just got quotes for horse insurance from petplan as nfu put up premiums by 50%. one horse has come back with an exclusion for any lameness - he had a suspected sprain around 3 years ago and came sound again after a week of rest and bute. this seems a bit unreasonable to me. other thing is my other horse has passed without exclusions and he has had a sprain and tendon injury in the past! now thinking it is not worth insuring with that exclusion - not much can happen to a horse that doesn't involve lameness! I may be able to get the exclusion lifted if i get something from the vet to say all is ok but that will cost and he vet is not due out for a few months. any thoughts? similar experiences?

That does seem slightly bizarre. Have you rung Petplan to discuss it? If you haven't give them a ring but don't mention your other horse, just in case they decide to exclude lameness for him too!

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that just having 3rd party public liability insurance is the way to go. They exclude everything these days. The money is going into an account instead now!

yes spoke to them over the phone but they didn't really have an explanation. i am also thinking i'd be better putting the money in an account. i am now struggling to think of when i would get a claim paid. horses are kept at home and just hacked out occasionally so they are low risk really.

the only thing left that is insured on taz body part wise is his back and he has had back problems but i dont want to investigate and find out its nothing to have it removed from his insurance, and even if i payed out for the investigation myself my vet still tells the insurance company so i might as well get them to pay for it its stupid! taz still has an exclution on his right hind for an abscess he had 8 years ago ad hasnt caused any problems since and he also has his tendons and lligaments excluded for no good reason other than he had puffy hocks from standing in, the vet was doing jabs so she had a look said nothing was wrong then i got a bloody exclution. i am with a new vet now and he thinks all the exclutions are unreasonable and has offered an insurance vetting which would then be sent to the insurance company so the exclutions would be removed

its rediculus!

yes it's awful when insurance is stopping you doing what you think is best for your horse. in the past when one of my horses was lame i would get the vet out as i want to do right by them but this then gives you exclusions even if they just got a wee sprain in the field. decided i am now going to put money aside for them - then i have more control.they are getting on now so at some point they won't be insurable so i am better to start saving for that now. i have bhs membership for public liabilty.

I have an ongoing claim with NFU re lameness which they have ben settling without problems. However, when the policey is up for renewal in october i fear the cost will be financially prohibitive, hence i am thinking about just having third part cover.I can anticipate NFU adding so many exclusions it's not worth having the policey as it stands.Thinking of putting the money into my ISA instead.I would love to hear peoples opinion on this.
