Right, operation liven up C&T continues... so here's a little report of our outing today.

Kira's last show was insanely hot, a scorching trip to a venue we hadn't been before where the warm up was in a very dark small indoor which felt like riding on the floor of an electric oven cranked up to 'incinerate'. She didn't enjoy that a lot, so I had promised that we wouldn't have a day like that again... well at least we were outdoors today but we both still feel barbecued! :o she'll be putting in a complaint to the union.

last few weeks schooling have all been about throughness - lesson before last we identified a bit of a problem with this creeping in which was just making things more difficult than they should be. I feel like she's made great strides and is generally a lot more rideable....plus the trot has got easy to sit to again. but of course some of the other work has gone a bit rusty in the meantime. Realised I hadn't actually ridden any sideways for about 2 weeks yesterday ...oops  with a more established horse it wouldn't be an issue but Kira really does have the memory of a goldfish! :D

So rocked up to Allens Hill for the medium qualifier and AM92. Toooooo hot. too, too hot. :o Even with my new waistcoat, still too bleddy hot! As we arrived, an adder slithered across the drive in front of me, I love snakes so that was a treat, he must have been enjoying the sun ;)

Warmed up sweetly for M73, we were told the judge was running 10 mins late so I got on later than originally planned... only to discover they had caught up, so went into the test a little underprepared, could really have done with another 5 mins just to get a better reaction in the half passes but that's life, in different circumstances it wouldn't have mattered.

Up the centre line and flop to a halt, scrabble back into trot and off we went :o Typical first test from Kira, she just gets her little welsh brain in a tangle and then she goes behind my leg. But she delivered everything with just about enough enthusiasm for 63%, adequate, all things considered - I thought I was about to faint in the heat so just glad she kept putting one foot in front of the other.

Gasped our way back to the lorry park and gave her a slosh down. We had an hour between tests so I gave her a drink and put her back on the box - so nice to have a horse that will drink at a show, and stand nicely :) She promptly fell asleep, I tried to return to a normal temperature and remember the next test.

AM92 is the FEI junior team test, it's not the easiest to remember and it's REALLY busy, actually in terms of floorplan I prefer AM98 (was an option at a different venue this weekend) but I thought that would be pushing it with K at this stage (only her 2nd AM). Managed to get the test to stick in my mind and off we set for another warm up. Tried to keep it short and focussed so as not to use up all her petrol.. some changes, some pirouette canter to medium canter transitions, some canter-halt transitions and a bit of rein back.

Set off to the test arena like we really meant it - got a couple of neat changes before the bell went and set off up the centre line with determination! Predictably collapsed in a heap in the halt as she fell over her feet :o ONE DAY she'll crack that! the first half of the test felt really rideable and forward, if a little green - then we had a little communication error in the trot trans after the walk piris and it shook her confidence a bit so I had to work for the canter stuff  that said, 4 out of 4 clean changes  which I wasn't expecting after she went a bit backward, so super super chuffed. The right to left she is inclined to get ahead of me but she waited and let me determine the timing.

Felt like a legit effort at the level and more to come as we start to work through her confidence wobbles. 61% with a few little mistakes, happy with that from Lady Inchcape ;) , means she's now got her AF qualification in the bag and we will head to Beacons in mid August for that :cool3:

Next outing for her will be the Welsh Champs at Mount Ballan next weekend, we are tagging on another crack at the medium AF even though she's qualified already, quite frankly the more ring experience she gets the better! :D

sorry no ridden pics as I was on my tod as usual, but here's her best "gimme polos" face to lighten the post :D

Well I collapsed after 20 mins of lunging at around 2 this afternoon so I think your both flippin amazing for actually putting one hoof in front of another (twice!) and not just mugging the local ice-cream man.

I'm a big fan of the welshies and I really enjoying reading about how well you're both doing. Plus I'm admiring Kira's plaits & her 'forget polos, mum I really want that ice-cream' face

Great report, I love Kira :).
Happy to meet you at Beacons again to do photos if you want (providing it's after 19th August, uni have sent me to St Andrews for 2 months).

Fab report as always!

Topaz sympathises with the heat, but if it helps at all she was always dreadful for her first test, but four years in she's slowly getting more rideable from the off!

Does AM98 ride well this is looking like our only option to qualify for the AF's....

Thanks all :)

Lol I bet she'd love an ice cream:D she likes chips!

Lovely report - i love Kira more every time, she just sounds so awesome and the job you have done with her is incredible!

:o :o she is pretty cool :o

It was Millie's first post -injury test, easy to remember, changes on a serpentine then after half passes and after extended canter. Baptism of fire...but nice to ride. think it's the regionals test.

Fab report MP, I must start commenting more regularly!

Great report. ..

Thankfully it was much cooler in NI today, or the kids at PC camp would have cooked....

Fiona

I beg to differ! Both me and horse were horrible, sweaty messes this afternoon (Hillsborough area) and my hair is frankly disgusting after a "leisurely" run tonight in Aghalee. I definitely cooked!! Haha

Such a cutie face! And those big fat plaits are just yummy.

Impressed at you heading out in this heat. And doing so well. Great write up.

And good on you for trying single handedly to reinvigorate HHO, although I hadn't really noticed a drop in interesting threads but it's deffo a bit quiet around here generally.

Lol please join in.. if you ride Alf we definitely need a report ;)

Fat plaits are the only option, she has a double mane which is about a foot long :o

Hmm so could be entertaining if nothing else :o ...

I love Kira, and the plaits are great. Look like the ones I get on my mare. Which rather horrifies the proper horse folk on the yard! Thanks for your reports it's lovely to read of your progress and be inspired - especially as me and my mare are just learning how to wobble round prelim.
It was rather cold here today - needed a jacket! You should move north :-)

Fantastic report
What a clever lady, keeping going in the heat, and pretty tidy scores too! Is this her second AM outing?

Yes, 2nd straight test (she did 2 musics but got so frightened by the noise I've knocked them on the the head until I can desensitise her :o ) it's just the spaghetti noodles in her head holding her back, it's all there at home but she goes into herself if she gets worried.

Plotting a trip out before (elem) regionals to do a couple more AMs so she's a bit less green for her area festival.

Sounds great. I love watching the 'fancy' dressage levels, as I call them. I get a bit envious!

She really is turning into a little cracker!

She came to see Tinky last week but not til quite late, and in work clothes, so I wasn't able to make her clamber on board the elephant! I'm not giving up though! There will be a Bernster/Alf report!!

Foiled you

Yay, a Kira report!

I just love her, she's so cool. Even if she does have spaghetti noodles in her head :D

Sounds like you both did amazingly well in the heat, I'd have melted for sure.

Erghhhhh Bernster... anyone would think you didn't WANT to go round and round in pissage! :D Pull yourself together :D

she really does, it's faintly ridiculous that we're out at this level tbh when you look at her, being her noodley weird self, but I love her to bits anyway :p

It's flippin amazing that you're out at that level MP! I too have what I describe as a contemplater rather than a doer, and as capable and utterly fascinating to train as they may be, you do have to appreciate the journey, rather than the destination - and you seem so exemplary in that respect....Kira is very lucky to have you.

:o *blushes* how kind :o

It's definitely about the journey... I was lucky with Millie, she has that bit more quality and ease about her as a confident horse and was a red rosette machine, you get used to winning stuff :o
Kira is a different animal - she has plenty of her own red frillies but it's not a guarantee and when you get beyond elementary it all starts to become a bit more serious - I am acutely aware of the fact that she is really up against it when there is some real quality in the class... we won't ever be world beaters, but we CAN hopefully demonstrate good training and it absolutely makes my day when I receive a comment in the collectives to that effect, because I've done that myself - you can't buy that stuff.

She makes me ride better, no doubt about it and it's one of the things I love about her most. Leave no stone unturned. Keep control of yourself. etc. you know what I'm on about. "contemplater rather than a doer" sums it up perfectly, :p there is a natural talent but it's heavily constrained by her funny brain!

Yes, you're so right, they absolutely make you ride better...training is almost counter intuitive, in that with the majority of horses you get the base reaction and then training is about developing the conversation, whereas with a horse that naturally over thinks everything you ask you almost have to keep shutting the conversation down and try to get them to act on intuition and muscle memory. And you have to be very diligent not let that mindset in them slide for even one step.....tiring, but oh so rewarding, because when they get it they seem to get a real feel good factor from letting go
