Large rescue society refusing to hand over collie to breed rescue

Most rescues I looked into wanted a 6’ fence all the way round the garden. That might be OK and normal in a small city garden, but we have 1/2 acre of country garden backing onto our own land. It has 4’ post and rail with chicken netting stapled to it. It’s dog proof, but not high enough.

Rehoming assessment fail.

Same here, I gave up the last attempt to take on a rescue and bought a pup, once I move I will start looking, probably for two as currently without a dog but the fence will not be high enough to even bother applying so 2 rescues will lose out on a lovely country home with someone there most of the time, no way am I putting up a 6 ft fence.

Of course they won't hand him over....the rescue threatened to sue them.
Goodbye any future working relationship as well.
How else were they meant to stop Benji being PTS? The Mayhew refused to listen to them - and they actually know the dog, they knew the owner, and could have found him an experienced collie home.

Also, it seems that the owner wished him to be rehomed by the Mayhew (post 16). If I had made a decision for my pet like that before I died I'd be a bit peeved from my grave if that was not what had happened.

Ricardo Ministro, Canine Behaviourist:

"Rescued Dogs when staying at the kennels waiting for adoption are many times highly stressed, highly aroused and highly sensitive to the environment.

These factors will affect their behaviour negatively and will trigger reactions that would not be seen otherwise.

Making final conclusions about any dog in these circumstances is wrong.

It is also wrong to think that what is seen in terms of behaviour is the dog's personality and that it will not change over time.

Besides that, what is done with them during this period is very important.

It is very important because it can set them to a better place, or to a worst place in terms of behaviour."
