I'd give BMW a call and discuss it with them, I wouldn't personally tow with a car, but the 401 is only a small trailer, so it may be ok, I would be worried about whether the weight of the trailer would drag the back of the car down.
The trailer is braked (as are all modern horse trailers), so the 1800 kg limit applies. It simply means that when you brake your car the trailer applies it's own brakes at the same time, so you are not dependent on the car weight/brakes to hold it. Unlike a simple trailer for towing 'stuff' where the only thing stopping it is the towing vehicle.
It's not ideal but workable. The BMW 520d has a max braked towing weight of 2000 kg and a kerbweight of 1675kg. Ifor single trailer weighs 770 and your horse is 650 so total of 1420kg - you are well within your kerbweight and max towing weight of the car. Personally I wouldn't want to tow with a car but often we have no option and have to compromise. I recently lost my LR Disco in a relationship break up and then wrapped my little clio round a tree. So, I've compromised on a Mondeo estate with a towing capactiy of 1800kg and a kerb weight of about 1400kg. I'll be towing a 16hh WB that weighs about 550 and will be hiring an Ifor single weighing 770 so 1320kg load - tack and extras will go in the boot of the car to give it a little more weight. I only go to dressage so no need to worry about towing out of muddy fields and will be careful where I go and the weather on the days i.e. if it's very windy then I won't go. It's not ideal but couldn't afford a good 4x4 and at the minute commute 110 miles each day so needed an economical car.
WHY THE HELL ARE YOU EVEN CONSIDERING BUYING A SODDING BMW WHEN THEY HAVE JUST COST THE BHS A PILE OF MONEY FIGHTING TO SAVE THE BRIDLEWAY IN OXFORD, THERE ARE LOTS OF OTHER BETTER CARS AVAILABLE, YOUR FUNDING BMW AGAINST THE HORSE WORLD, PLEASE PLEASE BUY SOMETHING ELSE, AND YES IM SHOUTING

. The combination is only hypothetical at the moment
but it is good to know that mathematically it is ok, just not ideal practically. I would only be going to unaffiliated dressage, fun rides and would want hard standing to pull up on.
S_V 110 miles a day
I do 80 miles to get to my yard and that is my limit, dont know how you manage?!
Irrelevant point re: the BHS, poster was not asking opinions on brands!
Having worked around Oxford and seen the bridle way, it did not get used much (other than horsey people wanting to go to Next and the rest of the retail park....) and it was insanity to fight for it - BHS should have negotiated a new one on the outskirts of the plant... my two pennith.

Nah the member is entitiled to their opinion ... to which they have clearly expressed
.
Heaven forbid I go to work to earn my own money, and spend it on what I wish ...... I would like the member to come up with a suitable car to fit the required profile:
Capable of towing a single trailer with a ISH in.
Large enough boot for 2 greyhounds.
Car will do 30k miles a year.
Needs to be fuel ecomonical.
Servicing needs to be good value.
Must NOT break down.
Must not be more than 3 years old.
Well yes of course if you allready have one it's a bit late, but why buy one now, whats the point of us donating money to the BHS and Ramblers association to pay bloody court costs fighting BMW and then buying a sodding car off them, I donated £50.00 bloody hard earned pounds to support us all, and riders are still buying bloody cars and spares and servicing off them I COULD FRIGGIN SPIT, MAKES ME SO ANGRY, is everyone living in a bubble, it was on H&H and Bridleways and the telly, do we want our rights of way and off road riding or not or YES OR NO.

Probably for the same reason that the farmers who shout about buying british only, then go out and buy foreign cars.
Cos British cars are pretty crap, and BMWs are the dogs dangly bits.
Lets put it this way, when a rider and horse get injured riding on the road in Oxford because they were forced off the bridleway onto the busy road by BMW's big boy beligerant attitude against horse riders (not walkers and cyclist they get an alternative route) you can give yourself a big pat on the back and say "I helped to fund that" well done, I genuinally hope it isn't you or anyone you know.
Merc's are good as you get free breakdown cover with them, plus the interiors are nicer than BMW's (my opinion!).
If you want a BMW then go and buy one, yes the BHS had to fight them but you not buying 1 car isn't going to save the world!
All car companies are the same more or less in their attitude to people. Can't think of a car that would do the job better either - the engine is brilliant and the cars are reliable. Do you even know it's brand new - if second hand the purchase in no way fund BMW (other than funding a franchised dealer to pay for his franchise).
Do you (Pedantic) really think that Audi/VW or Mercedes would have acted differently in the same situation? The BMW engine is about the best for the job - more fuel efficient and with better torque than many larger engines.
Nothing to do with the BHS / BMW issue but you should also consider the audi A4 quatro TDI or the volvo V70 AWD. Both are excellent tow vechiles (have towed 35ft long trailer to lithuania and back with audi) and you might just find the 4wd very useful at times

Will certainly explore all avenues or should that be bridleways
I just want to know if we do get rid of our 4x4 that I can still get out and about.

Yes but it wasnt another car company was it,it was BMW
I used to happily tow with a 528se touring which was very good with similar weight to you and never had any problems with it at all. a 520 is legal yes but I'd was advised against it when I bought mine as the pulling capacity on it meant any hills would be a struggle.
(I still have it sat in the garage waiting to go in autotrader when i can get round to taking pics - if you are interested in buying it PM me!!!)
Pedantic - ever heard the saying 'One swallow does not make a summer'?
Do you honestly think that the OP selling/not buying her BMW would make one iota of difference to BMW's trade? Your opinion that, if a horse and rider have an accident on the road due to the bridlepath fiasco, the OP will have had a hand in it is, quite honestly, completely farcical and pathetic. Grow up!
My argument is the same to people who blow their top about people driving 4x4s - do you honestly think that a few greenies refusing to drive a 4x4 will make the manufacturer's cease their production?
Do you think one person refusing to eat meat would make any difference to the slaughter trade?
Grow up, Pedantic, you've only made yourself look silly!
(For the record, I LOVE BMWs - as soon as I can afford it, I will be buying a 1 Series, and when I am rich *cough cough* I will be going straight out to buy a gas guzzling Z4!!!!

Fine I'll ask BHS for my donation back, I didnt realise that horse people were so "stuff everyone else" last time I donate to anything, particularly horse related, I should have known in this day and age nobody sticks together, it's all as long as I'm allright jack, maybe you dont know how much time effort and stress went into fighting BMW, some ladies were on the stand for hours and had an awfull lot to put up with from BMW's legal team and a biased judge, well when it's your part of the world that they want to close for a road, housing site, factory or whatever one thing you will be able to count on is that I wont be supporting you, you can think about it next time some twat in a BMW zooms past you on the road because "your" hacking route has just been turned into a sustrans cycle track, NO HORSES, it's you that needs to grow up and open your eyes to whats happening, do you live in bubble or what.
I seriously can't believe you are so shallow and pathetic as to go and post on another forum about this - do you really think other people dont read on other forums? If youve got something to say to the OP say it on here, dont go whining off somewhere else
Oh, and the OP isnt even about 'supporting' BMW - the OP was simply asking for peoples views on whether the car was suitable for towing the mentioned trailer.
