Hi folks!

I bought a set of second hand rugs for my new mare, and found the lightweight stable rug doesn’t have tummy straps….it’s not that they are missing, just that they aren’t there! How do you deal with that? I’m thinking elastic surcingle? ? Or should I get under tummy straps and fit them? Hmm

I tend to cut all the straps and buckles off old rugs when they are wrecked so I can stitch them on other rugs as needed. If you have non ask if any friends have some you can have. Otherwise surcingle.

the tummy straps are a modern invention. rugs were always secured with a surcingle, we used to use leather ones with a bit of sponge on the back in the dark ages. the only slight concern for me with an elastic one is it could move backwards and if your horse is a bit stressy it could get them upset..

Hmmm was sold as a lightweight stable rug OR under rug, I took that to mean it was a rug in its own right, that could always double as a liner, might have been wrong….

It was from a company on eBay with good reviews, all the other rugs in the batch I bought are fantastic. I went second hand as I’ve bitter experience of my old horse ripping new expensive rugs in a matter of days so I’m overall delighted with the purchase. It’s just this one in question…..my mum is great with a sewing machine so I will probably get her on the case!

You could remove some from an old rug and sew some on.

I knock them up myself, inevitably over time you end up needing spare bits so I always have some webbing and fittings (easy to find on ebay) in the sewing box so I can do most repairs that crop up.
