I remember being told Highlands were good for novices and were ploddy. Can I have a refund please because mine is defective? :p

Went for hack to start fitness programme. We trotted most of the way with some sporadic, no brake canter's along the way. We went past some workmen who probably think we're a bit mental as at that point I was explaining the finer points of the various gaits.

"Walk is a 4-time beat and trot is a 2-time beat and you horse are doing the latter but you should in actual fact be doing the former." I can't imagine why but said pony ignored me.
A 30 minute slow, leisurely hack turned into a 15 minute, don't want to enjoy the scenery today hack.

Said pony has not been ridden for 4 months and barely broke a sweat and breathing was back to regular within 10 minutes. Urgh, my own fitness is terrible.

So, kimblewick time me thinks. Unable to school as fields are too wet.

Lol. Well, she was known as Racing Stripes at a previous livery yard :D :p

She is such a devil. Must get her to the beach and get the tickles out from under her feet, lol.

Definitely a TB in Highland's clothing!

Probably the most fun thing you will get to ride if your pony is anything like the Highland I used to have who would gladly turn his hoof to anything.

LOL bless her, she's cute :D

If it's any consolation, mine's no better at the moment  - everything must be done at the fastest pace he can get away with

She looks lovely and a lot of fun. I ride a Welsh Cob at the moment but also fancy getting a highland. They have so much character and good for hacking I think which is what I mainly do. Welshies and Highlands have a lot more go in them than people think!

She is fab...
Hope to see you at the highland pony ODE next September?
Or indeed at some other events on your speedy lady.

Oooh, whereabouts? Can unreg poneis be entered? :D

She is a lot of fun and loves hacking - but only if its a new place to explore and sticking to paths is boring - she'd rather go fast through the trees, quite happily leaving her friends on the path and making them worried as she disappears without them.

Thanks everyone :D she is a fab little pony. can't wait to go hunting with her. She also loves to jump so planning to go XC too. :D

She does a good balancing act in the first pic doesnt she :D

Lol. Some of the pics I've got of her are unbelievable.
I used to give her treats from a bumbag to get her to stand still as I looked at my map to see how lost we were.
She would be trotting along and if I made the slightest gesture to my bag, she would turn her head to see if she's getting a treat - still trotting along mind you. That felt horrible and utterly bizarre!!

My Welshie does that too. As soon as I touch my pocket when riding along he seems to know and looks around for a treat especially after a canter - he seems to think he deserves it after going fast!

The highland pony ODE is usually at Doune, think unregistered can go in the m&m class which runs on the same day.
Where do you plan to hunt? I'd love to take mine but we are in Angus and not really anywhere nearby. Jump x is at Brechin though, your highland could do that. Starts march.

To add to my previous post.. whatever are you doing to her? Poor skinny little fine boned TB out without triple rugs?? And she needs fattening up. Poor baby.

As a child I always hankered after a HiPo.. my pin-up was a stallion called Rhum Bloodstone. Other girls had popstars on their walls.. I had HiPos!! For some reason we ended up with Welshies! She is gorgeous.

I've never once met a steady HiPo, I've found them to be really sensitive and sharp and they need their minds occupying all the time, I'd rather have my dippy TB than my friends rodeo HiPo anyday! lol

[I remember being told Highlands were good for novices and were ploddy. .

It has taken me a bit of time to stop laughing before I could type:D

Yep I was told that by a friend who has a couple. Took one to a show - got bucked all round the show field during the warm up - this is true do not let anyone tell you a highland cannot buck- not a couple of bucks - all round a 15-20 acre field as soon as I put her into canter - people were taking photo's for gods sake- one helpful soul did shout keep sitting up - would have preferred that they had rugby tackled the damn thing to stop it:D

Oh and a tip if you are ever in this situation - pushing them forward just makes them buck quicker!

I recovered my composure but then was carried at speed bucking and farting out of the ring during the lap of honour.

Should have learnt my lesson, but then she asked me to hack out her just backed youngster - trot was a revelation - I have never actually been trotted off with before.

Still I continued (she must be a good friend) then I discovered how Highlands like to off road :D:D:eek:

Bloody overgrown Sh**lands the lot of them:D

Buck like a demon don't they!! Having been ditched quite spectacularly more than once by my friends HiPo - never again!
Bloody things head totally disappears between its knees and it does sodding handstands - stops for a second to evaluate whether you're still on board then goes again! :D

No sure which is worse - to be fair they are built like sheds so it was like sitting on a bucking arm chair.

Think I was more peturbed when one moment I was hacking nicely along the road - the other I was on top of a 6ft hedge.

Again this is true - do not be fooled by these creatures:D:D:D
