Hi ive not posted on here for ages but i just wondered what your thoughts were on puppies who arn't KC registered would you buy one or would you stay well clear?
Personally I would steer well clear. There are more and more unscruplious breeders out there and non KC registered breeding bitches can be exploited beyond belief.
I know they can have major hip problems so make sure both parents have been hip scored. Look on the KC website to see what other tests are recommended.
Always view puppies with a very open mind - you should be totally happy with breeders, mother, condition pups are raised in etc. If everything not 100% - walk away.
I'd give CaveCanem and MurphysMinder a PM if I were you (if they don't appear at some point!) They are the Godfathers of the GSD Mafia on here!
Having only had rescues, I'm not hot too on what being a KC registered means, but if I were to buy a puppy I'd be making sure the breeders had bred responsibly (i.e from excellent beasties) and had done all the relevant health tests (i.e hip/elbow scoring etc) for the breed prior to breeding.
Did someone call? Whilst KC registration is by no means a guarantee, unless things have changed recently you can only hip score KC reg dogs so it is more than likely if the parents aren't reg they aren't going to be hip scored either.
When looking for shepherds, the health tests you should be looking for are hip and elbow scores for both parents, haemophilia testing for the sire, and ideally DNA testing, but I do realise not everyone does this. Make sure you meet the bitch, and she is friendly, not nervous or aggressive and not too excitable. The breeders may not have the sire, but should be able to show you his pedigree, score sheets as above and some photos. If the dog is local ask if you could contact hsi owner and go and see him too. Pups should be friendly, in clean conditions and happy to interact with you.
Ask away if you want to know anything more.
What hip scores would be classed as good? ive heard the lower the better. what if one of the parents is kc registered but the other one isnt would you look at them? i have been offered a puppy from the Isle of Man i am from yorkshire they have said the pup is KC registered and emailed me a pic but they seem desperate to ship her over to me and wanted her to be delivered tomorrow ( i only enquired about her yesterday) everything is telling me to stay well clear, would you agree?
Yea thats what i thought, glad thats cleared up. we still need to do a bit more saving so we know for sure we an afford the pup plus injections and other bits and bobs we need without totally skinting ourselves i would say in a couple of months we will be ready to welcome a new addition to our already crazy household any recomendations of breeders would be greatly appreciated
Definitely steer well clear, sounds dodgy to say the least. Why are they so keen to get rid of the pup?
There are quite a lot of breeders in the Yorkshire area, I will try and think of some names, though CC will probably be quicker rattling them off with her "special" memory.
Re hip scores, yes the lower the better, ideally single figures, but certainly no more than low teens.
Im not sure why they want rid so quickly to be honest i was put off when they practically demanded my address so the pup could be sent to me by courier on monday morning i didnt reply back to them.
Good kennels in Yorkshire include Lindanvale (not sure if they are breeding these days) Kassieger, Meruke, Conadrew, Arjaybee among others. There are working kennels to, not sure of your level of experience but would not recommend working lines to a first time GSD owner - they can be intense
These kennels put priority on health tests, character and good traceable five-gen pedigrees as opposed to coat lengths, pretty colours, etc!
Don't be afraid to shoot me or MM a private message if you like the look of something and we can give you a steer one way or the other.
I don't breed or show, I have no agenda, I have no axe to grind and I won't speak for MM but she will tell you something similar!
Oh gosh no, stay well well clear of those...sounds like a random mating and trying to get rid of the puppies for a quick dollar to me!
Definitely go KC registered but just still be wary - our shepherd is KC registered as are her breeders, but she has problems upon problems including lifelong medication
PM me if you would like any names - I know of a few breeders (I could probably count on one hand! ) but they are good responsible breeders who throw good puppies with fantastic natures.
there's never any guarantee, but as long as homework is done you'll be fine
there are plenty of people on here willing to give you a helping hand in the right direction to reputable breeders!
Good luck and enjoy your new puppy when you get him/her
Thank you that is very helpful. i personally have no experience with GSDs but my partner has grown up with them, so im sure ill be on a huge learning curve when we eventually get one.
I will certainly go for KC reg pups now thank you for all your advise and i will look into those breeders CaveCanem, thanks alot
No worries, I am sure I will think of more, like I say, if you see anything you are interested in, we can give impartial advice and more hints and tips if you do go for a viewing in terms of what to look for (certificates, x-rays etc - don't accept 'oh, they're lost! etc!)
Do please try and stay away from certain breeders who breed solely for non-standard colours and coat lengths, the gene pools are so small in order to produce these, erm, qualities, that health can suffer in the long run and there can be higher incidences of hips dysplasia and epilepsy in such lines, however impressive these animals might look on the outside.
A bit further away but another good one is Jemness GSD in Sunderland. I am sure they, plus the breeders CC has mentioned would be happy to advise you even if they don't have any litters at the moment. Good luck with your search, as CC says just ask away if you want any more help.
As everyoner else has said ... run for the hills. Did they say why they used a non kc dog ? ... and anyone who offers to deliver without a really really good reason is worth giving a wide berth too .
