Yes, I would compromise on manners on the ground. I have a horse to do a job, and the most important thing to me is that it does that job well. Being good to handle is a nice bonus, but if I was looking to buy something, I wouldn't be put off by the fact that it wasn't easy on the ground. Of my three, one is fairly easy to do, and the other two can be a bit more difficult. Not nasty at all, but young and sharp, so I'm careful about who handles them. My gelding is big and can be very strong and bolshy, and the little mare is a bit light on her front feet. And back feet, actually.
She has been mistreated in the past, and can be very aggressive if she thinks you are having a go. And he is just a big thug. So manners are something we're working on, but I can't say that it's a deal breaker.
