I 'sold' my mare to a lovely girl about a year and a half ago. I say 'sold' as she didn't pay me very much money for her at all but I liked her the best and from what I've heard around and about the mare's got a really lovely home now. I sold her with tack, rugs, the lot, for about £200 (she is a cronky old girl, quirky in her ways and has bone spavin). Anyway, while I hear that she's living in the lap of luxury and really enjoying life, I also hear that her new owner doesn't ride her much at all.
I am getting to the point where I need a new saddle for my new boy as his is just not suiting either of us and it is a very forward-cut jumping saddle and I really need something more general purpose for dressage etc.
Would it be a p*ss-take to text my mare's new owner and ask if she would consider selling the saddle to me? It is a gorgeous one that I bought almost brand new and fits her like a glove. I have a suspicion it would do my new boy nicely too.
Also, if she agrees to sell it, what price?? Black Country saddle, as I said, bought almost brand new about 2 1/2 years ago and when it went with the mare it was in top condition. If she's not been riding much it should still be in fairly good nick...
Champagne cocktails all round for getting to the end of this post...

If you don't ask, you don't get

If this girl sells the saddle to you (and there is no guarantee it will fit your new one) and she wants to ride at all she will then have to buy another saddle, which may not fit your old horse.

Would you be comfortable with that?

No, good point Mother Hen, I would not be happy.
Gingerbird, if you'd sat in my old saddle, you would understand. Armchair doesn't even begin to describe it...
But you are both right.... sigh....

Honestly I do understand after having to part with my beloved Albion K2!

The fact you even bothered to ask the question means you knew the 'right' answer really!!!!

Depends - if she is intending to ride then she is better to keep the saddle.
however if she isn't then she may be glad to get a bit of cash for the saddle.

As long as you offer a reasonable amount and don't make her feel pressurised into selling it to you.
Maybe even say if she ever wanted to sell the saddle to give you first refusal.

I have a Black Country Event which I bought secondhand in really good condition for £450 from my saddle fitter.

Yes it is a cheek.

If you can afford to offer to buy the saddle from your mare's new owner then you can afford a second hand one from a saddler surely.

I'm inclined to agree

Especially as you don't know for sure that it would fit your boy.

What size saddle are you looking for?
