Noooo, I can't do alliteration any more, what's wrong with me? Oh well, I think it's over-used and over the hill, a bit like me. Either that or they removed it when something else was removed recently. :D

The Cheeky Boys and I enlisted the help of H, HGV driver and groom extraordinaire, for our Purston trip as I needed a helping hand. I'd done the entries ages ago before other things got in the way, so was damned if I was going to waste the entry (Yorkshire breeding does that to you).

Late start times are supposed to make things easier but nope, traffic made us late and then I turned up at dressage on Cal to be told I'd withdrawn. They slotted us in so he whose dressage isn't up to scratch at PN, never mind Novice, had a whole ten minutes to warm up - even TableDancer's schooling the day before hadn't turned him into Totilas. He did a curled up and dried up test, more or less doing everything but mincing a lot and generally being backward, except in the rein back which he was really forward in to get an 8.:p Thankfully in the rush H didn't bring the camera, so no evidence of that for you. Whew.:)

A quick course walk and I'd forgotten how well-built and well-presented Purston is, a bit of everything and enough to do, so I was itching to go xc. First though I had Jupiter to dressage, "dressage" being used in the loosest sense of the word.;) All was going ok-ish and I was riding a conservative test in the hope of keeping a lid on his personality, until the second canter that is. Yep, you can clearly see me ask for canter, then his surly "do I have to?" response followed by a buck, disunited canter, hysterical suggestions that I was about to beat him up, then his inability to get correct canter lead when we should be in medium canter and aaaaargh, need I go on? Little beggar. See what you think:

Oh well, I foresee some personality-squishing and dressage-drilling over the winter, as 36.5 for Cal and 38.5 for Jup ain't quite the competitive scores I'd like to be getting. To be fair, even with the wind in the right direction they'd have struggled to get better than that as Novice 111 is relentless, with no space for regrouping if something goes awry.

Then a looooong wait for our showjumping as we were the last section of the day. Ma Baydale's coffee cake helped bridge the gap and I was glad of the carb-fest by the time I got on Jup. Cal first though, keen as mustard and not always happy at his passenger's intervention. He was getting more and more woo hoo as the round went on and then "stopping up" when I suggesting whoa-ing, hence me firing him at the first double - that's my excuse anyway.:o Best bit was the last two, a forward 5 strides, uphill, oxer to upright: Lionel (trainer) would have been proud of me adding one to get a neat 6 as hooning to fences is no longer an option.;) I'll live with the time penalty I got and guess who that is shrieking in the background (horse, not human)?:p

Jupiter next and, while Thistle and B were being sucked in by Cal's big-eared cuteness, Jup and I were making some shapes in the now busy warm-up. By the end I managed to clear an area of 12ft around the fences and the helpers were taking two steps back as soon as they saw me lock onto one.:D Purston showjumps are very colourful, but check out what he does at number 3 , and how big does he jump at 4? It seemed only fair, in the spirit of "what goes around, comes around", that I take his back teeth out at 7 when he semi-launched at it, oops.:o However I got some Lionel Brownie points for again making the forward 5 a fairly neat 6 to finish. Yay for clear rounds, we love them.:D

I thought the cross country would be challenging for them, if only because it's 5 weeks since they ran at Richmond and they've not been schooling nor particularly over-worked in the interim. Hmmm, fresh 5yo's, what joy.;) Cal set off, focused and up for it, a bit spooky but jumping well....up until the water when, despite my balanced right-hand turn, gear change to bouncy canter and positive-yet-not-chasing approach, he only bloomin' tried to run out to the right, then pinged to a stop when he realised She wasn't going to let him! Bum bum bum. That'll teach me, as sneaky beaky Cal does much more subtle naughty stuff than in-yer-face Jup and I should have just been a tad more aggressive - ho hum, wishy washy me was caught snoozing, and if you snooze, you lose.;) I went the straight route again and he jumped into the deep bit, floundered about a bit - I thought my PointTwo was going to become a flotation aid - then we were back on track and he jumped everything else beautifully, little tinker.

Talking of little tinkers, He with the attention span of a goldfish had been transfixed on the baby alpacas (alpacalettes?) while he was stood waiting for me to finish on Cal, but at least that gave me a chance to get my battered body on him before the next round of Baydale v Jupiter. In actual fact it wasn't that bad, so I'm guessing endurance is my strength and not his, and if you hang in there long enough you eventually get some sense out of him.:p There were many attempts to start The Left/Right Game, very few straight strides but bless him, he pinged through the straight route at the water and even the trakehner followed by tyres/ditch/wooden thing (?) combo passed without incident. It would have been nice to have had four shoes beyond fence 3  but I'd hope there'll be other days with maybe a buck-free test and a fully functional rider when a rosette will be forthcoming.

Ma Baydale's coffee cake, Pa Baydale's leek and potato soup, or flowers - I have lots of those, but not edible ones ;), if you've made it this far.

They are not kind and trying to make life a little easier are they :D I think they are saving the ribbons up for the more wortwhile stuff later in their career ;) They both look quite scopey if they ever start concentrating on what they should be!

I think they were just letting you know they can't be doing with long gaps between parties :D. They're a smart pair of boys though and I'm sure they'll knuckle down to it sooner or later.
Bertie lost a shoe at Purston on Thursday (don't know which jump - R didn't say) and he also lost one at Gt Witchingham, so it's obviously the done thing these days. Where to next?

Hmm totally see what you meant on Thursday now! Guess they were happy to be at a party with you and in their enthusiasm kind of forgot they should have been on their best behaviour ......

Bet you weren't calling Jups cute, quirky or even queeky after that dressage test were you?! (Very pleased I'm doing the same test on my equally opinionated 6yo tomorrow now....). And I'm guessing the huge jump at number 4 was because the scary parrots in the filler were after his 'nether regions'?

Even with the 'personality' at the water I think I'll still take Cal rather than Jup please :p

Still, all things considered (and the fact that they've stepped up to PN+) I don't think that was a bad day at the office.

Well done Mrs! :)

ah you do make me giggle :D i remember looking at Cal's advert when he was for sale as a 4 year old and being VERY interested in buying him... he has turned out to be very nice - if a bit sneeky-cheeky ;)
hopefully they will both turn into nice sensible 6 year olds! :D

You are doing SUCH a good job with those very cheeky boys, particularly as i'm sure you aren't feeling quite like you are firing on full cylinders at the moment!!

I maybe slightly losing my enthusiasm for having a go on Jup....not sure i could manage that dressage or sit a couple of those show jumps! He's got some ping!!

They just like to keep me on my toes, that's all.:p And I'm hoping they're not going to peak too early in their careers with a 6th at PN being the best result.

Thanks T, they will be smart, eventually, and I didn't have the best prep for the event so they're not entirely to blame for making the most of an opportunity to be monkeys.;) To Keysoe, then Lt Downham, then Oasby, all subject to my oncologist telling me I don't need horrid drugs until mid-October.:(

Part of the problem is that negotiations are ongoing as to what "best behaviour" means...

They are both a credit to you (well that is when you are not trying to disown Jup). As I said to you, he is a rough diamond and is just a bit of a teenage larger lout atm, speaking as the mother of said teenager! Underneath all the bluster there is a mega talented eventer just waiting his time.

Cal is a real sweetie, I'm sure Jup leads him astry though.

I can vouch for the tasty coffe cake, it was yummy.

I think I saw a hint of the 'left-right' game before fence 3 SJ! I love Jupiter, although I do feel he needs more 'ballast' at the rear (not actually sure that's a dressage term) perhaps you good borrow a few weights from those tractor boys of Lincs?
Well done anyhows!

It felt ten times worse than it looked, as always. Know what you mean about the ballast, perhaps riding tandem would do the trick? ;)

Cal is a real grower, although I did wonder what I'd done when I got him home, as did several other people. Sensible? Hmmm, not sure that will ever happen with Jup. "Manageable" would be nice.

very impressive report, Superwoman. love it. those cheeky gits (sorry, they're too big to be boys) really don't make life any easier for you, do they? still, we'd all hate you to be bored up there...

Thank you. No they don't, and they do seem think they know best and I'm just there for the ride.....let the personality-squishing commence. :D ;)

I wasn't fully-equipped for them, admittedly, but at least I knew - more or less;) - what they may or may not do so it was worth going.

Funny how the number of willing volunteers for Jup is dwindling.

Thank you, I would have happily jumped off Jup in the sj warm-up, left him with his reins hanging and I bet you no-one would have rushed to steal him. :p Cal is much more user-friendly, even with the odd "are you awake up there?" moment.:D

Jup needs throttling. Re, the ballast, perhaps just tie a tractor weight to him and let him drag it around next time you go out, see if that takes the edge off him a bit.

(And re takers, what does it say about me he interests me MORE now . . . ;) )

Good on the sj - no doubt Lionel was proud! And it's nice to know all your hard one "experience" with the Lincolnshire (or was in Lancs - can't remember but both work here) Ditch Diver is standing you in good stead now you've got ones that actually care if the poles stay up.

Sounds like a pretty good day all 'round, especially considering your untraditional preparation regime. One day you'll look back on their youthful antics and laugh . . . :D

I think that the old 'they need bigger fences to make them concentrate' cliche is a tad overdone and rarely correct but it might just be true in this case. The only problem is that testing the theory can be a bit umm, 'interesting' and require brave and velcro pants (definitely both in Jup's case!). I wish they had PNP's up here :( we're crying out for one, though not if they're going to use Nov111 .

Tell those oncologists that your boys have a very busy schedule and they need to consult Jup's diary before they go booking you in for the nasty stuff :D

Can I have cake AND soup please? This Saturday has provided far less in the way of drama and bruises than last Saturday (thus far, at least.... ;)) but no more in the way of nutrition :(.

Crikey you must be as poor as me, I have just found £5.85 to buy a bag of cheap mix and cat food (for ferrets) from the local mill, now having Rice Krispies for lunch :-(
Being poor is pants!

I have never had a 'nice' 5yo yet - 5 def seems to be the teenager stage in horse terms. Fingers crossed for a pair of reformed characters next season.

Great day though considering the wider picture.

Fiona

I do love your boys - just ponies in over-grown bodies I think :D But yeah, I'll pass on Jup for the time being, got enough cheeky at the moment. Grrrr.

Good day all things considered though :D

The cheeky boys are certainly not going to allow Kick-Ass Kermit to have an easy time!

Totally agree with K 'Superwoman' is certainly a good alternative to KAS/BD:)

I am still a Jups fan, although the 'Jups' I am currently riding is a 14hh New Forest, who is also 5 and seems to enjoy the same attitude and personality as your Jups. Now I am proper pony squisking and as yet he hasnt managed to raise his back end with me, but I am sure there is plenty of time for me to be properly 'slam dunked' from a very low height:rolleyes:

Great report keep those lovely boys in line:)

Well done :)! Fab report and yay for clear rounds :D! Looks like they both coped very well with the step up, I'll join you for the dressage drilling over the winter though!
