It's a hoof dressing. My new farrier has recommended using it on my horse's very dry feet - been using it for a week and already they look better.

You also need to take a look at what you are feeding... new farrier recommends seaweed, biotin (brewer's yeast is a good source I believe) and rosehips to improve the quality of the hoof grown.

Ah hah .. thanks folks . i have started feeding biotin plus but the boy is now playing with his food so i'm guessing it don't taste too good ( although i think it smells lush ) thanks poppymoo for the link i'll toddle off to my local Cornwall Farmers and see if they've got some - i think i may have got mixed up with richard bacon ( I wish ) ?

Fantastic stuff, I use it every day a reccommend by my brilliant farrier to help my horses feet from cracking etc. It is made out of animal fat so doesn't dry the hoofs out - just make sure you don't leave it lying around with the lid off - dogs love it.

I made this mistake and between them my dogs ate a whole tub last year!!
It's great stuff, although my farrier also recommended hosing hooves for a couple of mins as nothing puts more moisture in than water, thats why they don't crack in winter!

there is one in every pot! confused the hell out of me when i found he first one, after the 3rd pot i figured they were supposed to be there!
hint, in cold weather you can heat it up to melt it slightly to make it easier to apply with brush.

Ta lovey :p

Bay leaf? Hey I wondered what it was for, I thought it was a foreign body which had got into the pot when I left the lid off!! Perhaps I should have asked for a refund as my last pot had no bay leaf in, maybe it should have seasoning as well but not too much salt as it may come above the reccommend level!!

Thats the name of the bloody stuff I've been trying to remember for ages !!!! THANK YOU !!!

There are 2 types - the hunting mare I used to compete had the dark stuff in the winter (stinks and gets in you hair) its very hard so used to keep a pot in the footwell of my car so it would be warm when I got to the farm.

The lighter coloured stuff is more user friendly and she used it in the summer by summer I mean after April winter being before April ... I'm sure you get me - I don't know why they swapped over but she had nice feet and I tend to just do as I'm told when I'm given a free horse to ride in the summer !! The Owner is always right !!

How on earth do you get it in your hair? Unless of course you know something we don't and it's a new secret age defying face cream?:D

I love the Kevin Bacon stuff. When I worked at a racing yard all the racers had it put on every night and they had brilliant hooves. Used it on mine too but had to keep it at home in the winter so it was soft enough to apply.

I was confused about the bay leaf too!! Thought I had a dodgy batch!

Watch out for mice getting into it. I broke my lid and it took me a while to figure out why every time I used it there was a considerable amount of my Kevin Bacon missing!!!

this thread has really made me smile so thanks for cheering up my afternoon! :)

I agree with the other posts - I swear by this foot dressing - its the only one I will ever use and my farrier also said to wet the foot first and then add the KB as it will help get more moisture into the hoof......

Lol god knows !! I think it's more the smell when you warm it up than the actual stuff itself !!

.... if it was a new secret I wouldn't be blurting it out I'd be keeping it to myself ;-p

How the hell did you get it in your hair? If this is a new way of disguising the grey strands I keep finding on my head - then - hey I will smother myself in the stuff, bring it on?:( Nah seriously, the clear stuff is far nicer, the black 1 has stockholm tar in and absolutely stinks

I love kevin bacon hoof moisturiser, very good stuff, it soaks in really well and doesn't rub off on grass easily like other hoof products often do.

Another good thing to use on dry hooves is to buy a tub of stockholm tar and add a bit of cod liver oil into it to make it more of a applicable consistency and then paint it on, makes them smell really fresh too, so also good for frogs!

As for the water idea i read that someone mentioned, i would disagree because although the water wets the hoof, at this time of year they then dry really quickly and its the constant wetting and drying that will make the hooves crack. when you wet them, the hooves expand and as they dry they contract causing them to crack.
whereas, in the winter the grass and ground is permanently damp so the hooves just stay wet and soft rather than going wet then dry, wet then dry.... if you get me? hope i make some sense?

The black version contains stockholm tar so is a bit more antiseptic (so I'm told) and the greeny coloured one is just a hoof dressing.

It's brilliant stuff and since I've been using it my nails have never looked better!

I'm not sure about hosing the feet first though because if I put it on damp feet it leaves a horrible smeary mess rather than soaking in and looking nice & shiny. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong

No that does make sense and thinking about it that way, I can see you're right! It was just a tip my farrier gave me! I didn't think about it that technically! I will question him next time I see him!!

Fantastic stuff but watch out for your dog trying to eat it. Mine has stolen 2 hoof oil brushes and also tries to lick my horse's feet if given the opportunity!
