Is your horse what you intended to buy?

First time I wanted a 14.2hh native or cob gelding, I brought a 13.2hh, chestnut, Welsh x Arab. The only thing I got right was the age.

Second time wanted a 14.2hh to 15hh native or cob gelding, preferably dun or roan, that was safe to hack and I got Fudge

Nope, idea was to get a cheap cob-type thing bring him on and sell him at the end of my gap year. Ended up with a brilliant 16.1, selle francaise, mare with a proven competition history!Only thing that was what I intended was the price! Oooops!

Apart from the fact that I was going to wait another year or two before buying...

...er...no.

I'd be looking for a tall German warmblood type, or a TBx, whatever there was in that weight range, 16--17.2hh, gender/colour immaterial (though I have a thing for greys). It would be 4--7 years old, be reasonably sensible, and have dressage potential but be happy to jump a bit.

What I got: a 14.1 7-or-8 yo bay pony gelding with a huge belly, of uncertain breeding, who is the spookiest thing I have ever sat on, bar none, is terrified of jumping, and regularly has panic attacks at very ordinary things. In his defense, his paces are quite nice when he's not giraffing, kick-boxing, or teleporting sideways in a blind panic, and he's very very intelligent. And he actually hacks out very well, cars being one of the few things that don't terrify him!

Mum and I wanted to get a nice allrounder pony 4 years ago. About 13-14hh and anything from 7yrs to 13yrs and pref. not grey... ended up with a 2 and a half year old (now 6) untouched nfxtb and he was grey
tongue.gif
Even though he wasnt the ideal first pony we clicked and have had him ever since
smile.gif
And he has grown to 14.1hh so that was right lol. He does what i want him to do and despite his quirks and health condition there is no way i would ever sell him
smile.gif

I have no idea what i will end up with next time!

I wanted a non grey (didnt care about other colours), 16.2 max ID or IDX type of horse that was a great allrounder for local stuff and most importantly bombproof....

Came back with a grey 17hh 8yr old Dutch Warmblood who was jumping discovery/newcomers and was a medium dressage horse, had him 6 weeks now and he has already bolted the whole way home from a hack with me - but i still abseloutley love him!!

Not at all-I set out looking to buy a happy hacker cob type and ended up with a very talented sport horse who has forced me to up my game somewhat
wink.gif
He is the last thing I expected to buy but has given my heart wings
smile.gif

Horse number 1 - no
Horse number 2 - no
Horse number 3 (I bred her) - not what I expected
Horse number 4 - no, no, a thousand times no.

Horse number 1 & 2 are old but lovely. Horses 3 & 4 drive me potty.

Nope, lol

I set out looking for something 15hh plus, between 6-12yrs old, that had done a little bit of this and that, that i could get on and have some fun with. Wasn't overly worried on breed or gender. Wanted something that would hack out alone and in company.

So what did i come home with ...

14.3hh 3yr old liver chestnut reg welsh D mare that had only been backed for 3 weeks and was a nervous wreck most of the time.
She is now 7yrs old and about 15.1hh and i totally love her to bits. We have been through hell and back to get to where we are now and there is still plenty more to come too but i really wouldn't change her for the world.
smile.gif

A little over 19 years ago....I bought a chestnut mare.....and I still have her. I do sometimes wonder why I did it as she really did have her 'moments'.
confused.gif

I certainly didn't want a mare and certainly not a chestnut one. I love her dearly and (obviously) would never part with her - she's just a great friend and the sweetest girl (now!!!).
grin.gif

NO - not what I intended to buy............!

Second horse i brought was meant to be 15'2" ish cobby type gelding, came home with 16'1" tb in foal mare, did not ever want a TB, but she is just adorable, re-broke her and is quietest to ride.
Old owner rang me when out riding her and said had to be quick as out hacking on mare from him, he would not believe me as she was brought from a racing yard to only be used a broodmare as she was classed as unrideable.
So must of been a luck day for both of us, as she gave me the most fab foal who is now out on loan and doing brill

not really

i wanted a warmblood type, gelding, 16hh+, 4-6yrs ish, backed on going on with nice flashy paces, to eventually do BD on

i ended up with a 16.2 tb exracer who had been of the track 3 weeks, didnt know much and was a mare hmm

but shes lovely

Hahaha i was looking for a 15hh CHUNKY cob
grin.gif

Decided i didnt have £5000 to spare
tongue.gif

So decided to get a foal to mature to 15-16hh.
Went to see a lovely little coloured foal just what i was after.
But did i buy him .. NO!
I bought his 14hh l/w cob mummy
grin.gif

Goddy was, almost 100% but slightly younger than I wanted.

Lucky, no. I wanted a 5-7 yr old preferably gelding who I could go Novice with next year. The only thing that was right with her was her height!! However, of all the ones I tried, although there was 1 other I would have loved, she made the most sense ££ wise and was the one that stuck in my head the most! Even though I didnt like her in the stable and she is completely different to my usual type!! I adore her though
smile.gif
and fingers crossed she works out to be what I want!!

Yes - I spent over 18 months looking for my horse. He is exactly what I wanted and I hope he turns out to be my horse of a lifetime.

I wanted a schoolmaster so I bought a just backed 4 yr old and then I wanted a youngster and got a 12 yr old!! oops!

Wasn't really looking to buy when I got Badger. Got blagged by someone that he had "the perfect horse for me" at a team chase.
tongue.gif

I suppose he would have been the type of horse I'd be looking for.. apart from he's a bit big.

When ever I've looked for horses before not been too specific.

I wanted...6-8yr old, 15.2hh, TB x, preferably a mare, NOT grey!

I bought...9yr old, 16.1hh, Full TB ex-racer, gelding, grey!

I love him tho & if I was buying a second horse tomorrow I'd just look for a slightly younger version, maybe an ex-racer straight off the track

nope neither of them were

wanted a 16hh warmblood/warmblood X mare 6 or 7 dressage potential but would hack and hunt too could go far
bought a 15.2hh welsh D X gelding 11yr old currently turned away for a year in the hope it will chill him out remind him of how to be a horse, make him happier and then hopefully successfully reback him next summer

THEN....could afford another alongside
back to hunting for my 16hh/17hh (height went up) warmblood/warmblood X mare or gelding 6 or 7
same criteria as before

bought a 16.2hh ISH gelding 13yrs (dont tell him that) mainly hacked for 3yrs but wont hack alone not 100% in company done a bit but needed bringing back into work a bit

the result.....2 horses i love to bits and wouldnt change for the world they both mean everything to me and im so lucky to have each of my boys
grin.gif
my warmblood can most definitely wait

Yes and no!

Shopping list was sane sensible pc type for first horse for experienced teenager to have fun on, take out on hacks on her own etc.

Ended up with supposedly that. Only he was a bargain in as much as he'd gone on loan, it had gone wrong, owner had a new horse & not enough time for both so had to sell. So we had to go off old pics and what she told us about him as in front of us was a hairy hat rack. On paper he was right.
In reality he's not particularly suitable as a first horse, can no longer jump due to various injuries and arthritis and can be a real pain in the ar$e. But I wouldn't swap him for the world!

About 13 years ago I had a bay T.B mare on trial and ended up with a 5 month old coloured cob colt instead. He hasn't turned out as expected (a hand too small and heavier then I thought) but he's never let me down and I wouldn't swap him for the world!

Mostly.

When I bought Casper, I wanted a small driving type cob...he's a 15hh riding horse
Harry was pretty much what I had in mind (16.2hh TB type for general riding/SJ/XC)
The next one , Zia, was younger than I had intended to buy (wanted a 10 year old, bought a 4 year old!)
When I bought Sailor, I wanted a dope on a rope, 'bombproof' in the making coloured cob youngster...
...and to look at, that's exactly what he is!! ...only he's not brain dead, he's intelligent, sharp and has the most amazing trot that would put many a warmblood to shame!! *rolls eyes*

i was looking for a 15.2+ between 4-8 gelding, not bay and not a tb i came back with a 15.1 (luckily for her she grow 2 inchs because she was so underweight) 7yr old bay tb mare. but i love her all the same

Nope! I wanted a been there done that safe as houses schoolmaster in his teens. Bought a rising 4.5 year old I came across by accident. Sat on him and that was it, had to have him. Can still vividly remember that moment! It was cool
smile.gif

And I have never, and will never, like coloureds either!!!

The second one (Fudge) yes exactly what I wanted. The first one I went to look at a 14.2hh cob gelding at a rescue centre and ended up with a 13.2hh Arab x Welsh B, chestnut mare.

Zak was everything I shouldnt have had I was 13 and just come off my pony and he was a 16.2hh (made 17hh) 3yo loony. He had been left in a field since he was born and when I had him he wasnt even halter broken and I cant even begin to count how many time I have fallen off him. What I wanted was a 15.2hh PC horse but 10 years on he turned out to be my perfect match and I will never ever sell him.
Zak as a 3yo

Just change the fact that mine was rising 3.5 and I didn't sit on him and that is exactly what happened to me
grin.gif
Oh and I have never liked colour either

As in, did you have in mind a specific 'type'/height/breed/age/experience level etc, and ended up going with something completely different, just cos it felt right/was a bargain, or something like that??

Or did you stick to what you had in mind, and find one within those specifications?

When I last went horse hunting I spent hours writing out a list of everything I DIDN'T want - then went out and bought it!!!!!!!!
