It’s just a colour!

I actually have 2 black horses. I’m always inevitably disappointed in the summer when one of them goes brown. The same one is a manky colour clipped too. So you only get about 1 month in spring and 1 month in autumn where you get the glory of black, then 10 months of disappointment 😆

I love an unusual colour, I put my mare to a buckskin stallion (also really liked him for other reasons!) in hope but he popped out bay 😂

My only stipulation these days would be no greys, cremellos or mostly white coloured, although I would always be tempted by something a bit odd. I wouldn’t want the above due to having greys for 20 years and now I have darker colours, I can appreciate how much more effort going to a show is with a grey!

I did get my buckskin in the end as I bought from the Irish sale with the only stipulation for the agent being no greys.

That's why I have three bays with minimal white, but it turns out clay is lighter coloured than bays, so I threw in a buckskin to see if she's any better!
Only joking, colour wasn't a factor in horse choice (or non choice in the case of the homebred)

On the bright side, OP, there are whole breeds of (nearly) only black horses, fells, dales, friesians, merens...
Yes I missed out on a dales and there is a young fresian cob cross but 10k untried

Am looking for black (ideally!!) 15-15.3 ideally 4-7 yo looking for an all rounder happy to bring on so long as fairly safe and sensible! Mainly looking to do xc

While I totally agree a good horse is not a bad colour, they cost too much in all ways not to have something that doesn't make your heart happy. It might just take you a bit of time to find it.

I will fully admit that I might not have gone to look at the current baby pony if he’d not been buckskin as I was originally adamant I wanted something older & already backed but his pretty face charmed me. (Also I couldn’t afford what I actually wanted!) I wouldn’t have bought him if there hadn’t been other things about him that I’d liked in person but yeah the prettiness was the initial draw

In my defence I’ve wanted a dun or buckskin since I was about 12 just took 5 horses until I got around to it 😂

I did ask about / view / consider horses that were other colours but definitely did some very naughty searching by colour as well!

A good horse is never a bad colour (I even bought a grey after swearing I never would, although given how broken he was I am not in a rush to have another!) but I’m a sucker for a pretty face.

Would say it’s ok to actively seek out your preferred colour but don’t discount horses that fall in your lap that aren’t the “right” colour either.

Here is a picture of the allegedly pretty pony looking like some kind of motheaten nightmare fuel!

Yes I know it makes sense it is just a colour. I’m not aiming for badminton grassroots 🤣 but I think part of it is how much joy my heart horse has given me in 20 years. He’s black with a star on his forehead. I love seeing him canter across the field. He’s a cobby type but gorgeous. Admittedly when I got him I wasn’t looking for a black horse just a sensible one! I’m not in any rush and I still ride him a few times a week he’s just retired from jumping clinics etc and having a nice hacking life with me now. I’ll make that list!

Out of interest has anyine gone up from 15/2 to 16/16.2?
It almost sound like you like black so much because of Jet. But he is also a cob, a nice height, sensible. So maybe you really like him for those last 3 traits.
