Is this dog....

I haven't seen these pinch collars in use so can't possibly comment.
I walk my rottie in a halti. She trots along quite happily by my side and it gives me just that extra bit of control when some numpty lets their dog run up to her.The halti also gives me the opportunity to shut her mouth if I need to.
If I walk her on an ordinary collar she just pulls, at least with the halti she treats it with a bit of respect and is then a pleasure to walk.

I am in the land of pinch collars!

And whilst i don't have a problem with them at all i do have a problem with the amount of people that use them as regular collars here.

A couple i know have a pit that is the loveliest dog ever and is constanly walked on a pinch collar pulling at the end of her lead.

As for the collar.I have no idea... I thought you were on about the choke chain....ive never heard of a pinch collar before.

Im assuming that like any piece of equitment its grand ...in the right hands and bad in those who dont use it correctly..

Choke chain ...shrugs... we walk our dog in one out of habit its attached to her lead.I can remember the last time she had to be checked using it....did come in very handy with the previous lab who we took on as an untrained 2 year old though..he was quite capable of pulling adults over when he boundered off when we first got him!

On a side note i HATE extendable leads!
well no...mostly i hate owners who like to let their dogs wander ahead of them across foot paths etc while your trying to walk by trying not to get tangled up between dog and lead.
grrr

Is it that difficult to train a dog to heel?
I know we always had labs and their known for being easy to train but are breeds like terriers and collie's(the main culprits) that different?

Thankyou Aru

Katie, see I don't like them as a main collar - but that proves as Cayla would say, how high a dog's pain threshold is, especially a pit.

Digger, a Halti was suggested but he hates anything which restricts or is touching his head or face. Also with the type of work we are doing I need him to be respectful of a collar around his neck so would not want to send him conflicting messages.

As an aside, we are just back from the beach, a retriever bounced up to him barking in his face, I asked him to walk on, to heel, and he did.
A few months ago, that would not have happened.

I don't like them as a main collar either, but it seems its the norm here and i even saw an advert for a young dog training class when it said that your dog needed to wear one to first class.

I use a flexi on our new dog.

I only use it when we get on the trails. every other time he has a normal leather leash.

He never goes more than 6 feet away from me and has never got to the end of it.

But he likes to sniff and the flexi is great for hiking with him because his recall is not 100% yet.

Again Katie, I don't think anyone was thinking of people like you and the others on this forum who use flexi leads....we're talking spivs

I know but i don't want people to think that its a bad thing for people to use them if they are responsible its not a problem.

I know when new people come on and read things and freak out that they are doing something so wrong when they are using said thing responsibly.

Definately just a rant about the spivs
grin.gif

I can see how they are a great idea....especially when training a dog who hasnt coped what recall is

I just dont appreciate being made get off the footpath onto a road in order to get around someones dog....
smirk.gif

bad manners more than the lead really i suppose
