Is this because she's in season?

Sorry if this is a completely ridiculous thread but I literally know absolutely nothing about mares!

So the mare that was at the yard when I arrived (some of you may remember my previous thread) has come into season over the last couple of days. I think it must be a really strong one because my rising 4 year old gelding mounted her in the field the other day and she stood for him until I managed to get in and separate them! He has been turned out in a mixed herd all his life before I got him and mixed since I've had him with nothing like this before! She has been electric fenced away so that there aren't any accidents! But as I mentioned in my last thread she has always been very mareish and threatening in her behaviour until she settles but even then is very very distrusting. Anyway since she has been in season she has not left me alone, she follows me around the field and follows me around the stable. She will literally pull me into her side with her head and just hold me there wanting a fuss! Is this normal behaviour for a mare in season or something I should be worried about? At first before I realised she was in season I thought we'd had a breakthrough and she finally trusted me! Then I thought she was ill because it's completely out of character but she is otherwise fine in herself other than this.

Sorry for the ramble it's just so unlike her! Although would be quite nice if she stayed this way haha!

I don't know if its because she is in season that she is following you like that!! my mare was always a horrible witch when she was in season, certainly wouldn't want hugs (although she is not a very huggy horse)

my thought would be that she has been sooo lonely and now trust you that she might be becoming a bit clingy!

I had a mare on loan once that had been turned out for a number of months and pretty much retired, when she was having her feet done, she stood there licking my jacket the whole time!! my farrier said that he'd seen that in horses that have been left for a long time!! although she was checked every day, she didn't do any work for a while!

I wondered if that could be what it was, I have tried so hard with her to help her trust people and would love for it to be paying off! I guess time will tell when she's out of season if she goes back to her old ways but I hope not. She has been absolutely lovely and a pleasure to be around and I'm sure she's enjoying the fuss as well! I'm starting to worry I'm getting too attached haha!

sounds like it is paying off!! she might be a bit more clingy because you've got her on her own and will probably be less like it once she is back out with your boy! but defo sounds like you're getting somewhere with her!! she probably feels really lucky to have found you :)

Yeah I thought that, they can all stoll see each other it's just that I didn't want anyone getting hurt and it was causing fights between my two geldings as my older boy likes to treat women with respect hahaha he didn't approve of the youngsters behaviour at all! Aww I hope so, I'm determined to make her lovely and find her a perfect home!

A picture of the trio all waiting for me to turn them out!

My made becomes annoyingly clingy/cuddly when she's in season! Usually, when not in season, she is just very hormonal and more likely to kick than cuddle!

My mare has a complete personality transplant when she's in season (and she seasons like clockwork, every 3 weeks, for most of the year)

Out of season, she's aloof, sharp and not very affectionate, and pulls awful faces in the stable (though not a kicker or biter). In season, she's clingy, cuddly, totally chilled out, very affectionate, rather lethargic, and almost impossible to handle in the stable purely because all she wants is to 'hug' in the way you describe, pulling me into her shoulder with her neck. We call it the Remi head lock! She also becomes hard work to school as she's so dreamy and lethargic, and maybe some ovary pain, although she doesn't show any outwards signs of discomfort.

I've tried Angus castus to see if I could get some sort of happy medium. I thought at first it was working but as time has gone on, it doesn't seem to be...

Damn it's seeming more likely that it is due to her being in season. This mare sounds pretty identical to yours though! She's been impossible to get a headcollar on or lead because she just wants to be close to you all the time whereas normal she has exceptional manners!

Part of me can't wait for her to come out of season so they can all go back together and another wants her to stay in season permanently haha.

I've got three mares here, and they all have personality transplants when they are in season. They're all nice girls anyway, but definitely more cuddly with people when their hormones kick in. Two are raging trollops, who shamelessly come on to the geldings - and one of them will squirt if you touch her hind legs. I've learned the hard way to take evasive action when changing her rugs!

Alf is a bit riggy, so he LOVES the female attention!

What have you decided to do with her now? Are you still hoping to find her a home in the spring?

The plan is to still find here a home in the spring, however her plan seems to be to sweeten me up and it appears to be working! I seriously need someone to talk me out of having 3 horses!

Oh gosh! I've never had a mare before so I've never encountered any of this! It's all very new. My gelding is completely lovestruck with her!

It does sound like she's a great companion for your boys. Why not see if anybody will have her on full loan to stay at the yard? Would the farmer go for this do you think?

That's an idea I hadn't thought of actually! I can definitely speak to him about it, I don't think he would mind as long as she wasn't his problem :(

Well... Its normal for a mare to develop vices (kicking, biting, etc) and also normal for it to become clingy.Yes, it probably is because she's in season. I've got a question though.
Is this her first foal?
Hope you and your horses have fun!
😊

The mare isn't in foal! She wouldn't be in season if she was pregnant!

My mare is exactly like Remi. An aloof grumpy witch most of the time, and then sweet and affectionate in season.
I nearly bought a mare that was incredibly sweet when I viewed it in season. It was a long way away so I didn't attend the vetting the following week. The vet called me and said she was sound but he hadn't been able to look at one of her feet or check her eyes as neither he nor the owner could hold her. Apparently she kicked and bit and all sorts. The vet said he had seen people trying to sell mares in season like this before that were complete nightmares otherwise. Sorry OP!
