Joint supplement for older dogs

My YO has asked me to recommend a joint supplement for her dog. She has a 14yr old retreiver who is starting to feel her age.

I've never used a joint supp on a dog before so have no idea what to suggest. I have the "hyperdrug" catalogue and have folded down the two pages for products for her but could anyone recommend any that they have personally used?

We discovered that at 1 yr old my lab has double hip DP. Vet told me he was born a cripple and to take him home and give him the best life!
About six months ago he was hopping on 3 legs and struggled in the morning after a walk - didnt think he would cope with being off his lead again (not easy with a puppy)
Vet suggested I try horse joint supplement, as I was crushing tablets from Boots, and nothing worked. I have spoken to 3 vets, and gluc occurs naturally in the body, and what they dont need they 'pee' out. I have used Equine America powder for about 5 months, and the difference is amazing. He has levels depending on exercise.
Vets told me that there is no scientific evidence supplements work, but animals cant lie, and the difference is amazing.
I have tried homeopathy and different things but this has worked. He also has a magnetic collar on.
There are lots of different ones out there, if it works, I feel you will notice the improvement.
 
Pop along to the vets and they can give you seraquin for dogs which is just the best stuff or if its really bad they can start the dog on metacam!

Seraquin is a non pharmacuetical supplement and my dog has been on it, with much success, for years. It's not cheap but if insured with petplan and prescribed by the vet it is claimable.

If severe then at 14 the vet may well be happy to set the dog on a course of metacam. Metacam can have long term side effects but at this age the vet would possibly weigh it up against the short term relief.

It's the YO's dog so she was just looking for advice. She's been to the vet and the dog has been x-rayed. The vet said she didn't need put on medication but thought a joint supplement would be a good addition; they didn't recommend one though.

The YO is currently giving the dog glucosamine tablets. I suggested cod liver oil as that is what we've used previously on our working dogs. I've also fed selenium and green lip mussel tablets to a horse; would these benefit a dog too?

I've given her the hyperdrug catalogue which has a couple of pages of supplements too.

I don't think the dog is insured. I don't think money would be an issue if she required medication but the vet doesn't appear to think that she is at that stage.

I have a customer who had a lot of success with green lipped mussel tabs for her elderly Golden Retriever so worth a try..
 
Devils Claw has helped our old dog. I went into Holland and Barrats and bought the capsules. They told me there to give him 2 per day. You open the capsule and put the powder in their feed. I think it makes a difference. He also gets chondritin and cod liver oil.
 
Can I just say that although Devils Claw does work - it's just masking the pain and in the long run could make the problem worse - like putting a horse on bute and working it.

My lab with joints problems has a regular course of cartrophen injections which help and I also give him a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement in the form of capsules that I empty out into his dinner. They are bought online from Goldshield (designed for humans) but far cheaper than buying the pet equivalent.
