Is my farrier expensive?!

I had two ponies feet trimmed today and it cost me £40!!
He was 45 minutes late which I know is fairly normal for a farrier! He had to take 1 set of shoes off the 1st pony and just trim her (leaving her shoes off!) then with the second pony he just had to trim as usual (no shoes to take off!) and cost me £40!!!

no then - I pay £20 for a trim without him having to take old shoes off - bet there are people in the country having to pay more than that.

Cost of owning horses I am afraid!
 
Yes . . . and no. I was paying £20 for a trim 3 years ago so I have now changed my farrier. New one charges £10 for a trim, that's much better (and more realistic). Previous farrier = £75 a new set; new farrier = £50 a new set and does just as good a job, is also very punctual and very obliging re time. It pays to shop around
 
i pay £20 per horse per trim!!! (baby horses) they can be tricky and he is great with them,patient fair but firm) is well worth the money!!

Thats good IMO! Im £26 a trim and £68 a set of shoes. Farrier has only ever been late once and that was 10 mins! if anything he is always early.

Cheapest we ever were was £15 a trim 10 years ago - shoes however have gone from about £36 a set to up to £74 with some farriers. We did have one guy who my sis knew who got drunk and told her he made over 100% profit from a set of shoes and told her the real price so she refused to pay him the full whack

£60 a set; we were lucky to find our farrier as most are involved with the racing yards......I was quotes £120 a set by one farrier who mainly did race horses!
 
I'm £50 for a new set

£40 for the same shoes back on

and £15 for a barefoot trim

Remember that if your farrier does a good job then he's worth every penny..... no foot, no horse

These guys have overheads to take into consideration as well as the cost of the shoes. We're paying for a skill, which is always going to cost more.

After spending time out in Turkey and seeing how they do it I almost worship the ground my farrier walks on!!!
 
I suppose it depends on whereabouts in the country you are located- but I really dont think you were ripped off! £20 each for a trim is an average price!

We pay approx £65 a set and its £20 for a trim.

Although the basic cost for the steel for a set of shoes is peanuts. you are paying for the Farriers expertise and travelling costs!
 
The question should be; how good is he? I would pay good money for a good farrier. Even just a trim can be detrimental to a horses feet. If he is doing a good job at shapeing them then £40 is a fair price for keeping your ponies sound. However, if he doesn't do a good job then yes that is expensive. I pay £75 for a set of shoes and £50 for my other horse that has a pair of fronts with hinds just trimmed but my farrier is superb and wouldn't change even if he charged me £100 for a set. If its raining he cancels and wont shoe if the horse is not free from mud in a dry clean stable but I am happy that he takes care of them.
 
£20 trim and £65 a set and just been told he is going to charge extra for stud holes for now on.I have to book each time for next time as he is so busy.
He is good and reliable so willing to pay
 
Mine are £20 to trim the shetland (because he hates doing them) and £55 a new set So no i dont think you were ripped off its the normal price
 
Mines £16.50 for a trim and he's very good.

Before him though I had never had a farrier charge me more than £15 which I always thought was pretty reasonable.
 
i'm ashamed to say i am not sure what mine cost as I pay my mum monthly for upkeep and she is normally the one who deals with the shoeing as I'm at work! I think it's round about the same prices though and I know sets of shoes have gone up etc but as mentioned you get what you pay for. Our farrier is brilliant, always on time (mainly early) and has been out on numerous occasions to sort out my horse's abscesses, refitting shoe etc (he has poor feet, thin walls) and doesn't charge me for this - I think he feels it's his fault but unfortunately it's a vicious circle - horse is pain to be shod as is sensitive so makes it hard for farrier to get shoes on!
 
I pay £15 for a trim and £40 for a new set, mine has been great with my youngster and especially with one who suffers with lami as soon as i told him we had lami starting he was down to do his feet and came every few days to check him.
 
i pay £25 for the first trim and £15 for the second after that it's £10 a trim my farrier charges strange
 
i had a farrier iv never used out b4 he charged me £46 for a trim and front shoes i think he said £75 for full set... think i might be ringing round tho to check others
 
Thats not bad. Mine is £67 a full set with 6 stud holes. £55 no stud holes (more than one horse) £60 for one horse

But can always guarantee it is him shoeing my horse, and he always lets me know if he is going to be late!!
 
I pay £15 each a trim for the minis, but its the same price whatever the size. I think thats reasonable as he is always on time, he does and excellent job, and trimming the minis is just as hard a job if not harder ( always has to kneel down, must wreck his back!!! )
