Is horse manure bad for dogs?

My cocker spaniel keeps helping herself to horse manure it’s was months ago since my horses where wormed I’m aware they can get poisoned from chemicals used in horse worming my dog knows the leave it command but it’s no use because all my dogs terriers, cocker spaniels, collies they all roam freely on my property and Im not always near her to inforce the command my field where I keep my horses is just behind my house but my cocker spaniel is the only one who has a taste for horse poo she jumps over the gate or goes under its not all the time I see her eating it just occasionally she brings it back and stashes it in her dog house
 
My dogs dont have access to my own horses' poos, but when walking on the New Forest where there are ponies and poos everywhere they gobble loads! They are usually fine, but occasionally will bring it all back up!
You mentioned wormers ..... that is a whole other matter, and I nearly lost our Collie when she licked the smallest amount of wormer on the ground that I hadent noticed.
 
My dogs have been helping me muck out the stables for years, so I feel confident saying that it's definitely not poisonous!
 
Both of mine and my previous dog stuff their faces with horse poo every day and it never seems to affect them, however when I worm I keep them away from the stables and paddocks for a few days. My horses are stabled at night and I time it so at least some of the most contaminated poo's are dropped in their stables first. Iv'e never had a problem with any of them eating poo but if you really can't call them off you do need to keep them away from it at worming time.

My horses live out all year round I couldn’t get them into stables even if I wanted to only my miniature Shetland pony’s go in stables at night and my horses where wormed months ago I’m glad the actual poop isn’t going to harm her she’ll eat anything and I mean anything she’ll eat any fruit or vegetable raw or cooked she loves toast and she loves tea ☕️ I have never seen a dog like her you’d think she’d atleast be fussy about something nope! If it’s edible she’ll eat it

I Feel your pain Rosie! Both of my Weimaraners have eaten all known food groups! the first one was shocking and had rubbish recall and when I lost him I got another( I love the breed) thinking he 'couldn't possibly be as disgusting as the first, but yep ,he is, eats anything, favourite scooby snack being cat poo ! He does have good recall but i don't bother when it's horse poo. I think the extra fiber is good for him!
 
Ivermectin wormers are very toxic for collies, extremely dangerous. That’s all I know. My vet told me horses should be left in so as not to affect dung beetles. I have no idea if this is true.

ivermectin (and other drugs in the same class) are toxic to dogs with the MDR-1 gene mutation-its common in many herding breeds and some sight hounds (there's a lower prevalence in border collies than in Smooths, Roughs, Aussie Shepherds, Shelties) but can happen in their cross breeds and other breeds. I have a Smooth who is probably MDR-1 affected and he's not allowed to eat horse/cattle/sheep poop. I take a fairly dim view of dogs eating poo so its not a big deal.

A friend almost lost her JR when he licked up a small bit of wormer, he had severe neurological symptoms and was very very ill. They think his sight is still affected

I'd not risk it with any dog tbh, I am really careful handling wormers, getting rid of the packaging and washing hands etc. but then I don't let either of mine snaffle random things either-both have a solid 'leave it' command.
 
As for the dung beetles, when I had horses it was really sad finding all the dead ones when poo picking the paddock, and my horses were always in for 12 hours after working and I poo picked daily.
My dogs eat any sort of fecal matter, except fox and badger, they only roll in that. They also eat human...which makes me gag even remembering the scene.

Oh duck poo is gross. Broody hen poo is a favourite here. I agree about deer unlikely to contain wormer, I was having my happy slightly wandering off topic convo with myself. :-)

If horse has been wormed and the dog eats the horse manure within a month it can become ill...best always to keep dog away from eating it.
 
I’m definitely wary of letting my dogs eat any horse poo except in my own fields as I know when my ponies are wormed. Mine aren’t big sh*t eaters although the pup does seem to enjoy sheep and goose poo 💩🙄

My pup is on the chicken poo. It makes her breath stink! Still, I had a break in yesterday and the Dutch bantams all came in the house, at least she cleaned the floor up for me. :-)

It is one of the known issues with moxidectin (thanks to those people who like to go out and make fake cow pats), you'd have to be keeping your horses in an awful long time.
 
clearing them out was something they waited for the work experience kids to come in for (bristol zoo).
I think they did the burrows 6 monthly, not very often anyway!
 
Luna doesn’t really eat the horses poo any more, did as a pup though, and Bo isn’t off lead when we are there. One thing I’ve never thought much about though, Dolly is on prascend. If they did eat it, could that cause harm? Am always ultra careful and keep the dogs away when I’ve wormed.
