Joint Supps - The Good, The Bad, and the Financially Crippling!

Hi M

I have now ordered the Riaflex and am going to try it first on R and then on D. Cant hurt I suppose.

I tried pernamax for 2 months and there was no difference whatsover. It is from New Zealand and there is a lower incidence of arthritis there, so they narrowed it down to the local diet which included Green Lipped mussels. However, I think for it to be truly effective it needs to be fed before the onset of arthritis. My two hated the taste and I had to crush 8 tablets a day for them (maximum dose) for 2 months and no difference at all. I think people who have found pernamax to be effective have also found the H&B version to be just as effective so would def try that first.

I am a bit torn at the moment between the Riaflex Complete and the ArthiAid - we will see!

I popped down the field yesterday lunchtime and put Tills' magnetic brushing boots on, and she wore her magnetic stable wraps to bed

I tried Cortaflex once on a pony who was getting a bit stiff - did bugger all.

I now use NAF Superflex and love it. 2 of my veteran ponies have never looked better (one has mild athritis) and it somehow solved my younger horses cold back (no idea how).

I started on Aviform Suppleaze gold last Wednesday, have tried loads of joint supps & hardly any make a differance despite having used expensive ones.
So far suppleaze is making slight differances, all the horses seem quite free. My Tb who's on 1 Danilon a day has got a bit much the last couple of days so ive dropped him down to 1/2 a danilon sachet. Could be the weather.

Im on the loading dose atm so will see after a month if it really is doing something.

ETA - I tried to try Equistro Flexadin after being told that it was very good, but no-one told me it had a strong smell of Vanilla, none of my horses would eat it. I had to give it away in the end.

What would be really helpful is a spreadsheet on all the different joint supplements listing ingredients and amount in each dose.

I have always used superflex as it seems to make mine less stiff, but has nowhere near the recommended amount of MSM and Glucosamine. So going to try Riaflex complete which does have the recommended amount and see if it does actually make any difference.

tbh I would start with the cheapest one, use it for a few months and if its not working move onto the next.

Unless you have a definite diagnosis of the problem there is no way you can make a difinitive choice about a supplement as what works for muscles doesnt work for tendons and bone or arthritic changes or 101 other things that may be the problem with your horse.

As its usually seriously frustrating to get to the truth about what the actual problem is via the vet route it makes sense to start at the cheap end of the supplement market.

IME Ive found Cortavet to be very good with arthritic/boney things but for general muscle, tendon type stiffness or bruising from concussion its useless because of the ingredients being so specific.

Extraflex HA did nothing for my boy, whereas Cortaflex made a huge difference.
It all depends on your horse, something that works really well for someone else could do nothing for you.

I'm also in same position with my 21 year old and have actually just posted on forum as now looking for a new supplement.

I currently use Cortavet, Pernamax & Cider Vinegar.

He wears the Equilibrium stable wraps at night which have worked wonders with leg swelling and don't make his legs too hot.

I was recommended Back on Track boots which are infused with a ceramic powder which reflects the horse's body heat back into the joint thus alleviating pain - but at £33 each (I need two hock boots) it's an expensive option. I am thinking of trying Cosequin or Newmarket Joint Supp.

ive tried superflex seemed ok. but stuck with cortaflex for years, ran out a few months ago and notcied the difference - very clicky now!

was going to reorder cortalfex but seeing as it is pricey going to research some of the things rec' on this post.

Vicki1986 - if you are thikning of re-ordering Cortaflex, have you thought of trying Cortavet? Much stronger (10 times) and you can get it through places like Vet-Medic for around £35-£40 a tub inc del. It lasts me 2 months but if you have a larger horse prob more like a month supply.
