Just why?

Why, why, WHY did I read this thread? 🤢🤮

I was aware that some dogs ate dog faeces, but have never met one that does, and had no idea some like it so 'fresh'. 🤢

All the dog's I've had have shown some interest in dried horse muck, and some were interested in rabbit or deer droppings, and one of my mum's dogs would go after the cat variety unless stopped, but that's as bad as I've had to live with.

I have only had one dog who rolled in faeces, once a fresh cowpat, but usually fox poo. The most bizarre/hilarious thing was that she'd roll in it like a thing possessed, doing a really good job at grinding it into her coat, but once she'd got up she'd look absolutely disgusted with the smell and almost surprised that that was the result of her actions (for the 100th time). She would have a truly horrified expression on her face for the entire walk home, and it wouldn't stop until she'd been washed off 🤣.

Good luck Clodagh, and you have my sympathies (in between gagging). I hope that the muzzle results in a speedily-reformed Red, but I don't think I'll be re-visiting this thread to find out 😂
I’ve heard of it but never had a dog that did it before. Tbh I can’t tell you how much it revolts me. I won’t even touch her on a walk and if she comes and mouths my hand…. 🤢. This thread telling me it’s common is just amazing! And not in a good way.

Ok, I have come back to this revolting thread.

I am totally with you Clodagh, I think it is a really repulsive habit and wouldn't want the dog anywhere near me. I have always hated seeing someone let their dog lick their face- or even worse their MOUTH  - but after reading this thread I think I might actually throw up a little bit next time I see it happen. I am not a germ-phobe but surely it is just self-preservation not to allow a dog's mouth near yours (especially now we know what might have been in the dogs mouth shortly before...) 🤢

Those who aren’t very doggy might not know that bitches will clean up their puppies, not only licking them after a wee but also eating their poo. We have puppies at the moment, they are four weeks and the bitch will still eat their poo up. This particular bitch is a poo eater, fresh or cold she doesn’t care, we haven’t had her from a pup and haven’t been able to break her habit and I suspect we never will, it is totally gross and as Clodagh I feel quite repelled by it.

Clodagh I would let her out first and alone at night, then once she’s back in let the others out, bloomin’ nuisance though.

At night she is now in a lead as the dark enables her to be much worse. During the day she is on a lead until the muzzle comes, then we will see.

It really is a 🤢-inducing habit! I hope the muzzle works. It seems to work well for my friend’s Lab but she also bellows at her Lab if she even looks like she might be going to do it. I’m so glad it’s not a problem I’ve had to deal with because, like you, it would really drive me bonkers. The collie rolling in 💩 and dead stuff drives me mad.

I can bellow but it has stopped Pen going down the paddock as she doesn’t like shouting.
