As in, did you have in mind a specific 'type'/height/breed/age/experience level etc, and ended up going with something completely different, just cos it felt right/was a bargain, or something like that??

Or did you stick to what you had in mind, and find one within those specifications?

He's everything I didn't want but I wouldn't swap him for the world

She's pretty much what I wanted, apart from the fact she's not registered. She was slightly smaller than I wanted, but has since grown to the right size!

I wanted a 16.2hh 4/5yr old backed-but-not-ridden-away athletic eventer type but ended up with a 17hh+ (I'm too scared to measure him!) 3yr old who seems to have been neglected for most of his early years. He seems to be ID or Percheron

tbh when i started looking for my first proper horse i didnt really care to much as long as it was semi chunky ended up with the boy i have now he is a total idiot but i love him all the same

Nope, I bought him because he was all I could afford at the time, sounds awful!! After being known as the horse from hell in his former yard (did not know this till paid for him!!) he has turned out to be as soft as grease and a talented boy!! SJ and Dressage!! Wouldn't change him for the world!

def what i was after - she has the best temperment in the world and is so lovely tries her hardest to please - she just needs a leg transplant! now has arthritis in hocks coffin joint and navicular, breaks my heart.

Bodey Cob- yes absolutely, I went out to buy a young coloured cob. However I didn’t bet on getting one that was wild. But he is everything and more that I wanted.

Badger the Fjord- well we had no idea what type/ breed we wanted, all we knew is we wanted something safe for my Mum to plod around on. We just typed in 14-15hh, Kent, into HorseMart and he was the first one on the page. Mum fell in love just from his photo.

everytime I say that's it no more grey mares...what have I got grey mare no. 3 and I love her to bits - she got me riding again when I had the mother & father of falls and thought I'd never get back on a horse again!!

New horse is 16.3hh (or maybe a big bigger - daren't measure) selle francais, a little stressy, know it all type. Done BE novice however not very successfully!!! Lol!!

I wanted a 15.2hh coloured that could do an intro eventually.

So no not really what I wanted but I also insisted on a horse that would find me through word of mouth and she was a friends horse, recently had foal and didn't workout with a pro rider.

I love her to bits! She is also teaching me to ride properly, and I'm teaching her how to not be a stress head.

ETA - I was told she was only about 16hh before she arrived on trial. Only saw her in the distance in a field

I wanted a breed registered Anglo Arab gelding around 5-6 years old, broken fairly late to let him mature, 15.2-16hh, preferably chestnut to do endurance (RAID).

I got a breed registered Anglo Arab gelding, five years old in May this year and broken in March. He is 16hh and is actually registered with the Galician authority who govern equestrian sport in the region as his previous owner was planning to do endurance with him! Only problem is he is a grey - although he was born chestnut according to his carta!!

My 'ideal dream horse'....

2 year old filly, black no markings, sports horse type, would make 15.2 - 15.3 when fully grown.

I bought.....

10 month old colt, piebald, TB x cob, and will make 16.1hh plus!!!!

I decided if I bought a 2 year old I would have a year in the field, handling and forming a bond ready for breaking. I originally thought yearlings were a waste of money having to pay out on them for an additional year to a 2 year old! I had decided a filly was more practical then having another gelding, if and when I have kids, I would have ideally put a mare in foal.

I don't like big horses, I love my 15 handers, and I hate trying to keep socks clean on my bay, hence wanted a dark horse with no markings..... so naturally I bought a coloured with four full white legs which would make over 16.1

wasn't even sure i was going to get another horse but thought if when i did i would get a middle aged schoolmaster, ended up buying the 1st foal i seen just coz he was so cute a spotty TBx he is just simply the best desision i ever made

My horse was advertised as making 15.2 - 15.3 hh (he was a yearling) I thought he was a nice type and a nice height for me so I bought him. The only reason he was for sale is that the guy that bred him thought he was going to be too small for him.

He's now 16.2 hh!!

Most definitely not! Not sure what I wanted, but after an 8 year break from riding, and not being the bravest, it needed to be a fairly steady, kick along type. Che is a 10yr old TB ex racer, he was the right price and for sale locally. His description on Horsemart, however, seemed to fit the bill and after a long chat with Emma and trying him 4 times in a week I took the plunge. I absolutely love this little horse, he is such a softy and a real mummys boy. We are just happy hackers but the quieter life seems to suit him and now I wouldnt swap him for the world.

Nope, I was supposed to be buying a house

Sale fell through and friend asked me to go and look at a horse for her as I lived closer - an unbroken 4 yr old TB mare, 15 yrs on I still have the mare and also have a house

Its hard to remember as it was 1992, I was only 11yrs old when we bought Seren from an auction, I remember loving her straight away and lucky for me my parents liked her too and bought her for me, and here we are over 17yrs later. I never went along with anything in mind, I am not sure my parents were intending on buying a horse that day but think we all fell in love with her.

If I were to buy something now I do have a fairly specific type in mind, I would stick to what I like as I know what type I love, something just like my girl now

Meg only came to me on loan so I could break her in as a late 4 year old- a favour for the owner! I hated her at first - she was a complete cow to handle!!(the horse!! lol) I remember saying to my mum that she was far too small (barely 14.2hh). I broke her in and my attititude changed - she was great little horse. She grew to 15hh (just) and on my affiliated BE debut 2 years later there were balloons outside her stable - my mum had brought her for me. It was also my 22nd birthday. BEST day ever. To this day I have no idea what the price tag was. Ironically she was also the first live foal birth I ever saw back in 1996.

1st one was bought for me by my livery yard owner. He was told 15hh pref solid colour and not a heavy cob,not worried about sex but if it was a mare def not in foal.
I got a 15.2 black mare she was just what I needed. She was a brill hunter. I sold said mare back to him as I wanted something I could do dressage on.
Ended up buying a 16.2 irish gelding. Kept him a couple of years but we didn't get on well. Sold him on to a hunting home and sent my YO on a mission to find me something else.
Same type as my first one please I asked
What did I get ?
14.3 chestnut gelding 2yr old obviously unbroken . He is,I have to say growing into a well rounded beast, standing at 15.2 now and was backed this summer. So fingers crossed my mate has got me another good one !

Be careful what you wish for!

I wanted a native pony that could jump - I have a NF only problem is he decided he does not like being stabled and is a stable jumper and can jump over 4ft through a weaving grill from standstill with ease - so he has to live out.

I wanted a registered native pony quiet enough for a child to ride (I am an adult BTW but just wanted a quiet pony) with a nice nature and a big jump and that is what I got and although his stabling issue is a pain and I had to move yards he is great and I adore him.

yehh shes the opposite to what i wanted.
i wanted a been there, done it type. so i got a newly back 4yo
laugh.gif
and it has not been easy and to this day still isnt ):

When we bought the big mare I went out to choose a larger version of the horse we had, so pretty much unflappable, have a go at anything, easy to deal with, competent performer but not a worldbeater, cope with stressy teenager and just get on with the job in hand. Preferably event to Novice but realistically daughter was never going to want to go bigger than that, if that big. Third horse we looked at fitted the bill. We didn't fall in love with her at first sight but she was exactly right for what we wanted so I decided not to try looking any further.

She has done exactly what she was bought to do. OK we had a rocky start when she was seriously injured and spent 7 months on box rest but in the year my daughter was really riding her they represented the riding club in SJ, dressage and ODE (including getting to the Indoor SJ finals) and also the pony club in those three disciplines as well as doing their first BE event.

So yes, she was what I intended to buy and she has done just what I intended her to do - and we love her to pieces now as well
grin.gif

We won't go into what happened when I went to buy a sensible first pony and ended up with a pony that was such a nutter he was going for meat if we didn't have him!

Kind of. He is the size i wanted. Thats about it!! He is grey - never wanted a grey. Wanted to buy a horse to jump but he is more dressage. He is a victor meldrew of the horse world. I wanted a nice cuddly horse (although he still does have his cuddly moments, just on his terms!) But i love him none the less, he is brilliant fun to hack and he has taught me a lot about my riding! Wouldn't swap him for the world!

Height/type wise, no! I had it in my head that I wanted a 15.2 max gelding, ideally a cob that I could clip right out, hog and show during the summer, hunt during the winter and just have fun at RC level with. I ended up with a leggy 16.2 ish mare, decidedly un-cob like and certainly not hefty, but she is everything I could want and more
