Feeling a bit down this evening :( it's got the that time of the year when sh*tbag really is a sh*tbag....hence why the nick name stuck.

He's starting to get all stressy, wound up, excitable, nervous, basically just a mixture of them all them, obvioulsy his hormones are playing up and its really messing with his head.

He's always drops weight in spring, its hard keeping it on because when I bring him in he's box walking, even rearing up at times and getting himself in a right sweaty state, he's not so bad if I stay with him, eventually he calms down and starts to eat his bucket feed but the moment I turn my back and walk away from the stable and he's screaching and barging into the door and tonight I thought he was going get over the stable door and injure himself, I had to sit outside his stable and read a magazine for 15 minutes just to keep him company while he hate up his bucket feed.:(

I'd taken him off the Gold Label Tranquil (herbal supplement inc, valerian) to try this this Globel Herbs Rig Calm but its seems to off turned him the other way  mind you I suppose it takes a month or so to kick in but I'm not sure if I could combine the two, Globel Herbs don't state on tub whats in it.

Sorry pointless post I know, I just don't like seeing him this way it really gets me down and I just worry about him all the time and how I'm expected to keep him looking well when he won't blooming eat (as in hay/bucket feed) which he needs, even more so when he's doing work.

I do honestly think I've got the most complicated bloody horse in the country.

Moan over.

Is he a rig? Can't he get an operation to sort that out?

Had him tested, certainly not entire as he didnt score high enough, they didnt think he scored enough to warrent being a rig, at the time, however said the results were inconclusive, wrote back and said that there were not prepaired to say that he was, or say that he wasnt either.

Talked about opening him up but was advised that it wasnt worth it, they think it's some tissue that has been left over (not actually both or just one) and that it would be like looking for a needle in hay stack, not only that but it would be risky operation, expensive and they might not locate it so negatives out weighed the positives so to speak.

He had a HRT last year but it was later on in the year and becaus it was off licence drug they were not sure about any side effects if used long term etc.

I don't know if I should push for some kind of scan to make sure there is nothing there

Aw no, so sorry as i remember the troubles you had with him last year and he sounded pretty scary at some points, but you always laugh about it so i'm sorry to hear it's getting you down *hug*

Do global herbs have a number you can ring for advice? Might be worth a google. Can the vets not point you to anyone who might be able to help? It could be worth trying aromatherapy. I'm not really a believer in it but at times like this it is a relatively inexpensive option to try and it might help calm him down a bit. At least you can take comfort int he fact that he obviously feels bonded with you and safe and relaxed when you are around, so you must be doing a lot right. I think i might be pestering the vet again for things to try, that's their job and there must be options out there if they look. Even if they are slightly unorthodox/ not medical.

Chin up and have a raspberry flavour squishy cow head shaped sweet (they are very nice!). x

Thanks hun.

Yes I know I tend spend my time taking the p*ss out of him and making a joke about it, I suppose its my way of dealing with it and looking on the bright side. I've got used to fact that there are times when I can't ride him and I don't get the enjoyment like I would another horse (hence why I've always got something else to ride) but it does get to me when he gets himself stressed up.

Maybe its the joys of spring to adding fuel to the fire, but even in the field another livery said he was going mad (while I was on my way to catching him) just galloping around and rearing up, just playing but he goes too over the top sometimes.

I think I'll give it month, see if settles a bit and then ring the vets again.

I use rig calm on Horrid Herbie. He is not a rig but he was a stallion till he was 7. He is 9 this year. When i first got him before i used rig calm he was a compleate nightmare he even used to mount the mares in the field ( i got him in NOV!!!). He has calmed down alot since being on rig calm. He is 12.3hh and gets 1 scoop am & pm. I found it worked almost streight away. It is very strong stuff you can't use it on stallions intended for breeding that season. I would maybe give global herbs a ring to see if you have your boy on the correct dose and weather you can mix the two suplements.
Hope you find something that works for your boy.

Thanks LauraW, yes I'll give them a ring and find out whats in it and let them know whats in the ther GL Tranquil and see if its safe to combine the two.

Watch this space :D

Global herbs are usually very helpful when I call them.

Have you tried a large serving of brewers yeast? Have heard that is quite good for amourous geldings and is really cheap. Also good for sweetitch if he is prone.

No I have never tried that actually, seems that brewers yeast has a lot of benefits for all kinds of things, hmmm I could give it a whirl.

Thanks CBAngle

I was also going to suggest brewer's yeast in his feed. The yeast acts as an oxygen scavenger in the gut, meaning that the aerobic bacteria (the nasties, associated with stress and gut disorders) cannot thrive. These bacteria are known to be involved in signalling to the nerves of the intestine, so lowering their numbers can lower anxiety. It affects sweet itch in a slightly different way, but I'm seeing good results on that score (my mare rubs to make open wounds, but she's just had a couple of normal itchy horse scratches so far this year).
