I am sure someone up there is conspiring against me this week! I am due to show my mare and foal at the Royal Show on Friday, but everything seems to be falling apart! First my OH has said that he doesn't want to go, which means finding new transport (I have a trailer but nothing to tow it with, and lorry that is in the garage for repair) and someone capable of handling the foal in the ring.

Well, a friend stepped up to help with transport, but now her jeep has broken, so we still have a trailer and no tow vehicle! I have called the horsebox hire people, but no one has one free for this week!

Then I have to find a handler that has all the right kit - I have a volunteer, but she doesn't have the right clothes, and so it would mean kitting her out entirely. Also she has never shown in hand before, and so I am getting very nervous.

Now my mare has thrown a shoe - not a huge disaster I thought.... Until I called my farrier - turns out that he is on holiday and wont be back until Saturday. Do I risk it, travel her without a shoe, and get the farrier at the show to knock it back on, or do I call round local farriers and beg them to come and re-attach it (very small chance they will).

I am starting to wonder whether I should go at all! I have been looking forward to this show all season, but at the moment things just go from bad to worse! I wonder what is going to happen next!

You've still got to go!

My old Grande Cheeroke broke down on me all the time but I was really lucky that the garage lent me a really nice new 4x4 to tow with. Is there any chance your frined could see if a garage would do that - My best horse friend had the same problem (we rarely had one towing car between us which was a nightmare) and a garage let her have one they were trying to sell. I think she had to have a for sale sign on it but would it be worth asking around?

Not sure about the shoe, spose if you phone around and no one can do it then you can still get the farrier at the show to do it. If you do travel her with a naked foot wrap it in a thick layer of cotton wool or similar so that it doesn't chip as she comes down the ramp.

Good luck

What time is your class? Am happy to handle foal for you if you want as long as does not clash with my classes?

PM me

While I appreciate that you want to go to this show I think after all those hiccups I would be inclined to say it's not to be because I am always of the thought that if something else worse did happen then it was my fault for being so stubborn in the first place; if that makes any sense at all!

It's not as if this will be your one and only show of the year; mare and foal have already been out several times (and done remarkably well!) and all foals need a break from the constant travelling. From your area to the Royal is a fair distance especially in a trailer which are never as comfortable as a lorry for them although I know you planned to travel down the day before. Have to say, if it was me, I'd knock it on the head now but I'm a philosophical sort; I've had to be, my hubby has done exactly the same on numerous occasions to me, sometimes just the day or morning before a show so I do know exactly where you're coming from, believe me!

There'll be other shows where you won't have had such bad luck thrown at you all at once; I just look at it as an omen you weren't to go, sorry!

Get yourself there, it might be worth all the hassle in the end and you may do really well, not to mention you may need your 'new handler' in the future again.

Good luck and enjoys yourselves!

Right, had a mad day, but think we have sorted most things. Have found a farrier to put shoe back on before we go. I think we have found a lorry to hire, just waiting for the confirmation. Now just need a foal handler - SSM, one of our classes clashes with your class but have PM'd you with the details. Now I am going to have a nice stiff drink (and wait for the next disaster)!!

Just start thinking positive now! I recently went to a one day event and my car broke down on the way there!! Managed to borrow another 4x4 and arrived and got placed, so it is worth the effort.
