I don't know henryhorn, I personally love reading your blog etc and genuinely love your posts. Never entered my mind that you were advertising. Don't let other people get you down, sometimes it is hard to bite your tongue but I for one love 'boasting' about my minimal successes with my horses. God knows, i have enough down moments. Chin up, and by the way on a personal note, i couldn't care less if someone was advertising or not, why on earth should I, it doesn't affect me! xx
lol i try NOT to make that my motive when i post pics about my horses because i am bound to say something that may put a buyer off! haha. i just hope if someone does see a horse i have for sale and a pic of them that they realise i love them! thats all!
I think there may be some motive there with some to promote horses for sale or stud but I think they have every right to put the pics up as long as it is not a directly worded ad! I also feel that people are proud of their horses and just want to show them off.
I think it also helps out the people on here who may be looking.
come to think of it, if someone could say THAT was advertsing why not ban all photos altogether?
afterall, I posted pics on here of a pony we had and boasted about how he was doing etc, to the point where most people knew what he was...
When I decided to sell him I posted on here that i was selling him and in the end he found a wonderful home with a forum member. I wasnt directly advertising but some could argue I was advertising indirectly, but hand on heart, never intended to...
Sod it, lets just stop talking about our horses altogether...
ahhh _charlie_ that actually sounds like a really nice story, that your horse went to a fellow form member! from what u have said it doesnt sound l ike u advertised ur horse at all, just a horsey owner proud with their horse!

that is what we all want to see!

Agree with this (no matter what you personally think about me!)
HH we may not have seen eye to eye over a few matters a wee while ago but I hope that is all dead and buried now lol
I am posting now in defence of you as I believe you are a truly nice person who knows a lot about horses, and I too enjoyed reading your blog. Haven't read it for a while though I admit, but I have read it and enjoyed the pics too.
Your horses are lovely and I agree it is nice to read about them and to see the pictures of the horses you are talking about and I think that applies to anyone on here who does the same.
I don't think it is advertising at all and as others have said you have not openly advertised your stallion's stud fee so as such I cannot see how your posts/blogs offend in anyway and how they could be mistaken for advertising.
Take no notice.

Whilst the majority of the breeding forum are helpful and supportive, there is an undercurrent of pettiness and indignation for a small minority, always directed at the same few people, seemingly because of the attention and compliments they receive from others. It's not even proper all-out bitching, it's the passive agressive undercurrent - a lot is implied rather than just straight out said, that or someone grasses to an admin.

what do you mean by "No matter what you personally think about me" ????
I do not think anything ill of you if that's what you meant
No,sorry, comment was not for you, HH and I didn't see eye-to-eye over advertising once. Hopefully she is not holding it against me, as I think she is great.
No-one was getting at HH! It was mere observations!
If you tell everyone about the horses you breed and how well they are doing etc... you are promoting your stud/stallion. There is a fine line between advertising and promoting but essentially the end result is money/prestige.
Look at this post. Totally innocent of free advertising? Why not put a wanted ad in H&H? And I am not getting at the poster btw just think it rather naieve to think it not a form of forum advertising.
Let's say I was a dealer. Perfect opportunity to say look at this ad...or of course...I have pmd you! LOL!
Hey ho! You find your horse without having to pay to advertise. Makes total sense to me!
If you post wonderful things about your horse and then say it is for sale havent you promoted it? If you say it is for sale, then you are advertising it. You dont sell a horse via the forum unless you have advertised it for sale or promoted it in some way. Or unless someone has said " I am looking for..."
A lot of HHs pics are not advertising at all but there are a few on her blog that could be considered as advertising.
I am not against it at all! I want to see the pics as much as anyone. I love to see the horses people breed but just feel it is a bit naieve to think that it isnt promoting or advertising to a degree.
As for "I wasnt advertising but I mentioned my horse was for sale after I had told everyone how wonderful it was and I sold it to a forum member but I dont think I was promoting or advertising beggars belief!
Would the horse have been sold if it wasnt for the forum?Maybe. Did it cost any money to advertise it? NO!
How many loan horses go to forum members?
How many are sold via the forum?
It happens all the time.
They just havent paid for it! It goes on in all forums.
As I said before...HH I love your blog! I loved hearing about William and I love seeing your photos. Dont worry about it!
You also post a really good balance of all the horses you have so it is not the same really. Plus the garden and views etc. I may change my mind of course if you start mentioning you are available for landscape gardening!!

I think doziesmummy is right in both her posts, both on the breeding forum & here and right also when she says don't worry about it.
H&H have an anti-advertising policy (presumably free advertising loses them income?) and they aren't worrying about it- so why should you?
I think we all draw the line between the sort of advertising that is often unconscious or just good PR and the sort of blatant advertising that is intrusive & should be forbidden; I'm sure you can tell yourself when someone is pushing it a bit, & I don't think you would post what you might object to reading.
I don't dislike even more blatant advertising myself, though, because you can ask questions & heckle in a way that you couldn't otherwise do.
There wouldn't be much left of the breeding forum if all commercial considerations were stripped out of it for fear that they constituted advertising. There would be no stallion owners or promoters, or even mare owners who might sell the foal. There would be no breeding advice from AP- because he makes his living in this business. Futurities, etc. could not be mentioned- they charge an entrance fee. Studbook gradings- wrong to promote a particular studbook as there are financial implications. No mention of grading youngstock, as this makes them more marketable. Advice on which stallion to use, etc., would no longer be appropriate.
In the end there'd just be me... talking to myself...

LOL! alleycat as usual you have made exactly the points I wanted to make, and done it far more eloquently than I could have!
The Breeding forum, and indeed NL, would be extremely dull were it not for the unspoken understanding among us that it's OK to post photos of one's horses and news about their achievements (whether they be stallions, mares, geldings or foals) without this being regarded as 'advertising'.
Just to clarify the origin of all this - Dooziemummy's post on the Breeding forum was perfectly polite and just pointed out, quite fairly, that a lot of such posts do 'promote'/'advertise' the owners' horses, whether or not this is their intention. She did specifically say that she would not wish to ban such posts and enjoyed seeing the photos, etc.
I am glad DM brought this issue out into the open, so we could discuss it and clarify it - and acknowledge that the forum would be deadly dull without these posts!
It was another member who accused me, and by implication anyone else who posts photos/news about foals/stallions (i.e. pretty much everyone on the Breeding forum), of intentional and blatant advertising. Hence HH's concerns.
Please HH, do NOT stop your blog, or any of your other delightful posts and photos!
