Is the horse industry stupid?

There will always be far more people who want to work 'with horses' than there are jobs, therefore the jobs are highly sought after and can get away with low rates of pay. Most people work with horses for the sheer love of it, not because they are out to make money.

On the subject of imported goods, these goods (be they manufactured or farmed) are vital to the economy of developing countries, and part of the reason we are being encouraged to eat local food is not because of environmental issues, but because western governments are terrified of helping bolster any developing economies. You may edit the grammar of that sentence if you wish!

Actually, this isn't true - most employers struggle to fill groom vacancies at the moment....and colleges are inundated with employers begging for students as staff. There are labour shortages in the equine industry - I have been told that there are shortages of instructors too.

I would have loved minimum wage when I worked with horses!

I did a 60/h week of yard work, breaking and schooling, and teaching for....................

£80 a week.

Of which £30 was deducted before I got it for the livery of my horse.

Am now hapilly working in a factory for £7 an hour. I earn in one day what I earnt in a week doing a totally unskilled, brainless job.

Now that is stupid. And I'm a mug.

I honestly didn't know that. In that case, maybe the shortage is as a result of the appalling pay. Hopefully the pay will need to increase to encourage people to fill the vacancies.

Yes, I think you are right regarding pay - only when pay increases will people move back into the industry.
