PLease Help me......
I trashed my husbands Landrover Discovery a few weeks ago and ended up having to be cut out of it :( so needless to say it was written off :(
He replaced it with a Jaguar X-Type 3.0l 4wd.

It doesnt have a tow bar as yet....... I was wondering if any one has any experience towing with a Jag or similar style car? Was it effective or did it bottom out like many people have suggested it would? It will be towing a Ifor 510 old style with 13.2 pony and possibly 15.2 QH x aarb.

Its gonna cost over £500 to have to the tow bar fitted so I dont want to wast money if it isnt going to be up to the job?

PLEASE HELP! I have searched the web and cant find any towing onfo in the jag other than its weight limits / capabilities etc x

I would imagine that it'll bottom out, cost a s***load in fuel and probably be illegal as the trailer and two ponies will weigh more than the car but ROG will tell you that x

Okay i think the x type tows 1500kg (from memory when i was looking at towing cars) if you have an ifor 510 that is about 1000kg so you have 500kg left for 1 pony or horse not 2.
I used to tow with a merc c180 and that towed 1 horse absolutely fine.

So as long as I only tow the 13.2 and stay on flat roads with no bumps id be ok! :(

Best I start looking for a cheap freelander or similar? Any suggestions? I want something that is girly to drive with out the box - but has ebough poke and ground clearance and weight allowance to tow 2 in the ifor?

best bet is another discovery or simalar if you want to pull two horses, Bigger is safer and prices start at £1500 for a old but practical tow car..

Well no you are totally fine to tow one horse with your current set up without issue just not 2.

Be careful with the cheap freelanders there are certain age models that have issues with the head gaskets.

Oh thanks thats good to know :)

Please please please check your towing weights thoroughly.. any vehicle can tow to a degree..its the stopping in control in an emergency thats the issue.

Freelanders are way too small and illegal to tow a 510. A disco makes far more sense.

Turns my stomach at events/shows when i see folk with trailers being towed by cars/small 4x4s.

IMHO i think there should be a campaign by the government to educate people on what is legal and safe.

Yes - I wouldnt dream of towing over the allowed weight - my husband is very clued up on legal side of towing weights - I was only asking re the Jag bottoming out - as I dint want to ruin another car! the Jag can legally tow the set up (one horse and 500) but i dont want to ruin the car!

If and when i decide to buy a 4x4 i shall look into the weight combos before purchasing. I also am shocked to see what people pull 16hh in ! heavens forbid if they need to stop in a hurry! :(

Thanks for the advice xxx

I've towed my Rice Beaufort (around 900kg) and one horse with a front-wheel drive, 2l, large hatchback. Max towing weight 1800kg. Never bottomed out or had any braking or stability problems. Would be much better if it were an auto though! Slow speed manoeuvring killed the clutch. :(

Try Looking for a jeep but pref with LPG. I love mine and it is uber reliable but costs a lot in petrol. It has a 3.7 engine though so plenty of power to tow 2 big horses.

If you do go with a tow bar on the jag, is I would look at quotes from tow bar specialists. While I had mine fitted some 5 years ago, it was half the price that Jeep quoted. I originally looked elsewhere as logically, could not see that a removable tow bar would be as secure as a fixed one!

We have been towing with a 2.5 X-type Jag for the last three years or more with no problems at all. The trailer is a 1 1/2 Hotra so not heavy, about 750kg, and one horse only (a 17.2hh trakehner weight about 600kg max).
You don't see that many jags here, especially not towing a matching black trailer lol

my OH brought one of these- lovely car but oh my god it ended up in the scrap heap. six months after we had it the clutch went at 60,000 mil,es and then we had this replaced at 2k cost and then the 4wd part went as the clutch had messed it up and apparently the 4wd is not as good as it sounds and it is actually more of an all wheel drive.

THIS IS MORE LIKE WHAT I WANT TO HEAR! :)

Did you upgrade the rear suspension???

My other half has an x types 30litre v6.

Id say yes powerful enough to tow. Obviously be careful on the weight.
Would want to go off roast
He doesn't like to get it dirty!
Imagination how dirty it could get towing and off road!
