I have booked pony into vets for a flu vaccine and teeth doing

The vets are squeezing me in on thursday morning as they are at a big yard doing a general yard visit that day - the yard is about 1/2 mile up the road from mine.

It will cost me the usual 30 for vaccine and 25 for teeth so no worries there BUT they are going to charge me £45 for the call out fee!?? They said its worked out on mileage and thats why its so expensive!! Its expensive milage too as they are only 7 miles drive away so thats 6.40 per mile!!!!

I cant believe it !!! I told them that this was a joke esp when they are up the road anyway - they are going to re look at the call out fee and call me back.

It just seems like vets are really out to drain you of every penny you can get these days!!

I am going to see if another vet can do it cheaper - its just a bind changing and making sure they can carry on her vaccine course without having to start it again!!!

Does seem like a lot, but not sure what prices are like where you are. We have a routine visit every tuesday so visits cost about £9 usually

My vets are 12miles away and charge £48 + VAT for turnout, they are expensive, but i don't think they'd charge so much if I knew they were in the area

often find vets charge you mileage from the surgery even if they are only around the corner..............rip offs...........they then charge you for their time and ontop of that they then charge for an examination. i think the examination should be included in their time.........................

should be a shared visit - even if you pay half and the yard they were visiting anyway coughs for half

that would be normal

you certainly shouldn't be paying a full call out charge

My vet has a standard charge for routine call outs - I think its about £17 to come to us, which is about 20 miles from the surgery which i don't think is too bad.

Mine charge £45 call out. We normally have the vet out for vaccines etc. when all the horses are to be vaccinated so then we just share the call out fee.

Ha - they vets have just called me back and oh guess what ? The call out fee has gone from £45 to £17.50 within an hour! Honestly I felt like going crazy at them - I cant believe the check! But never mind - got the result in the end!

It always worth haggling !!

Ours has just gone up to £40, but they are quite a long way away. I wouldn't use any other vets though.

Even if the yard is a little way up the road from you, it doesn't mean you are due half a call out fee because you don't have anything to do with the yard. It's not like your sharing the visit with someone.

As for the time/examination fee, you are paying for a quailfied person to examine and treat your horse, not some tom, dick or harry!

So what if I have nothing to do with the other yard?

This is all about consumer rights here - there is NO WAY I am having a vet make even more money out of me than is needed! If you look at my last post - you will see it didnt take them long to put the call out fee down - a clear indication that they knew they were taking the p*ss.

Its a joke!!

It's pretty usual I'm afraid. And one of the major bug bears I think of all of us.

Why not just hack down to the yard that the vet will be at????

Hello amymay

I was going to do this as its my old yard and I thought they would let me as we are on good terms but when I asked them they said 'yes but you will have to give us £15 for stable rent for the hour you are here'

Daft daft daft - anyway I am only paying £17 now so I am happy.
