My mare always has windgalls on both her hind legs and always has done, they dont usually change with work or turnout or rest - they are just there.

Until today when I've brought her in from the field to take her for her lesson and one of them is rather large, I've checked all her foot, heel, tendon etc and there are no small nicks or cuts, its def just fluid in that area, is isnt hot, perhaps a tiny bit warmer than in her other leg but nothing significant. She walked and trotted up fine so I took her to the arena and told my instructor who said we'd see how she goes.

She was not at all lame, but kept stumbling a bit on her other hind leg (its not uncommon for her to stumble as her back end is slightly weaker and we are working on building this up) but she did quite a few stumbles so we decided to leave it, this was only in trot.

What can anyone recommend for making the swelling reduce? She's happy for it to be pressed etc she's in no pain. But its a bit odd esp only on one leg, any advice greatly appreciated.

Oh she is a 17hh TB x ID x Clydesdale mare with a typical heavy horse action in her back end. All power at the front and is turned out at grass 24/7.

Thanks again sorry its long x

my mare had a windgall come up in back leg not lame but needed to get her fit for a holiday in the south downs so called a vet she ordered a scan unfortunately it turned out to be a tear in the ddft don't take any chances she also had tiny amount of heat in it the injury didn't show up enough signs to warrant how bad the injury was another thing was (I never lunged) when vet lunged her she was 2/10th lame on one rein and failed the flexon test before the scan good luck hope it's better news than mine xx

I am not saying it is BUT It might not be a windgall. It could be annular ligament. My lad had this and several experienced people said it was a windgall.

Was never even slightly lame, only a tiny amount of heat.

I had vet, who scanned it. As I say it was annular ligament. luckily I caught it before it made him lame

Was just about to say the say thing. Vet says Cobby types are predisposed to annular lig injuries

My mare had a similar thing, was advised to give her 6 weeks off before it caused any more damage. She wasn't lame but it was clearly sore, have you been ridin your horse a lot on the hard ground? Vet said he has been out to loads of people recently that have just overdone it a bit on the hard ground x

My boy (cob x) is also currently suffering with this!

He had 6 months off last year due to annular ligament problems. He had been back in full work for several months but I think I just over did it a little with the hard ground and he went a little lame.

I had mine scanned as I was really worried about it though there was no signs of major damage so I was told to box rest him for a couple weeks whilst doing cold compresses as much as possible. They've definately helped. I've also now put him on Equine America Glucosamine + MSM as reccomended by my farrier.

Thanks all, think you may be onto something re the ligaments, got her in on box rest and vet will see her tomorrow, its bigger than it was though she is still sound on it.

I'd like to be able to say we had done hard work and thats maybe what caused it but due to having one of the others on box rest and trips back and forward to my vets and liverpool etc she's been a bit neglected in the riding regime!

Will see what the vet says tomorrow - theyre booked for my other horse anyway so may as well look at her too.
