Does anyone know where I can get a Jack Russell bitch puppy in Yorkshire that isn't silly money? All dogs, even cross breeds at the moment, seem to cost an arm and a leg! I have no problem giving a dog everything it needs but refuse to pay 100's of pounds for one.

well said, people who pay lots often encourage breeders to have more litters as an income, dont see why pups need to be £300+ only greedy breeders, last yearbought a very well bred border collie bitch pup, dad reserve welsh sheepdog champ less than £250 and she will be a working sheepdog as well as a pet.

Well bred and brought up dogs are expensive because of the amount of time, money and energy the breeders have had to put into them. Nowt wrong with that, same goes for well bred horses.
You can get cheap pups, best way of finding them is word of mouth, maybe a local farmer will have an unplanned litter etc. But TBH I always think you get what you pay for ;)

friend of mine paid more than i did for a collie that at 18 mths has hip problems and £750+ for an aussie sheepdog as a pet because of all health checks, but with working dogs and alldogs check parents and if they are healthy should pass it on tooffspring without paying for expensive vet checks.

Kitsune, I have looked at rescue centres but they don't have many Jacks in and haven't seen any pups. They all seem to be staffie crosses. I can manage about £150. There is the cost of bed, bowls, insurance etc. and I would be taking any pup to training classes for socialisation.
I will try farmers mags. Hadn't thought of them.

Have you looked on epupz? Just be careful and ask the right sorts of questions because I know a lot of people on there are dodgy breeders.

Echo the above, time and care are reflected in price. Although someone has put that someone asking more money will have more litters has a point, at the same time those selling for low prices for a "quick sale" are equally encouraged to gain "quick money".

I like to think that if someone is prepared to spend £250 for one of my Jack Russell puppies than they're more prepared to look after said puppy properly and permanently - though I appreciate that it's not always the case.

I dont pay silly money but do have 10 dogs 14 yrs to 1 yr, and they are all healthy, having that amount the are fed dried food eggs and a small amount of tinned meat, not insured but find vets bills when required live on our farm majority in kennel and runs and the healty working live keeps them fit.

When you know how much goes into raising quality puppies with health tested parents with qualifications you know its not silly money. Well done for you for buying cheap untested puppies and adding to the BYB, Puppy mill situation.

i dont add anymore than anyone else who buys a pup are you telling me that all £500 plus pups are A1 fit and that will live to a fitter older age than a lesser priced dog, dogs dont understand whether they are dear or not.

A more expensive dog is likely to prompt more research by the buyer, better research usually results in better quality pets, who have better relevant health scores for that breed. Better health scores are more likely to result in a longer living healthy dog, than not. As I have said in previous posts, buying a dog is an investment for life, you buy a cheap badly bred horse - you expect repercussions, same with a cheap badly bred dog.

Understand this though, I have two JRTs, who cost me £200ea. Not the earth by any persons reckonning BUT thats what a mongrel is worth, the same as thats what a badly bred pedigree dog is worth (perhaps less if its going to wind up with hereditary diseases down the line)

BYB (nice abbreviation KLH!!) only provide one service and thats the one that rescues mop up from day after day. Yes, YOU might get one good pup from that litter, the rest are abandonned to rescues, with blindness, hernias, deafness, overshot/undershot jaws, deformities.

You only have to look at a rescue site to know thats the case.
