Yesterday he got turnout for the first time since November (not related to his injury but previous yard policy). Before I put him out he was like a ticking time bomb on back legs. I had visions of taking it all slowly slowly catchy monkey but he way he was going on that was never going to work. I was concerned he was going to walk out stiff as a board or hopping lame this AM but all fine.

Popped back up in the eve and he was a different horse - super chilled and happily plodding around the yard in the rain and dark. He got about a hour's in hand walking/grazing this AM (plus a much needed hair cut!) and was a lamb. Today's the first time I've seen him in the proper light of day and I REALLY like him, even as a scruff bag. He's 476kgs and bang on 16.2.

His fronts desperately need TCL and for now he'll have a couple of months just being a horse and finding his feet with 'normal' life, and all being well will start rebacking him come spring.

If he stays sound, and it looks like he should, he's an absolute find. What a smart, solid TB with a lovely face. I really envy you that one.

I couldn't be more impressed with how quickly he's settled down. I've been doing ground work for 15 mins every morning and eve (really simple stuff like teaching him to stand at the block, moving away from pressure etc.) and he's SO smart and willing to please. Does lots of licking and chewing.

I've also had his shoes taken off today. I wince looking at his heels but hope they'll come good with time and a different management style.

I got on him last night and walked around the yard. Bareback, in a headcollar, in the dark, on my own... and he didn't bat an eye. It's not something I'll do regularly as there's not much point until I think he's built up enough for proper work but I just wanted to see if he was going to launch me into Orbit or not. I've spent the last couple of weeks doing in hand rehab type work and teaching him to stand at the block, and just now asking for a bit of trot on the lunge. He drags the toe of the bad hip and he might always do that but I'm hoping he'll only get stronger with time and work.

I try to do something different with him every day - tarp/spooky stuff desensitisation, walking him in/around spooky places, lunge work etc.

I clipped him out and he's looking like a different horse. He's so smart and loving and I have to pinch myself that he's mine! He's holding his foot up because on arrival he was giving me real issues letting me pick his feet out, so now he knows foot up = treat!

Just a few boring updates. He's settled so so well at our new (and final) yard. He's a dope on a rope now and just such a nice, easy horse. He goes out 7/8 hours a day in a herd of 4 and it's genuinely transformed his behaviour compared to at the previous yard. I've been riding him bareback which is kind of ridiculous until I get a saddle sorted (hopefully in the next month) and then I'll start hacking him. He's still just doing walk with tiny bits of trot and won't do much more that that for the next 6 months or so.

We're up and running! On Sunday we had our first hack and tonight we had our first trot in the school, and aside from a spook which lead to a buck, it was totally uneventful and it felt lovely. I was worried I wouldn't like the feel of him which is the punt of buying in these circs but he felt lovely and floaty. I'm chuffed to bits with everything about him. He is just the sweetest horse.

Diagnosed with PSD today, boo! He'd been NQR for about a week so had the vet this morning for scans and X rays.

Worse on right hind but moderate in both. We did a full work up and he's 1/5th on both legs.

On the plus side, I asked for some neck and back X rays while she had the machine out and everything was fine (he has two touching just behind the saddle but vet wasn't concerned with these for now).

She also injected the SI while she was there.

I'm to keep him ticking over for a month for his SI and then he'll most likely go in for surgery.

(I'm aware he's skinny - I literally can't get any more fats into him at the mo!) Screenshot_20220324-200222_Gallery.jpg
