is our dog jealous of the new arrival or am i paranoid??

i have had lou-entire saluki cross from 8 weeks-he was a rescue and is now 18 months. he has been sole dog at home but has regularly had my mothers dalmatian to stay with us and welcomes other dogs into our house. two weeks ago i was contacted by rescue home about millie-another saluki cross female,approx 6 months old in desperate need of home-we think she has been dumped by gypsys-her dew claws had been removed and not profesionally!! she is the sweetest friendliest little thing despite what has happened to her-now her and lou seem to be really good friends-they play together altho it can get bit rough but nothing more than he does with mums dalmatian-they have seperate beds but chose to curl up together in one bed-i have been very careful to give him more fuss than her and have also taken him out just me for walks as well as walks with her!! but today when walking ,he is off lead-he charged across a field to play with another dog, being a saluki he is selectively deaf!! i caught him put him back on lead and walked in opposite direction-when we were well out of sight of other dog i let him off and he just bolted across the whole field again to get back to other dog and when i finally caught up with him i could not catch him and when eventually i did it seemed he did not want to come with me-cue me getting very upset as i have had a bad day and my walks with him normally really cheer me up!! does it sound like he is jealous and any tips-im bit worried bout letting him off his lead tomorrow in case he bolts again. sorry this is long but just hope i did the right thing rescuing the bitch??

Have you thought that it could be something to do with being entire??
Sounds like it to me.
If you are not willing to get him the snip then i think he should be kept on lead as its not fair to the other dogs and owners.

I really don't think it is anything to do with the bitch but my advice would be to get both of them done and maybe invest in some training classes.

This happened to us when we got a second dog too!!

Our gorgeous, person-orientated, well behaved (entire) girlie became all dominant with the new dog first (neutered bitch)which we expected and endorsed as they needed to establish their pecking order, and then really seemed to change her personality towards us too!

Now she will run hundreds of meters ahead of us when in open fields, where she would have stayed within 50m range before

and she wont necessarily sit when she is asked

She has also started climbing on us when we're on the sofa (she has always been on the furniture but previously respected our space- as much as a vizsla can!!) oh and has started eating socks

I suspect she took our additional affection (given to stop her getting jealous) as a sign of pack leader weakness and is trying to dominate us too

so OH and I have made a concerted effort to endorse her hierarchy over Ruby whilst maintaining our hierarchy over her (obviously I will knock OH back into place once the dogs are sorted

)

Ooh I should have added (because it's most relevant to you!!) that she has also become increasingly dominant to other dogs, almost like she doesn't want Ruby to see her being submissive??

maybe i did not make it clear in post-when i say selectively deaf i mean when when chasing rabbits or squirrels not other dogs-this is a first for him-hence my concern!!he has not done this before-the other dog was a neutered male ETA the rescue bitch is being spayed tomorrow

It sounds to me like Lou is behaving like a typical sighthound - mine have ALL been like that, for the past 20 years

Hence you get very very good at spotting other dogs before your own dog does, and putting them on a lead.....

I greatly admire you for taking on another rescue, I refuse to have saluki crosses as I think they have a screw loose

(in the nicest possible way of course!) but it sounds like your two have settled together very well

If the rescue people havent neutered them already (which I assume they would have done) then I would probably do both of them because it is so much easier than coping with a bitch in season and an entire dog

But going back to your question, I think that getting the new rescue has just shown Lou that life can be exciting chasing around, so he is discovering new experiences

I would advise that you either keep him on a lead or make sure you see the other dogs before he does so you can grab him

I on't think it sounds like it has anything to do with being jelous of your other dog

as u suggested yourself he can be selectivly deaf......alot of "sight hounds do the dash for anything that is running and ignore the owner in the process thing"

I would long line him for a while till u can get his recall a little more effective, alot of folk I know don't even let their saluki off unless in a very secluded non doggy area, they are not the best for recall

Oh thats good about the rescue bitch

But I would still say this is 'just' sighthound behaviour, you have been lucky that he hasnt done it before TBH

They just will chase anything which moves..

the bitch is being spayed tomorrow-i have never considered having him castrated as he has never shown any kind of entire behaviour apart from cocking his leg alot when walking!! the bitch has not been let off lead yet nor do i ever think she will be able to as im not sure that she has not been coursed at some point in her short life!! will def be putting him back on lead now if i see any dogs in near vicinity!!

I've got say that we never castrated the lurcher we had from a puppy for exactly that reason, so I can see exactly where you are coming from there

I've had rescue greyhounds who were like your bitch sounds to be - in fact Islay, one of my current ones is just like that - you let her off the lead and she disapears over the horizon

So I have every sympathy with you about that
