Jack Russells?

My family went out today (without me) and have selected a jack russell as the new family dog. I'm a little bit upset as I wasn't included in the decision, they've named him and everything without me and I just feel like they have replaced my dog...with a dog I know nothing about!
I'm expected to walk him and take care of him and do the training but feel a bit meh. I may have picked him out but I might not have done and feels like my choice has been made me for me and now I feel like a stroppy teenager.


So what are JRT's like? I'd better get used to the thing now.
 
I have four and they're super little dogs :D Can be a bit challenging to train sometimes as they have a lot of willpower but they're smashing characters and I wouldn't be without mine.

It's important to socialise them with everything especially other dogs as they can be a little sharp. Three of mine are good with other dogs, the old girl is a grouch. They're all great with horses and most importantly kids. They're very energetic and intelligent, I do agility with two of mine and toying with flyball for the youngest.

I guess its just the shock. Miss my Scoobs today and its only been 2 weeks since I lost him and having him replaced by a new little one that I didn't even know existed has blown my mind. I think.

He is a JRT x some sort of other terrier. He looks like a jack russell...but hairier!

Must remember this short little thing exists and not step on him...although by the sounds of it he would let me know hes there....
 
I have 2. There great little dogs massive personality.
Best word of adice i can give you is. Do not give them and inch as the will take 5 miles!!:D
Im quite strict will mine and they prefer it that way. Dont get me wrong i love them to bits and they sleep on the beds and come for cuddles on the sofa!!:D;)
But they are working dogs and like to know what they can and cant do. They often like to have a job. Mine love to jump, very good at horse and hound classes. Which keeps the daughter happy!!:D
 
We got the first of our 2 JRT's only a short while after losing our previous dog. There is no way we could ever have replaced him but we had so much love to give another dog and so missed having a dog around. They are great dogs and very cheeky characters. I always think of them as big dogs in a little body. My son says ours have 'little man syndrome'!! :D
You won't be able to resist. How about a picture and what is the new addition called? :)
 
I replied to your post asking about staffies .... But I also have a jack russell. Great little dogs, lots of energy but can be cheeky! Like others have said, they don't realise they are small dogs. Ours puts the staffie in his place and even the dobie won't mess with him. I love their larger than life characters. I think they are very clever little dogs and out of all our dogs he is the most devious :)
 
I never thought I'd have a little dog, and they don't come much smaller then my JRT Millie, like CC says, don't treat them like a small dog! Lay down the ground rules from day one... And have fun! They ooze cute factor:

I must admit, all of yours are very very cute. I was trying to see if he was on the website but he isn't. He was called Bruno but the family want to call him Kasper, which I don't like. I like Arnold!

So rules so far:
Treat him like a big dog
Don't let him get away with anything
Lay down the ground rules.


Are they any activites they are good at generally? I know they are used for ratting but I'm not sure how i would even think about going with that, so fun agility, doggy dancing? obedience classes? That kind of thing?

I'm hoping I can get a staff to join the family at some point.
 
I would defo try dog agiltiy i keep meaning to with mine its just finding the time. What with been a single mum who works full time and has pony for my daughter and her competing it just hasnt happened yet!! Both take part in the local showjumping horse and hound classes. One usually goes round with daughters round and theres always another kiddie wanting to do a class so i usually go round with the other dog for somebody!!
Ive got a great pic of the younger one jumping. I will dig it out now and post on here for you!!:)
 
We have 2.A 7yr old called Molly and 11 month old called Ani. Both fabulous dogs. Loving affectionate,bright and think they are big dogs in little bodies.
Older one has done agility which she adored and i took the baby terrier racing at a horse show last year and she was faster than everything.
They love to be busy but having had them after previously having big dogs we wont have anything else.
 
:confused:Jrts are fabulous little dogs full of character, as others have said they are definitely big dogs stuck in a small dog's body! From my experience they are all individuals and it's hard to generalise with them.

I grew up with lab and lab xs and so was unused to little dogs when I met my OH who's family had a jrt. She was quite grumpy until you got to know her but then was fine. His brother and SIL also had one who was an absolute nightmare, he had to be shut away if anyone came to the house and bit their kids etc - in short the sort of dog that gives terriers a bad name.

Shortly after getting married OH and I got our first jrt, Henry. He was quite a fiesty wee character, full of life and always had to have the last word. He was fiercely loyal and would defend his people or property. One day he was at work with my OH when he was chased by a ridgeback, he ran back to OH's vehicle apparently terrified but once back turned ready to take on the ridgeback if it dared come near his property - fortunately OH was there ready to intervene.

Next we got Harry, a very big jrt who was the easiest, softest dog imagineable. You could do anything with him and he wouldn't object, his only short coming was his selective deafness to recall on some occasions. We sadly lost him last summer and he left a huge gap in our lives.

Next to arrive was one of our current two, Harvey, pictured in my avatar (you may have realised there is an H theme with their names!). He's a very wary, nervous wee boy possibly because he had been to 2 homes before we got him. Although he gets on with all the family he's very much my dog and likes to stay close whenever possible and gets very jealous if another dog approaches when he's sitting beside me or on my lap.

Last but certainly not least is Hector - some may argue he's not a true jrt as he's black and tan but he definitely is a jrt in all other ways. He's a larger than life character and keeps us constantly amused with his antics. He's such an affectionate and happy boy you can't help but smile at him all the time.

Definitely great at agility, one of the best smalls to have alongside Border Terriers, Fells, Patterdales and Poodles.

Mouse was coming back with rosettes at KC and UKA shows most weekends when we were competing

Many are great at agility - Mine is rubbish as doesn't like tunnels!:confused:

Best breed in the world by far but they do all suffer from the same congenital condition which in the most is incurable :-( ITD (intermittent terrier deafness!)

Despite that they are the most loyal and loving little things and extremely intelligent.

We are just watching 'Pearl Harbor' at the moment and my OH just commented that the Jack Russell survived! It had to - there would have been too many complaints if it hadn't lol ;-)

:D She does that whenever you put one of her rosettes next to her, makes me laugh, but then she's always thought she's the bees knees (and I'm sometimes inclined to agree with her :p ) I've got one of her whilst we're in the queue for a run, I'm holding her and she looks dead snotty like she thinks the rest of the queue is beneath her. She's a character
 
Thank you all for your help, all of them are very cute :)
Will look into the agility classes and flyball and see what is around, I'm in loughborough and I know a few places in coalville do it.

Go and start preparing for the new arrival I guess. And final home check to make sure the garden is secure.
 
I got a Jrt for christmas from my partner, I like to also choose my animals as I always end up with someones cast offs, both my horses were my sisters although they are lovely, I know how you feel not having the choice but my dog is gorgeous and I wouldnt be without her now agree with being quite strict with them they can be terrors, you will love him within a few days and forget about being left out I promise.
 
They are wonderful dogs. I was a 'big dog' person, having always had them, but stayed with a family with a JRT and was hooked. Now have 4, wouldn't be without 1 or 2 at least. Fabulous little characters, very smart, very devoted.
I'd think of him as a present that was picked for you by your family. Lucky you!

btw, LOVE the pics of the jumping russells. Mine are far too smart and scuttle under things instead!
