on tuesday my friend bought a nice little TB mare, she was vetted and passed with no problems.
She was turned out in the field yesterday then lunged in a pessoa for about 10 mins. She was then put away in her stable for the night. This morning her front left leg is huge and swollen and although I haven't seen it I've been told it looks like a tendon injury.
Is it possible she did this in her stable overnight?
Her owner left a feed bucket in there with a handle but I took that out at 6pm. Other than that there's nothing she could have been caught in, she doesn't even have a haynet.
Is it possible she did it while being lunged? Would an injury like that be immediately noticeable?

She has been cold hosed and an ice boot put on then bandaged, and the vet will come out tomorrow.
Just wondering how she could have done it

She could have done it before she got brought in and lunged r while she was being lunged. if her adrenaline and endorphine levels are up she may not show lame. Could also be possible that its not a tendon but a kick injury which materialised later after the horse stood in.

Not really a good idea to bandage a swollen leg. it will allow for no more expansion and it can cuae pressure injuries.

Could have done it in the stable if she had throw her self about a bit!

See what the vet says.

Silly question.. is the horse lame?

thanks, I was thinking the same as you jet set, but as I wasn't there yesterday or today I only know what I've been told by other people.
She is a very quiet little mare and I really couldn't imagine her throwing herself about anywhere!
Apparently she wasn't lame this morning, but was lame this afternoon.
I'm going to the yard all day tomorrow so I'll try and sort her out (the owner that is!) and find out a bit more.

thanks guys xx

Sounds as if she may have become cast in her stable overnight, particular if she is unused to stables or used to a larger stable maybe. I would have thought some anti inflammatories, box rest for a couple of days and supporting bad leg and other leg with stable bandages over well padded gamgee would suffice. If your friend is not experienced with bandaging get someone who is to put them on.

As a precaution I'd tell your friend to chuck the bucket with the handle. So many people use these and I think they are so dangerous, particularly the thick heavy plastic buckets that wouldn't break if a horse got leg stuck between handle and bucket.

I have known a horse break its leg in a stable overnight before, so it could be possible I suppose to injure a tendon.

Because she's only had the horse a few days she's convinced that it was injured before and she's been ripped off, but the horse was vetted and passed so I'm inclined to think she did it in the field or her stable on saturday night.
