Had a very close call today....Me and my two friends (S and C) went out for a little hack this evening just round a few fields. Everything was going so well!! did some trotting, then came to a stretch of 3 fields which i usually like to canter/gallop across. We trotted the first field, started cantering on the second field and sped up into a gallop. By the end of the 3rd field theres another field but we usually turn right round a corner. I Kept checking behind to make sure the other two were ok, then i noticed infront of me there was a small muddy patch right on the corner, So i tried to slow lady down as much as i could before i got to it. My plan was to go into the field a bit so the turn wasnt so sharp...but lady just turned anyway, VERY sharply and almost slipped...phew....that was close!!! Better slow down now!! but no....she wanted to keep going. SLOW DOWN LADY!!!! *Spook*
-Leaps sideways mid gallop- aaaaand finally slowed down...
"STOOPPPPP!!!!!!!"
 huh? stop?
Behind me, C was shouting STOP!!!! I turned round to see S on the floor and her horse, Bud, cantering towards me. C jumped off her horse, Sassy, to try and catch Bud, but failed and bud cantered past me and almost knocked me off lady :( (i was stopped on a little steep, narrow bridge/hill)
S was crying, Lady was panicing, i tried to make her go forwards to try and follow bud but she wouldnt budge, no matter how hard i tried :( LUCKILY he stopped in the field infront of me and started eating the grass :)
S and C caught up to me and went and caught bud but lady was still panicing, wouldnt go forwards but was flinging her head everywhere jumping up and sideways spinning in circles then decided to bolt down the hill....how i managed to stay in the saddle i do not know... :/
"OMG What Happened?!?!"
When me and C went round that corner, bud lost sight of us, paniced, sped up, slipped, fell over and landed on S!!(just imagine a bit 17.2hh horse falling on top of you!!) her feet were still in the stirrups but luckily she unclipped it before she was dragged along.... (she was trapped under him so couldnt free her leg)
S walked bud around and he seemed absolutely fine, but S was still crying, i wanted to get off lady to give her a big hug but i knew lady would trample me and probably start rearing (shes never bucked of reared under saddle with me but she will if im holding her and shes panicing) :( so i stayed on as we were only a field away from our field which i felt incredibly guilty about as we left them behind a bit :( and lady was being a panicy prat so i trotted her the rest of the way (about half a field) to get to S's mum to tell her what happened :(

i just feel so guilty because its partly my fault, i went round that corner and bud tried to catch up. AND feel guilty about staying on lady (even though it wouldve been worse for everyone if i had got off) AND feel guilty about trotting to S's mum and leaving them behind....they werent THAT far behind maybe about 100 yards.... when we got to the field i got straight off and gave S and massive hug and almost burst into tears with her but she kept saying it wasnt my fault, just one of those things no one knew was going to happen....

well S is in A&E as im writing this still waiting to see a doctor (almost 2 hours of waiting) she is in alot of pain as bud landed straight on her, winded her so shes finding it hard to walk and breathe from pain in her back, neck and ribs.... :( just hope shes ok !! :(

Sounds scary, but don't feel guilty horses are unpredictable. Sounds like you did the right thing staying on your horse to prevent another accident which would have made things worse. I'm sure your friend will be fine just bruises hopefully and who knows you may even laugh about it in months to come.:)

bloody hell what a situation to be in!!! Dont worry like you said its just one of those things. If Lady was going to be more of a **** if you were off her, then you did the right thing, plus you also went to alert S's mum. Dont worry it happens! Big hugs and hot choccies for the 3 of you

Well, I do hope S is alright. Being squashed by a large horse is not good for one.
I'm sure this is not what you were hoping to hear but yes I'm afraid I do think that you were at least partly to blame. When I am riding with others, I try to ride for them, in other words, take account of their needs and safety, and expect them to do the same for me. I refuse to ride with those who cannot/will not control their speed/warn of hazards/check that I am keeping up with them/ wait for me when necessary. But then I am lucky, I usually ride with my sister and we have responsible friends.
I'm sure that you will have learned this lesson, what a shame it had to be the hard way.

oh, don't feel too guilty! It's one of those things that happens, and when your horse is going some (as they all do) it can be really hard to persuade them to pull up or go somewhere different.

I had a similar fall with Ron this winter. We came over a little fence and the rest of the hunting field were turning left after it. I knew Ron wasn't properly balanced and tried to get him to go straight on for a few strides before turning to get his balance. But he just whipped round to follow everyone else and slipped, unseated me and stood up again. No damage done, but it could so easily have been.

I'm sure your freind will be fine. Broken ribs can be painful, but they mend quite quickly. I'd be surprised if it's much more serious than that. Bruised, sore and fed up maybe, but I'm sure she'll be right as rain in no time.

Have a hug, and a big hot chocolate on me, and one for your freinds too.

These things happen. It's not your fault if Lady got the wind up her tail and took off round the corner with you. Not ideal or pleasant, but these things do happen. Her slipping also probably gave her even more of an inclin to go faster after from scaring herself....not helping you much on the trying to stop her already front!

She got up and was walking after [allbeit a bit sore I'm guessing!] so I wouldn't worry too much. Plus she'd have had to state the injuries/what happened when she got to A&E when they drove there, so it's not life threatening if they're not rushing to see to her.

She'll be fine, horse's are fine, it will be fine.

We all take tumbles.

Sounds scary and it wasnt your fault. You also did the best thing by staying on your horse and not risking looseing her and injuring yourself too. And going off to tell your friends mum was the right thing to do!! I hope she is ok

What a horrid set of events! BUT it was all accidental not on purpose. We have all done daft things/got carted etc. once it had all gone wrong you all did what you could to rescue the situation and all made it home, even if a bit bashed up. Tomorrow is another day :)

oh god you could be waiting all night, when i had a tumble few weeks ago i was in the hospital from 8.30/9 till half 2 in the morning, hadnt had my tea or anything, few bites of a sandwich, brought it back up thanks to the side affects of one of the painkillers, im sure she will be a bit weak tomorrow, but you can see her when shes up, get ya bot in to bed

I agree get yourself into bed and get some sleep!! You need to be strong for your friend, leave your mobile on loud so you will wake up if they ring you. And dont get too worried im sure she will be ok if not a little sore

lol i should...but im looking after C atm shes asleep on my sofa so i just put a blanket over her cuz could be here ages
and her dog is asleep and my feet lol so just sat up with them until everyone gets home...
i would put my phone on loud....but the speaker is broke :p just my luck eh x

Yeah it is past my bedtime but im working nights tomorrow so trying to stay up late then ill sleep all day and not wake up too early. Luckilly my ned is out 24/7 so dont need to be up super early

Good news - chalk it up to experience, yes, maybe it was at least a little bit caused by the way you and your friends were riding but no real harm done and you'll know now for the next time:)

Glad to hear no bones broken. Sounds like a horrible accident all round - we've all been there, trust me! When I was 14 I got seriously b*ll*cked by my trainer on a hack because me and another girl started racing and she fell off. Oops!
Give it a month or two and you will be laughing and saying 'remember when lady and bud tanked off with us??'

But maybe stick to walk for your next few hacks - don't want to give the neddies the idea that they can just blast around whenever they want :)
