It’s just a colour!

I have 3 black ones  didn't plan it that way particularly

go smaller, buy an up to height fell and then you will have a few to choose from that all tick your colour choice box!
Buy a fell, a black one, then they'll spend most of the time trying to be bay. Does anyone elses black pony constantly get called bay? 24491.png

Well, they very often are!
The true, black-as-the-windows-when-nobody’s-home, blue-black, horses are very uncommon.
We had a lovely pair of black Sec D full brothers, very glam and delightful, but stood next to a seriously black Fell/Friesian harness cob - they looked rather singed by comparison.
At certain times of year, that brown or reddish undertone is more obvious than others.
Hopefully OP will find herself a super, suitable, dark horse, and post photos accordingly!

I am always fascinated by how hard it is to breed blacks unless in a reduced colour gene black breed such as Fells etc. Can remember a huge fashion for black Arabs. Even thr stallions who were homozygous blacks (well according to their owners anyway) pretty much all the offspring were bay. All down to the other allele involved in black which I think is agouti (dont quote me its been a while since I looked it up!)

Quite funny talking to some breeders at the time "yes black foals, chestnut foals etc do turn grey but nope that doesn't mean I'm convinced your bay foal is going to be a black adult!"
Never did get a black Arab.😕

I've had two greys and two black. Perhaps I'm trying to balance my yin/yang?! 🐼

One of the black ones was a Fell mare and the other an Irish Cob who has the same markings as the horse from Brave! I keep meaning to buy the stuffed toy to mark his spot in the tack room...

I had a work colleague who only bought or bred palominos (she had 8 😵‍💫) . And a fellow livery who'd only buy chestnuts. I think colour preference is quite common really. As long as you acknowledge your search will take longer, then it's fine.

Well I've just seen another one (Welsh) I like the look off but it's 4 hours away!!! Sigh - and about 6 hours on the train (not a fan of a lot of driving). Private seller.

My horse search might take some time! 🙈🙈🙈

I’m still fixated on black horses 🙈. I know that’s silly but I turned my boy jet out today and he looked lovely cantering off! He’s semi retired now so looking for another.

Although they are a lot bigger anyway- 16/16.2 Jet is just 15. Is it too much of a leap?!!

Just since you are looking at them: it’s spelt Friesian (not fresian or freisian). Handy to know!

ETA I’ve wondered before why the selling sites don’t have a search function/filter option for colour ; )

Wouldn’t recommend if she is looking for something to jump! Also they are a very acquired ride and type so not for everyone so be careful. (Coming from someone who had looked after and ridden one for the past 7 years).
Wholeheartedly agree, Friesians look splendid in a funeral cortège, but so many issues they’re not for the faint hearted (or financially challenged!)
OP ever considered a nice pair of sunglasses?

Below is just turned three, so lord only knows what colour he was when he was born!

He could be roan and grey. Friend had a blue roan - sire was homozygous for roan, but he inherited the grey gene from his dam, so he gradually became lighter.

He did look roan to start though, and just got more white hairs each year. Not like yours who is a much prettier colour 😍

I'd beg to disagree, friend has one that pops sj and xc v well, her 17yr old son is competing in the RC teams this weekend at the championships at 70 and 80. Purebred mare with a v good pedigree.
Our local small animal head vet also has a 7yr old gelding, he's doing v well in novice dressage and sj at 80 and 90.

Obviously all horses and ponies are different, each breed can have its own quirks and also ones who buck the trend tho 🙂

I think we should normalise buying whatever horse one likes.

Unless you're truly competitive, most of us could all be riding all sorts of things and probably carry on with any amount of our usual riding activities.

I always think it's strange when people get funny about whether my horses were bought for colour when they have bought 'warmblood' because 'dressage' but don't plan to school or compete at any higher level than my banana pony, and there are people who have schooled welsh cobs to Grand Prix.

Buy the horse you like, in the colour you like, with the soundness you need. If you're not looking for a world beater competition horse, there will be plenty of black horses of various breeds who you could do almost anything with.

I'd buy a Fell or a Dales, personally.
