Just back from being on Holiday for a week. *Was in the lovely Branton, Northumberland. Such a beautiful place, such strange weather this week!

So I come back- get the dog out the kennels. And break all speed limits going down to the yard!
The boy comes *partially cantering* up to me - he does not see the point in speed:rolleyes: Loan behold.. he comes back to trot and comes up lame in his right fore, so slight that only a paranoid mummy would notice:rolleyes::p
So I tackle my way through baby highland, cobby and the field ornament to get him out- tie up.
Feet are quite warm- had my fingers crossed for it being the sunshine:D then what do I notice!? Some lovely ridged rings around the top of his hoof exterior- so I pick out the tootsies, and then tap his hoof with the pick handle.. and he moves away.

1 WEEK! He could not just cut the carbs and get working out and have beautiful muscly bum for when his mother came back... *sigh*

So he is in tonight- has had a baby sized handful of bran with garlic, a deep bed that will be trashed in the morning and 2 soaked nets.*JOY!*:D:D:o

Plan is that he shall be getting thrown out tomorrow morning for around 3 hours with his *crew!* And will be coming back into starved and if he comes up sound(fingers crossed) will be getting worked!

I have clotted cream fudge from Wooler on offer if anyone fancies giving me advice ! :p

Hoof pictures are what you may call an "epic fail" :p But the lines are there... or maybe I'm a paranoid mum..

And this is how much weight we can pile on in 1 week of no work!

The lines that are visible are more likely to be 6-8 weeks ago (i think!), so i wouldn't relate those to todays footiness. This will throw another ring in another few weeks.
At least you've caught it early. I think the weather has caught a lot of people out this year. Mad grass! I hope he's better soon :)
PS, i recommend magnesium oxide in his feed :)

You arent going to see ridges from trauma now, if he has only just got laminitis now!!
If you really believe he has laminitis keep him in on a deep bed of shavings and get the vet!! Soak and double/triple net some hay mixed with some straw1 But above all keep him of the grass until vet has confirmed laminitis or not!!

Hard to see clearly from the pic but the lines I can see are too far down the hoof to be from this week. I'd also play it safe & keep him off the grass for longer than a day. It is possible to treat yourself if you have a lot of experience with laminitics, but if you have any doubts give your vet a ring for advice & see what they say.

I'll agree on the mad grass argh! Being driven insane by it.
The founder rings were the same last year, appearing only a few days before he showed up at all footy- niave me last year put it down to stones and seasonal change. Then that slapped me in the face like a wet fish when I had a lame horse in the morning!
And thank you for the reccommendation!! -shall rush out to buy some :D:D

@fii and littlelegs

The vet and farrier are coming a week today- and I've had a decent amount of experience(sadly!) not just with mine(thankfully!) :p
So I'm just putting off till then, keeping the grass minimal as he cannot be in all day and the paddock is wrecked at the mo.
(edit) Had that feeling a couple of weeks ago that he was at risk of it so I kept him in for a a bit and it settled, no hot feet etc, but the blooming grass has got up again the week I was away so this could just have hit the nail on the head!

Well its your horse so up to you, but if it were mine and i thought it may be laminitis, i would be keeping it in, not putting back out , thats just asking for trouble in my book! :(

Personally I wouldn't risk any grass, wreaked or not if he does have lammi or think he might he needs box rest as he really shouldn't be moving around much.

Laterally the vet shall tell me as he did last year.
Keep him in with an hours turnout daily for the next 3 weeks, soak his hay and keep him on a deep bed with 1 bute a day and see how he fairs, if we see no improvement think about getting eggbars and keep him in permanently with soaked hay, 15 minute in hand walks on a smooth surface.

I'm not payed £70 odd quid to be told what I already know, if I see no improvement within the vet coming up I shall get her to check him out.:D

Vets said a hours turn out, really?I always got told the less movement the better as more damage is done else.

Thats what I got taught- but I went by the vet *being one I'd never encountred before*, the hours turnout is what I think caused him to be on full box rest for well over another 3 weeks. But I didn't challenge him... and this has just brought that back into mind. Thank you- I am re thinking.

If he gets it each year I would guess something isn't right within himself or his management!

He had it- October 2010 - so two years ago, drove me insane last year thinking about it. Laterally- I am being a drama queen. I'm just not wanting a lame horse again!

There is absolutely no way that lami would show up in rings like that already. We all know how little horn is grown in between trims/shoes. My own vet and farrier have both instructed yard-mates with lami in the past to adopt - box rest on deep bed - no turn out whatsoever.

You did ask for advice!! And thats what you are getting!
No point in asking really if you know better! :(

It was more of a rant- rather than an *Ask* as such. I was purely wanting some opinions, which are making me re-think.?
I was not being un-grateful on the advice, I was stating my opinion and adding additional information.
So thank you for your advice.:)

Hot feet & lameness aren't warning signs he might be due to get it in the future, unless its something else causing him to be unsound its a pretty obvious sign he has it. No vet I know would say put them back on the grass & fit eggbars if no improvement in 3 weeks. Egg bars afaik are primarily used for changes within the hoof, not to get rid of a laminitis attack.

I'm getting the feeling the *instinct* in 2010 was right. But I had never come across laminitis before then, have come across too much of it with others since then, will defiantly wait will Friday- to get our normal vet "that I and him trust!" Get her opinion, I'll keep him box rested as of tomorrow and minimally walked about till then. :)

Your not being a drama queen honestly I check my lad every day for any sign ( am a pro at taking his pulse now) |0|
he's been clear for 3 years now but did blood test him to make sure I wasn't fighting a losing battle! But he's ok himself so if he gets it again it's down to management so I'm very careful in everyway. The winter as much as summer.
Honestly I would keep your lad in and not risk it.

He was only lame in the right fore, and he did have half the field and a rock in it- right in at the frog. And it was only very slight in the trot- didn't think to trot him after picking the stone out though. Can't say I love my vets awfully either or that I find them competent at times, but the girl coming on Friday is a decent vet.

If you must turn out do it at night as the sugars are lower. But really I would be having him off grass completly a small concrete or similar pen would be better if he wont be box rested.

U say you had bute to give him? Make him a bit more comfy. I'm sure you did but if not I would call vet earlier than fri to get some. I had my lad on ACP as well to thin the blood and keep the blood supply healthy to the foot

His DP was faint, which has almost given me hope. But I think I'm clinging onto air here. It's the lines that were getting me- he is being chucked out a 6 tomorrow by the owner (too late too get her now!) but I shall head down a.s.a.p and grab him in - evil mum strikes again. Thank you!

Always have bute at the ready ;)
No ACP though- might put him on Magnesium Oxide as you said- I think it was you ;)- nope my memory does not serve me well, as itsonlyme said.
