Am just having a bit of moan really and I do know that lots of people are having a tougher time of things but am beginning to get down now......

I broke my wrist on the 3rd January thanks to a particularly massive buck and then had to have 8 weeks off, the first 6 being unable to drive so having to rely on other people for lifts to yard etc. Everyone was fantastic but not being independent really doesn't suit me! Horse is basically put on 2 months holiday, lunged a few times a week, horsewalker everyday and turnout once a week.

Finally begin to get better, can drive and lunge my boy.....and he then goes lame. That was about 4 weeks ago, the only thing I can think that will have caused it will have been when he was mucking about on the lunge when the ground was really hard and uneven. (have posted previous threads about this).

Just over 2 weeks ago when he still wasn't better got the vet out and they put him on 2 sachets of danolin a day and boxrest (we are now on day 16).

When he was on danolin he was walking much better (was allowed to move him out of stable and tye up outside) but now he is off it he is lame again, so it seems that the boxrest hasn't done anything to help and this is really worrying me. The vet is due to come out again on Monday, and depending on what she says, he will go to horsey hospital for a full workup.

I am so worried about him and so disappointed.......before I broke my wrist we were both beginning to make real progress together - had started hunting, was working in an outline (big achievement), jumping was improving, and this was meant to be the year when we started to go out to local shows together.

I know that compared to what some people do this doesn't sound much but it had taken a while to get our partnership to this stage, and I guess I am just feeling so sad :( :( :(

Sorry for the moan and biccies for all those who got to the end......:)

Sorry you're having such a crap time. Hopefully it's just a blip and your boy comes sound very soon.

One silver lining though, it's better for the rubbish to happen now and be all healed for the lovely spring and summer riding.

you poor thing, lots of sympathy to you...
You've had a tough time, it's understandable that you feel down. Having an injury and being off is always depressing!! it's also depressing when the horse goes lame..sounds like it's all happening at once. The good thing is, it can only get better! Spring is coming, your horse will recover, your wrist will recover and probably by April you'll both be back into it, and moving forward again. It's just a small blip. Don't worry! Treat yourself to something nice - they always say to treat yourself as your best friend would treat you - lots of positive thinking, get a manicure (if you're not in a cast!), go cuddle and groom your horse and build the relationship on the ground - I'm sure he can be walked out in hand right? You can do all sorts of stuff on the ground in walk - backing up, teaching lateral work, responsiveness to your voice aides - stop, go etc...can you walk him out in hand (in a bridle for control) to a nice field, to let him munch on some juicy grass? that's always a nice thing to do, but not easy to find time for when you're riding regularly...

Be nice to yourself, it's a blip, you will get through it! Big hugs :)

I know how you feel. I had surgery at the start of February, had complications and infections, had to go back in hospital. I am now waiting to see if the anti-bs I finished yesterday have got rid of the infection or it will be back to hospital again.

It now looks like it will be another 3 - 4 weeks before I can drive (I have to wait until the wound heals) and 6 weeks before I can start doing some very slow riding. I too hate having to have my hubbie drive me everywhere.

I hope your horse is ok and that life picks up for you.

A few questions:

How old is your horse? What is his weight like? Which leg is he lame on? Has the vet done a full lameness workout to try to ascertain where the problem is? Do you know if it's foot or higher up? I would want some further investigations if he is still lame after two weeks, such as nerve blocks etc.

I know exactly how you feel!! I broke my finger badly last year, had to have 2 operations and wasn't allowed to drive for 3 months. It was hell!! And at the time I had 2 horses both stabled!!

Was gutted as had just broke my youngster so needed to restart him once I could ride again.

Then he chucked me off and I broke 3 ribs so more time out!!!

Rebroke him AGAIN then sold him so i could concentrate on my older mare and since sept she has been backwards and forwards to the vets for ongoing investigations and treatment!!!

It is tough and it's totally gutting but it really does make you appreciate things when they start goin right

Vicki I am very sorry to see this, and what you say is so correct, makes me look like a real whinger.

I hope the pain fades and the memories stay and that your life recovers as much as it can to normal.

Sorry i didn't put it on to belittle anyone.

I suppose what im saying is, chin up - someone out there has ALWAYS got it worse than you.

I did not take it that way, ok I have had a rough time, but I have not lost a loved one (apart from my cat of 24 years) this year.

What you have gone through is far worse than a bit of illness and as you say, puts life into perspective.

He is 17, 18 in May and his weight before he was on boxrest was (if I do say so myself) perfect. He is lame on front left and there is no heat or swelling - the vet examined by hands and did flexion tests when they first came out. I agree that further investigation is needed including xrays and nerve blocks, and this is why he is booked into the horsey hospital. The vet will only do the two lower nerve blocks at the yard.

Can you check the hollows above his eyes? Are they hollow or puffy/filled in?

it didn't read as though you were belittling anyone, but you are right, there is always someone who has it worse, and it is important to keep everything in perspective!:)

Sorry to hear about your loss though :(

I haven't look closely recently but as far as I can recall they are hollow, but will check again tonight.

I hadn't noticed that my 17 year old mare's had filled in. She became slightly lame on one of her forelegs. I had the vet, no swellings etc, so box rest danilon but no better after 2 weeks. By this time I had decided it was an abscess even though she was not hopping lame, so I poulticed for five days, still nothing.I decided it must be laminitis even though she was not fat nor had she had lami in the past. When the vet came out he confirmed it was lami. I changed her diet from halage to soaked hay and put her on a diet (as she needed to be on the thin side of good to avoid the possibility of her pedal bone rotating). Vet also prescribed sedalin (to improve blood supply to the laminae) Within 3 days she was sound but had to stay on box rest for two further weeks. She tested positive for cushings and insulin resistance, hence the lami. She had no other symptoms other than her eye hollows had filled in - so slowly, I had never noticed! Anyway, just a thought, as if it is the same for your boy, it would save him going through all the needles! Let us know how you get on.
