Im going away to work for a year so was going to put my horse on loan but after a couple of viewings I just can't be bothered with it all really. So I was wondering if there's such a thing as a broodmare loan ? I was thinking of contacting some breeding yards and seeing if they'd take her for a year and breed from her ? And obviously keep the foal at the end. She's a lovely mare and I wanted to breed from her in the long run so this would be a perfect situation. Thanks for reading ! Any advice would be great !!

Yes! it is possible, a friend of mine who is at the same livery yard has loaned out her unbroken mare to someone, they do in hand showing and showing with a foal at foot, they can keep her for as long as they want but the only clause is they cant breed year after year, they have to give her a season or two off

yes, it is possuible, we have one of ours out on loan to a stud with a 50/50 interest in the foal. It would REALLY depend on the breeding and cv of yuour horse as to whether anyone would be interested or not.

I guess it depends when you're going away really.... she wouldn't be getting covered till Spring 2012 now, so wouldn't foal until 2013.....

Is she well bred? And without causing offence would anyone want to breed from her? And is she good enough to breed from? (would love to breed from one of mine but a bendy leg makes it a no no!)

I know of someone that has done this, but it was a cracking mare (ex advanced eventer). All went well.

And if you do it goes with out saying that you'd want a water tight contract - there is so many potential areas for error/risk. Has she had a foal before? What if they can't get her in foal or they lose it? Obviously they wont want her anymore if that is the case.....

I always think you don't know until you ask - so worth a try. But personally (and knowing what a mindfield loaning is) I would say a conventinal loan would be potentially less problematic, but obviously if you can't find anyone then thats not really an option!! Have you considered loaning her to a recomended college? Or maybe even a "decent" riding school?

Hope you find a solution, and hopefully they'll be others on here that have had first hand experience :)

Thank you for your replies ! It has given me some hope. The problem I'm having loaning her is I find the loan Market is for people who want to dabble in the thought of having a horse and are looking to improve their riding. She is a KWPN registered Dutch warmblood and jumps 1.50 tracks and I find the people that have the ability to ride this kind of horse have their own. maybe I am looking in the wrong place but I just can't find anyone with the experience I want for her. She hasn't had a foal before and has no health issues and I think she could have a lovely foal.

If she wasnt an amazing mare could you not loan her to somebody who is looking for a mare to do embryo transfers? I hope thats the right word. Then she has another mares foaly inside her. A friend once did this with her mare who then carried somebody elses dressage horses foal

To be honest I would have no idea how to go about this or who to contact, thank you for the suggestion tho.

She sometimes gets a stiff shoulder so I wouldn't want that to happen if she did and then I would be left with a homeless horse :p I often question the training methods of showjumpers anyway.
