My pony is currently as fat as a tank, he goes out during the day with a 250gm fill rug as he is clipped, he gets two med size haynets when he comes in at night and minimum feed morning and night and i try and ride him every day till he breaks into a sweat yet he still isnt dropping the pounds!

anyone else having the same problem or is it just my greeding little monster?

My section A is turned out 24/7, hasn't been rugged all winter, only natural shelter in the field and a small hay net only when there is snow on the ground.......she is still massive!!

I have an unclipped, unrugged welsh cob.
doesn't get any feeds whatsoever, only hay.
she gets one haynet in the morning and one at night.
Just come back into work after unexplained 'not moving forward' ness after a miraculous recovery as she was about to go to hospital so playing it by ear now.
she is overweight and not alot i can do about it!

My highland mare is huge at moment. She is unclipped, no rugs, out 24x7. Has to have feed but then thats only hifi apple handful to have meds in. She has had the winter off work and only coming back into very light work so hard to keep weight off.

Two nets seems excessive if he is porky! I would give him one net with small holes to make him work for it. Are you feeding a mix or a balancer? Mix can make them keep weight on. Plently of good balancers on the market to ensure he gets all the vits etc he needs. I also have a fat coblet and he is 16hh and only on above!

My fell is on strict hay rations of 1.5% BW, in LW rugs due to a clip and is like a tank! He's just had 5 weeks off because of the snow and ice so we're building up fitness at present. I swear he could actually live on fresh air!

Why don't you try him in a 220gm in the day and see if that makes a difference. Of those out 24/7, most of ours are either wearing 180gm or no fills and they've held their weight well.

If you are worrying about your pony's weight now then bare in mind the risk of laminitis come spring.

I have an obese warmblood on a balancer only, in work and only moved onto haylage a month or so ago as thats what the yard does! He is always a lot fatter in winter though, never known why just put it down to the haylage :)

Yes my cob is MASSIVE. He's been off work for the last six weeks and has managed to put on 50 kgs since I last weight taped him in September. Not on any hard feed, just balancer and not great grass. Did have hay and was brought in at night in snowy weather. Have now decided to shiver him thin by only putting lightweight rug on. Feel a bit mean but needs must!

My cob is fat, currently has a blanket clip and lived out in the snow in a 100g rug, even when it was minus 15 (she was warm enough). I'm trying to excerise her more and she needs clipping again. She gets one small holed haynet at night and turned out in the day in a sparse field. Breakfast of Alfa-A with Naf Pink Powder.

hes a fell so he should have a bit of weight on but hes got too much at the min, & i give him two nets cos thats all he gets as there is little/no grass in the field. and all hes getting is happy hoof and carrots and a pinch of redi grass. he tends to drop some weight by the time spring cos i can ride every day with the lighter nights and the fields clear up so we go for a blast round them for half an hour.

Yes! My horse is unclipped and rugged up in the day, in at night.
He's fed on hay and chaff and after a long time off work due to bad weather and problems with bucking- he is FAT! Lunged him for the first time today and he was dripping with sweat!

I certainly would not suggest cutting any hay down to one net a day. Starving horses STORES fat. I would soak the hay to within an inch of its life, and feed 2 slices of (small bale) hay per day in small holed haynets or double netted, one in the morning one at night, soaked.
Please dont starve fatties, it does more harm than good.

Ah ha, I sympthise. I have a fell too and he is truely a air-to-fat converter!! My plan for the spring is to work him hard and then work him some more!! :D

I feel soo reassured after reading this thread now! :D

Mine has had time off with the weather. Hard feed was stopped completely and he was just fed haylege morning and night. He is looking rather well and has definitely put on weight! Glad he's back in work now!
