hey

Eddie my 12 year old jack russel cross norfolk terrier for the last two weeks has been so itchy.

i have checked him for fleas and found nothing so not really sure what else it could be???

i don't think his skin looks dry and he is not eating anything different.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

actually while i have you here how does dog skin cancer register?? i bathed him the other day and i noticed all these black grainy marks on his belly and his ears not mud but like it.

he is well in himself eating like a jack russell lol

What's he fed on?
Do you smoke?
Have you had new carpet/bedding put in?
Fresh flowers in house?
Do you live near forestry/fields?
Using a new household product or spray?
Could it be a parasite/reaction to parasite?
Any change in routine at all?

he is on pedigree chum and mix
no i don't but hubby does outside only :rolleyes:

yep loads of fields don't really go in them unless putting paddy out.
no new products
i have checked him for tics etc found nothing.
routine has returned to normal now the kids are back at school and we are back to doing paddy every day (which he loves :D)
 
I'd maybe pop him to the vet to be on the safe side.

What's the protein level in his food? It might be a bit too high for him now he's older and slowed down a bit (don't like Pedigree at all but he's survived this long and it might not be wise to go chopping and changing at his age, but maybe a lower protein variety or cut the mixer or the meat half of it)

The vet may recommend (INSERT BRAND NAME HERE) food but it will be on the expensive side and there are cheaper alternatives.

Your vet can also take bloods etc in case it is something more than an allergy. If it is an allergy he or she can recommend an antihistamine, mine is on two human grade Piriton a day but is a much bigger dog! But do check with the vet.

I am sure he will be fine. Aloe vera gel or Malaseb shampoo from the vet on his itchy bits will help take the heat out of it.
 
Im a bit of a food nazi but i have seen this regularly with dogs on a low quality food.

They may have done well on it all their life but their systems just can't take it any more. I would try either switching him to another food or home cooking for him.
 
I am sure he will be fine, some dogs are just 'hot blooded' and maybe that's all it is x
As Katie says you can also home cook for him, whatever you're having, bit of chicken and veg or a potato etc. Easier and cheaper :)

two years ago he had problems with his bladder and so we actually changed his diet from half a can and a handful of mix

i have been thinking about changing it again to senior but don't really know much about senior food. or dealing with a middle aged man lol

the mix we give him is the small mix as he finds it easier to eat.
 
Most senior mixes are just higher calorie with added glucosamin ect.

I would really try and get him off the pedigree its pretty awful stuff. Anything you can buy from a supermarket is not going to be good.

Have a look at james wellbeloved senior mix or better than that Fish4dogs
 
hi thank you again for your advice.

he had another bad night were he was scratching all night.

i phoned the vets this morning and i have an appointment for 4.45 today so watch this space. we are going to speak to the vet regarding his diet and see what he recommends.

ill post about the results tonight about 9pm :D:D
 
hey

so went to the vet :) was actually ok cost £37

the vet looked him all over and thinks its dust mite allergy?? i am not so sure but he is the vet im just the butt head lol!!

he gave drops for fleas and wormers etc and he has given eddie a course of steriods so every day for next 3 days and then every other day.

i asked him about the diet and he said if it is not broke don't fix it :D

He said he is looking good for his age perfect weight so i am delighted :D:D should have him for another 6 years lol :D
