I am still overwhelmed by the support of people on here, so just wanted to give a quick update after yesterday :)

Ellie is not lame, which is fabulous. She's still very sore and her hocks make me wince to look at them - I just relate it to the pain of a badly grazed and skinned elbow!!! But she's happy and bright in herself, not down at all. We have the vet coming tomorrow to check her over, so obviously that will help with the inquiry - thanks to everyone for the good advice.

The police have spoken to the lorry company, and the driver actually rang me today, but seems more intent on trying to wriggle out of it than anything - he actually said to me he thought I had voluntarily dismounted, and that my friend had told him we were both ok, which was why he drove off. Utter nonsense, but I refused to get into a row with him, as I just feel the whole thing is better off left to the police. I will be ringing the legal team from my insurance company tomorrow, to see what they feel I should do next. The lorry company were apparently keen for me to ring them back, but I just feel I ought to speak to the police first.

What a nightmare!!! All I know is that I intend to take this as far as I can, for the sake of every horse rider out there. We need our roads to be made safer, and the only way we can take steps towards doing that is by making sure that those who make it unsafe are brought to justice.

Thanks again to everyone on here - I really mean it. xxx

Firstly glad your mare seems ok. :)
And well done for wanting to take it further and not bowing down to the pressure to let it drop. The driver was in the wrong and it could have easely been far worse. Keep pressing on and let us know what happens.
((((((((hugs)))))))) to you and your mare.

These are her poor leggies today....

How on earth did the driver get your number?:(

Sorry - it was explained in my other thread. On the advice of the police, we rang the lorry company, who immediately said they knew which driver it was. We gave them our phone number (again, the police said this was ok), so they have obviously passed it onto the driver!

I am just so glad you are both ok, and your friend.
I hope the police throw the book at the driver, and you get some sort of come back.

Her hocks look great, as in what you want to see when a horse has gone down on them - very clean and dry and just *missing hair* - perfect and a ton of weight off your shoulders :D

Ahh, right, gottcha :) Just so long as it was civil and you didn't feel pressured or intimidated by the driver :)

Her hocks look waaaaay better than I expected :) My mare had worse grazes on her face a few weeks ago (she got in a pickle backing out of a trailer for her first time). Just keep putting some sudocreme on and they'll be fine in no time. :)

Glad you are both ok and that your mare is recovering well.

As someone who has to ride on a series of roads to get to the nearest off road hacking, I'm with you 100% on pursuing the company. The driver was at fault, but he will have been acting under pressure from the transport manager / company.

Sounds like the police are taking the whole thing seriously which is great. And I'm relieved to hear that Ellie is finally seeing the vet.

I have just caught up with this and want to say how glad I am that nobody was badly hurt in this awful accident.
I am really pleased that you are pursuing it because the driver needs to be made responsible for his appalling action.
I will be interesed to see how this goes. Good luck. :)

Really well done for following this through, you are doing all the right things. Hopefully your insurance company and the police will take it from here, but do make it clear to the police that you want to take this as far as possible and you want this driver made aware of how stupid and dangerous his behaviour was!

I would send a letter to your local council too, notifying them of the accident so that they can consider whether any safety precautions or warnings signs are appropriate at the scene.

Just seen this - and want to offer my support for what you are doing. Best left for the cops to deal with, apart from anything do you need any more hassle, lol. Legs look sore - you were both very, very lucky to get out of that. sm x

Gosh, you did well to keep your cool on the phone with the driver.. I would have had to bite through my tongue... Dismounting voluntarily indeed !! What was Ellie doing then, sitting down to rest !! as for your friends horse clambering up a bank.. thats entirely normal.

Sounds like the police are (at last) taking things like this seriously, and I must say well done you for at least trying to pursue it as far as you can.

Just so very glad you are all ok (despite the scrapes, bumps and bruises) because it could have been a really dreadful outcome.. XX
