Hi guys well firstly she is doing MUCH better!!!!

after last week when i asked for advice, the days following things didnt seem any worse....or any better.

But then just when i thought it was hopeless, i decided.... to do what alot of you said and cut out the morning meal.

IT WORKED! its so strange how just that small meal made all the differance to her behaviour! she is brilliant now! she takes her bit alot easier * still trys it on a little* lol but i do manage to get it in fairly easy without a fight.

she now also LOVES to go out to grass all day long! which... has cut down on mucking out for me during the day!

and the most important thing....i can now mount her... although she does try to walk off a little LOL.... least i can get on her and ride her.

she deffo needs some schooling but she is the perfect horse for me now. she is really really affectionate and 2 nights ago she was lay down in her stable licking my knee to death!!!!! LOL it was hilarious , for about half an hour..

Oh also, she stands perfectly still nowso i can spray her down with the fly repellant! lol smart horse knows that when i do this, the midges will stop buggin her out!

god loads to tell ya... Jordan and daphi

( p,s i changed the spelling of her name cos i felt mean thinking actually changing her name so i think daphi sounds better than daffy LOL what do ya think?

Good news!!! Glad that you are making really good progress with Daphi

Sounds like she's getting better every day! It is amazing, but feed does play a bit part in the horse's behaviour!

Daffi, Daphi...don't know. It's your horse and your choice, so, if you want to change her name, or the spelling, just do it!

Thanks f_s!

yeah i prefer the way its spelt ( daphi) LOL makes it sound less goofy LOL.... ahhh i dont know LOL...hmm

Oh Also...

i fell off today for the first time! *yikes* i was doing some transitsion work? going from walk to a trot ... when she wanted to break into a canter... i lost my balance and tried to pull her back. she threw on the anchors and i was thrown over! LOL

Oops! Hope you are ok!

You'll have to post some video of you riding her now!!! We'll all want to see!! Keep up the good work

oh god no!!!!!!! lol

Anyway im here to annoy everyone again i have questions! LOL

Okay firstly remember how basic i am so bear with me and my descriptons of certain things.

when i ride her, she has the basics im sure. like, she stops and starts and steers all well, i squeeze her on and off she goes. i gentley pull back and she stops. i give her nice loud clear commands too... so i,ll squeeze her on and tell her to walk on... and she does.... then i,ll give her an extra squeeze on and go into trot, i quickly get into rising cos i dont feel confidant enough yet to do anything in sitting trot... besides it hurts! LOL
im riding her around the top feild at the moment cos im a little unsure of her out on the road. However i do walk her daily along the main road ( on the path) and she is fine... she doesnt seem to fussed about cars ( with loud exhuasts and music blurring etc) she isnt even scared of stupid dogs barking at her in gardens! she just walks on....

anyway going off the subject lol... its her steering i think she needs work on! I, steer her to the left or right she does go but she just doesnt seem to go enough the way i want her to go....she cuts corners etc. what would be the best way around this? if that made any sence sorry lol

Glad you are getting on well with her.

To stop her cutting corners you need to use the leg on the inside of the corner to push her back out to where you want to go. Also if you can try and use your outside rein to keep her going around the corner where you want.

If I was you I would be really tempted to have a riding lesson. An instructor would come to your house and they would be able to give you some good advice as to how to ride Daphi.

Good Luck.

Oh i didnt know they did that! ( come to the house) thats handy! how would i go about finding one of those? they arent the riding schools are they? I assume its a private horse schooling instructer? sorry i sound dumb lol

I second the riding instructor suggestion. Are you on a livery yard? Someone there may be able to recommend an instructor they use, which might be best. Otherwise there should be a list on the BHS website i think ( i don't use it much but it's worth a look).

Steering is generally more complicated than just using your reins, you need to use your legs too. An instructor would definitely be the best person to show you. I'm sure someone on here could explain it to you in more detail, but i'm not so good at explaining, sorry!

This is fab news

very happy for you.

I'm not sure what bit she's in at the moment, but when it comes to steering a fulmer snaffle may really help you out?
something like this?

What bit's she in at the moment? You'd need to measure your current bit to check appropriate size by measuring it between the bitrings before ordering.

Also, I'd put a neck strap on her so you have something to hold onto if you feel a bit unbalanced

Good luck, love the new spelling & keep us updated.

Really glad you stuck with her, I didn't respond before but followed the thread and watched your vid and thought she looked lovely and relaxed.

I agree with the riding instructor suggestion, it will give you confidence as well as show you how to school her properly. I've had my horse for about 4 months and have had lesson on average once a fortnight, and went from someone who always had butterflies in her tummy worrying about riding (confidence issues!), to jumping 3ft last week. Plus I have learnt so much about leg yields, riding into contact etc, all stuff that is important basics but stuff you forget when you've been a happy hacker for several years.

Good luck and get those lessons sorted!

I have also been reading your posts with interest and this is the first one that I have actually replied to.
Congratulations on your lovely horse by the way.

I would definatly think of getting an instructor to come to you. You can look on the BHS website or you could ask your local saddler if she can reccomend one. I can heartily reccomend this as I am having lessons again with my youngster and so far the first 4 have made a tremedous difference.

Jordan you are looking for a 'freelance instuctor' I think this is a really god idea as they will be able to give you much more specific advice than is possible on here.

Have you considered joining a riding club? You can find some in your area from here
http://www.bhs.org.uk/content/Brc-Home.asp?id=1625&pg=Find%20an%20Affiliated%20Club

they will probably have a long list of freelance instructors that they use so can probably put you in touch with someone. Many clubs have active social events and this would probably be an ideal way for you to get in touch with some more local horsey advice you could probably go and watch lessons they have etc (you can learn a lot by watching!) and generally make some horsey friends.

Our club, although we run lots of competitions is very much a social thing and not particularly competitive and we encourage all to have a go within their abilities. We run lots of bowling nights/quizes/bbqs etc And if you were up for helping at the occasional event you would def be very very welcome in most clubs!!

I would see what clubs are in your area and either have a lookd at their websites to see what they do or ring their secretaries.

I'm another one who has been following your posts but not commented before, you certainly made an entrance!

Really glad to hear the two of you are getting on well, and I agree that getting an instructor would help you both. Good luck and keep us posted

Glad to hear things are improving, i would get an instructor to come to your house and give a lesson infield

Hi guys also i am gonna look on the bhs web site to find a local instructor! I deffinatley think this is needed as how can i school a horse if i dont know how to school! so i,ll find a local one. theres a livery just down the road from me and i keep meaning to go and call in, im sure they would know any local instructors! I feel a bit gawky though.... going onto a yard and asking... im a bit shy that way.

anyways i,ll check out the website and see what that brings up. thanks for your advice guys!

Glad its all going well

Just a tip that I use for tacking up.......

Merlin doesnt open his mouth for the bit either..... a thumb in the side is ignored and he clams up. But, if I have a mint in my hand, under the bit..... he actually looks for the bit and lips it up with the mint!!!!

Just a little reward for having something that is basically a bit uncomfortable
