I just saw a flying pig lol)

LOL MD I am stone cold sober, promise :D :p :D

TicTac - I am sure I will hate it once it really hits but I guess at the moment I have a lot to look forward to :D

I love the sunny but cold days, crisp clean air and knowing my horse is as snug as a bug in a rug...Not too keen on the tap freezing, slippy ice and muddy gateways. Not liking the fact it always feels like its dark outside, the wind and rain.
But....no flies, sunburnt noses and i have an excuse (as if i need one) to go and buy rugs!!!

I'm also hoping that this winter isn't as long or hard as the one just past...We had snow from the beginning of December and temperature dropping to -23 and didn't really end until April!!!

3B you're not alone... I often get to this time of year and look forward to the winter. I'm mush better at riding regularly in the winter as there's more of a set routine. I'm lucky where I am in that we have indoor barn stables and the fields don't get that muddy....

I'm also getting my new horse vetted Friday. I've had 18 months from hell with rubbish luck with horses (my horse of lifetime PTS last summer, horrendous fall, then deciding to sell current horse, injured herself, then once up for sale and had interest, went lame only to then be all but written off and sold for £1 (to excellent home... but still!)). So I'm looking forward to a getting back into it all and enjoying myself!

me to :D:D

i love putting his rugs on, nice winter rides, bringing him in, knowing he is all tucked up and cosy :) making hot sugar beet :p watching him play in the snow....

but i hate, getting up early, muddy fields, the expence of feed/bedding, pouring rain, icey roads etc !!!

its worth it tho ;):D

No way! Can't ride in the evenings when I get back as get back at around 8:30pm and have no school or lights. I am ALWAYS cold even in summer so the winter just makes me depressed..
:(
Like putting him in nice and warm with a nice haynet though :)

Erh!!!! NO.... cold, wet, windy lots and lots of mud dark nights......
loads of money spent on hay and stable bedding, dirty rugs so on and so on
Brrrrrr just thinking of winter puts me right off :)

Yes! I love winter! It's my favourite, just love getting all wrapped up and sitting in front of the fire and making sure Red is all snugly in his rugs, love it! Suppose it's ok for me cos I only have to muck out at weekends, can't wait to put his rugs on and get him clipped out :D

HUNTING :D:D And i've been waiting forever to use my new fleece exercise rug :D And not being plagued by flies  However once I get into winter I am there wishing it was summer :p

I must be weird lol i love it!!!!!

Love it when hes so happy to see me int eh mornigns when i turn him out.

Adore it when he trots down to be brought in.
Love coming home in te cold and wet knowing hes all tucked up with his big comfy bed, haynets, salt lick and jimjams (lol yes i know :D) xxx

yes I am too.
ive got one crop of haylage in, another currently being cut for me, then another crop off my field so i shall have plenty not to worry about running out.
ive got a decent sized har standing for my horses so no mud to worry about plus my arena is in so this will be the first winter in a long time that i will be able to ride my horses on an evening after work (or early morning if i choose) Then on top of that HUNTING as my horses will be fit to go :)

Yes, me too. I hate the heat, he hates the heat, I hate the flies, he hates the flies. I like having him clipped and rugged up so he's always shiny and lovely. I like jumping indoors so you don't need to worry about the weather - even with this very hot summer we've had, it's been so windy sometimes (Weston Lawns - the windiest place on earth I think) that the jumps blow down, even with sandbags. And I like having to plan my working hours to 3 short days to ride and 2 long days to make the time back. (Actually, I hate the 2 long days to make the time back but hey ho).

But. I do not like the snow or the icy roads so you can't ride. Or the tap freezing. But generally - yes, bring on the winter.

No flies, blue sky, sunshine, no rain (usually) making huge piles with the plow, having to plow the drive before my daughter can get up the laneway to the road for the schoolbus. I LOVE seeing this (when it finally gets light anyway;)) I still ride on my own land too and should have the indoor up and running before Christmas this year.

I really don't look forwards to the few weeks in Spring in the thaw when the whole place is soggy, brown and depressing, it reminds me horribly of a UK winter:mad:

I'm quite looking forward too it tbh! Neat shiney clipped horse - can pull his mane extra short and will probably take a few extra inches off his tail which I wouldn't normally (I like it long... but for the sake of neatness!!), hot clothing every day for even MORE shineyness....
Getting the outdoor arena to myself because everyone else is too much of a wimp to ride in the rain (and near freezing temperatures...? :p) is also a bonus!
Also stabled horses - no worry about trudging down the field most days as Dante is such a wimp he barely goes out in winter! :D

nothing beats a ride on a cold frosty morning with sun coming through and a cosey fleese and when you breath frosty air comes out lol, but hate having to spend 1/2 a hour un freezing tap outside and mud ect.

Yes, this year - I am! Because the horses are going to be living at home with me (yay!) and the soil is sandy and never gets muddy (double yay!). I am stoked :)

Definitely NOOOOOoooooo!!! - the mud, the rain, gales, ice, snow, haily icy stuff that blows in from the side, starting off with a barrow full of straw at one end of the yard and having 3 stalks left by the time you get 20 feet and the yard looking like it's been hit repeatedly by a straw lorry - Noooo!!!

I am hoping autumn will give winter a miss and skip straight on into spring!!!:D

Yep i am i love winter. Mainly if it snows though. We had snow for 13weeks no mud it was great!!

Hopefully some winter pics to get you in the mood!!!

I love that photo, I half expect some Dickensian character complete with horse and carriage to appear, quite lovely.

Gleek - lovely pic :)

I am looking forward to winter as now have them all at home. Stables are now finished in the barn and the straw arrived yesterday. No arena now but looking forward to the routine. I might lose some weight with the mucking out ! :0 I get lazy in summer lol :)

Autumn - yes, proper mid-winter, no!

I agree. I love a good fresh morning to blow away the cob webs and the sun shining bright.....ahhhh

However, although I hate going down to the stables mid winter, I do love Christmas and all of the festivities. In the village where I live the shops and lamposts all have christmas lights and as the evening draws to darkness and I look out of my flat window, I really get that warm tingly Christmas feeling...............role on Mulled wine season!!! :D
